WARGAMING: The Shield Gaming Conference & Starfleet Battles With Vince!

Hi Guys,

My blog has just been updated:

http://6mm-minis.blogspot.com/

Check it out for some cool links to my friend Vince's site as well as The Shield Gaming Conference.

I especially included a link for Tas and Vanvlak to the VSF / Colonial section of Vince's site. Enjoy, guys!

The apartment move is really coming along... most of my belongings are packed and the old aprtment is slowing being moved (scrubbing every surface, filling in holes with putty, repainting any off spots, etc.) although unpacking is nearly as daunting a task as the packing and shlepping itself! Ugh!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I really liked his Aeronef vs Tripods game

Glad to hear the flat is working out. I still have unpacked boxes from 5 years ago before I went to England!

And if you happen to come accross those Squiggoths or Ork Dreadies.....   :p   :D

Yes, Vince or Vinnie is my mate. He's a great guy and I've probably played in about 70 to 80% of the games reported on his site, especially the ones in the last few years.

The Zombie Town Massacre games are classics... a lot of fun!

I love a gaming group with twisted humour!

Check out the Hill Fort game from the VSF section. I played the British in that game supported by Colonial Japanese (yes!) played by another friend named Mike. One of the Martian players had a mental break-down during that game. It was really weird, but other than the temper tantrum, it was a very fun game. I think that was the last VSF game we played.

Unfortunately, I found a few boxes in the closet that were from when I moved into the old apartment five or so years ago... they were mostly university papers that I should have tossed all those same years ago... plenty of notes that I'll never use again... I either learned the material or I didn't!

I've tossed most of those older materials.

So... I admit it too!

I've already found the Ork blisters you desire and would be happy to send them to you soon... may I have a week or two?

Shalom,

Take all the time you need Sir - you are a Gentleman and a scholar! :p

And I do envy you all those fun games.  I agree that a fun gaming group is essential! :)

Yes, with just 3rdI and me... and all our family/work issues, etc. ... we have no time for gaming... ???

However in the past we and a few other Boyz were "Epic'ing" weekly in my "WAR Room!" But it appears Peace has broken out in our Epic Universe... ???

Hi Guys,

Sorry for those of you who have E-mailed me and not received back a speedy response. My new apartment still does not have an active phone line or Internet access so unless I'm by the old place, I'm cut off from the world. This week the lines should be activated so hopefully we'll see it happen then.

This was a good weekend.

One Friday night, my friends Vince, Joel and I drove down to Lodi for a Starfleet Battles game and had a great time. We went out to pizza and socialized to no end. The game was quick and we shot the bull after that. We had a fairly simple two-on-two with two Lyran cruisers versus two ISC cruisers. The optimal tactic for Lyrans would have been to stay at distance and plink away at the ISC, but we didn't want a long boring game so we, the Lyrans (Jeff and I), charged in and the ensueing melee was pretty even with both sides having torn up ships before we decided to call the game a draw and move on. It was a good night.

Saturday was the date of The Shield Gaming Conference and my friend Dick stopped by to pick me up around 10:00am and we made our was down to The Shield and got gaming. ?

We first played in a pirates game using the ruleset from the guys in Chico. Dick played zombies on a few canoes and I played the spanish galleon trying to escape with the uber treasure. And then there were the numerous pirates skiffs... about eight of them... bad news for me!

The Spanish galleon did escape, but with heavy damage and most of the crew killed. Dick's island zombieswere hell on the pirates. His shaman kept on turning pirate crew members into zombies, which spread havoc amongst a goodly part of the pirates... who in turn turned on each other like good back-hearted pirates do.

Only two or three or the pirate vessels chased the Spanish galleon (my vessel), but they rolled well and I was trying to break the record for rolling 1s and 2s on a D10!

It was a fun game!

Later that evening, Dick and I played in the DBA torunament, which was fun. We had eight players and played a heat of four rounds. At the end of four rounds, I got a big surprise... I WON! Go figure!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

P.S.
And, of course, I bought a few goodies at the trade area...

You're always welcome, John. If I can do anything for a righteous chap like you, I'd gladly do it.

I really like the Tau structure you sent me... and it also gives me fond memories of shooting... looks just like the clay birds I used to swat out of the sky in another time...

And I had no idea that I might do so well with DBA... I brought an Indian army that was heavy in cavalry and bow and despite the plethora of pike facing me, still managed to crush the opposition... I killed half the enemy generals I faced!

Elephants rock!

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Congrats on the DBA Maksim - Elephants do rock (my Romans HATE them!) and I see by your consistent targeting of Enemy Generals you are a student of Command and Control Warfare! :D

The first army I took out was a Roman one.

I'm starting to think that a Pike & Psiloi army is the way to go.

I tend to make very simple battle plans when playing DBA and HOTT... generally one big line that moves forward at speed and crashes into the enemy. I don't bother with maneauver unless my line is disrupted and then I tend to reform a line and crash forward again... either that, or simply aggressively push the fight on the enemy.

I wish I could say that targetting enemy generals was my clever plan, but...

I think I was out-maneauvered and out-strategized almost every match, but...

I wasn't out-fought!

Sometimes, that's enough... :;):

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Interesting to hear about the DBA Maksim - congrats on your win!. A great ruleset, I play its big brother DBM, and sister game HOTT.

I don't know about pike in DBA - in my experience the frontage tends to be too narrow (cos you have to double up your elements). As a result you get nasty flank attacks happening. Still if you can break throught he enemy line before that happens it can work.

*** What did your DBA Indian army consist of? ***

I use Indians in DBM... 10 elephants (including 4 generals), 16 bow, 15 swordsmen (blade), 6 horde, 14 psiloi... small (for DBM) but deadly! :)

Hi Markco,

I have more than a few pals in your neck of the woods... :;):

You get to know a lot of folks being the 6mm guru!

I'm not overly fond of DBM, but I like DBA and HOTT a lot!

We're getting ready to embark on a HOTT campaign.

Pike tends to need some kind of cavalry to ride flank guard in my experience.

We were allowed two different variations of one list:

#1.
x1 Elephant general
x2 Elephants
x2 Chariots
x2 Cavalry
x5 Bow

#2.
x1 Elephant general
x2 Elephants
x2 Cavalry
x6 Bow
x1 Blade

I may be off a unit or two, but that's it or close to it off the top of my head.
