It looks as if GW have someone already onto the job of finding people illegally selling GW produce on ebay and such places.
This was on their Specialists games forum blog last week.
Thanks to some vigilant members of the Specialist Games community it has been bought to my attention that an unscrupulous few are trying to take advantage of our free content and the goodwill of our customers. Recently some eBay sales have been taking place that are re-selling Online Rulebook and article PDFs that are freely available on this site. One particularly cheeky individual doesn?t even provide the PDFs but simply supplies the direct links to our site!
Needless to say this is highly illegal and not only tries to take advantage of hobbyists but also puts the availability of free PDF content on this site in jeopardy. If you see such scams anywhere on the internet please don?t hesitate to let me know so we can close them down and prevent honest hobbyists from being conned.
If you are one of the few who are operating these scams be aware that we have full time copyright infringement agents who scour such auction sites and will not only close your sales down but will follow up with legal action.
For now, Andy @ Fanatic |

dptdexys,
wow - now that's just cold.
Who are they targetting on ebay... the guy that has access to the internet and a computer, but no printer or ability to access SG website when they game?
Kudos to GW for nabbing the bad guys. However, there's a hint of a Natural Selection joke somewhere here.

Oh definately I agree with them protecting their rights. I'm just being cheeky. Though I am unsure about illegal profit in this case. The only thing he was doing was selling them before the street date, which while not neccessarily illegal, could cause all sorts of other problems. It's the same for music and movies. I could sell them to you a few days before, when I receive them, but you'd be fined by the distributor and would likely never be allowed to carry that distributors stuff again.
I do have the pages saved that the had up on the site as they detailed Markerlight rules and the Sniper Drone squads.
As for the guy selling PDF copies, I do the same thing sort of. I have access to printers and plotters at work. So I print stuff out for those that want them, for a price. There's little to no profit as I do have to pay for the prints at work, but I usually trade for them. A blister or two depending on the size of what I've printed out. But that's different than selling them on eBay for a profit.

They allow you to use them for personal use only, printing them off for other people is not personal use and GW would view that as copyright infringement.
Having said that, how would they know?

Guys,
I think there is some confuxion here.
The auction linked to originally (I believe) was to pre-release copies of the 40K Tau Empire codex however he was not shipping until the official release date. GW are VERY clear with the LGS that they supply. They send out new releases early so that they can all start selling on the same day on the condition that the LGS only start selling them on the release day. Same goes for copies that they give out to individuals as prizes / gifts / etc.
This guy was selling *multiple* copies which suggests that he gained them through a store or owned one himself and therefore was trying to tsay on the right side of GW but that didn't happen. I'd suggest the scans of the pages he put up were the problem.
The quote from SG is a different circumstance. It's not a saleable producst but GW retain ownership and only they have the right to sell (or give away) the free articles and rulebooks from the SG website. If some one has access to ebay to buy them the can conceivably find them on the SG website as well although they may not be aware of them.
As it is, the community on Coolminiornot is up in arms because someone downloaded all the hobby articles there and slapped them into a PDF before selling them on ebay. He's sold several hundred copies at $4 a go already for a few hours work with acrobat. His justification was that 'there was no copyright notice' and that he spent time editing the articles into a book format. 'Editing' also included removing all the names of the authors by the way..
If I'd had enough forethought when I was young I would have tried to get into law and specialized in Copyright and IP - it's where the money is nowadays..

no, i talked to him in email. he was selling proffesionally made 'photocopied' codices.
appearently he got ahold of a 'store copy' and made photocopies and was selling them on ebay.
that was the reason he wanted you to email him before you bidded.
cheers,

Having said that, how would they know? | True enough, but sionce it's not really an advertised thing, and there's no profit, I'm essentially printing out copies for friends. If they want to send me a cease and desist they can go right ahead.
