I've just finished the first trilogy by Ian Douglas and am about to start on the second one.

The first one was a very pleasant read I must say. It's set in the "near future" with the discovery of alien artifacts on Mars and the second trilogy is a sequel set around 100 or so years past the first.

First Trilogy - Heritage Trilogy

Second Series - Legacy Trilogy

It's not quite as "hard" as David Drake is but the first is definitely an enjoyable read. If any of you are looking for some decent military sci-fi I'd say it's definitely worth checking out.

I thought it was a very interesting take on the effects of time dilation (military and social) and that the ending was great (I wont spoil it).

Yes.

There's a quasi-sequel...

The funny thing is that there isn't that much combat in it...

I enjoyed the read though, but's it's nothing like a Hammer's Slammers or Starship Troopers... very different kind of bird.

Drake came out of Vietnam with some positive memories of his comrades at arms... I get the distinct impression that Haldeman did not.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Guys,

If you haven't given John Ringo's Human / Posleen novels a try, I recommend them for a fun little romp.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

BTW ... Maksim, Tom & Doug ...Hammer's Slammers VOL.1 should be out today (!?!) and in my hands within a few weeks ! ?Hopefully ! ?I'll keep you all informed ! ?And M/S, I'll order you a copy of Treadway's, H/S handbook/rules and both of us a copy of pt.2 - "Hammer's Anvil" in Apr-May (?), as soon as it's released !  LMK if that is good for you !                      And being a big Slammer's fan (note Avatar!), I'm hoping GZG will release 6mm Slammers this year !  And after being assigned to 4 Inf Bns (1 Air Aslt, 3 Mech) and attached to a Tank Bn or 2, I really can understand/get Drake's writings ... all of it sounds very familiar. ?:D   Too familiar !   He knows Soldiers !    :)

"Hammer's Slammers" is a collection of stories by David Drake.  They were released as sets of short stories, and all of the books have a military 'ring' to the title.  (Counting the Cost, Paying the Piper, The Tanklords, The Sharp End)

All the short stories are based on Drakes' experiences in the 11th Armored Cav (the Blackhorse).  Some of his later stories (from Paying the Piper) are taken from odd nooks and crannies of military history, but there always is a fairly legitimate reason for there to be fighting on whatever world the Regiment finds themselves on.  One common complaint is that Drake's characters seem to be a little 'flat', although most military types (in the field, at least) are rather flat and almost 'cookie-cutter', in my experience.

Yes, you can get a compedium of all of Drake's Slammer stories - "Hammer's Slammers VOL. 1", it should be out any day now. ?You can get in at BUY.Com, Overstock.Com, Barnes&Noble, etc. ?The top two have the best price ... I pre-ordered 4 copies for Maksim, Tom, Doug & I ... ?You can also get the individual books on Amazon. ?Treadaway did a great job on the Handbook/rules based on all of Drake's Slammer books. ?Pt.1 is out and pt.2 will be out in Spring. ?Old Crow makes great 15 & 25mm Slammer AFVs and GZG does the Infantry. ? Jon from GZG "promised" 6mm Slammers too ! ?I'm hoping to add those to my inventory ! ?There is also a great modeling/gaming site too. ?Anyone who wants any of these sites e-mail me at Rok31@webtv.net ?... BTW ... I've never been called a "cookie cutter", LoTS ! ? ? ? ? ?I liked his characters, the Major is one bad Mutha ! ? ?I think the books appeal to me because of my past ... as I said, it all seems familiar and "real" ... ?I recommend Treadaway's book - it's a good synopsis and overview. ?And get VOL.1 too ... I can send you a piece Jon of GZG did '95, it's a good overview also ... ?And BTW ... a Slammers TF would hand any Epic army it's "butt" !!!! ? :;):

The Forever War is an amazing book in my opinion, very different from much of your run of the mill scifi around these days.

At the moment I'm reading Battlefield Earth by L. Ron Hubbard which isn't exactly military SF (or great literature!), but is a great adventure story, nice and easy to read, with plenty of action. I'm enjoying it so far- give it a go if you have the time (its over 1000pgs)!

Anyone else read it?

Cheers, ~Gabe
