I have just been over at Portent looking at their forums, and they have just recently passed the one million (1,000,000) post mark!!! Amazing!!!

Plus, while i was looking they had over 100 active users in the forums at that time! Mad!

I hope this forum becomes immense someday...

Cheers

Chris

That someday is once Epic Armageddon is released. Hopefully it'll catch on.

I hope you are right. I belong to a few boards and they seem to be getting less active. My friend and I are dubious about EA. It plays well. But, I am concerned about the ever shrinking army factor. I guess the armies keep getting smaller because of the constant price hikes and low marketabillity. I do hope it will chatch on.

Hi!

I am concerned about the same thing signius. Since the release on Epic 40k and the "free form" army list selection, detachments and games have less and less actual miniatures on the table.

In SM, fielding a IG tactical company was a sight to behold. Thirty-two stands and a command rhino and that was one measly part of your whole army!

While more open army list selection makes it easier to collect and feel a usable force, IMO, it makes it look less "epic" due to smaller unit size.

As for Epic A's success, as I have said before, will have to do more with marketing than the rules. The rules are good, the way they seem to want to market it isn't.

I agree, their marketing stragety (or lack of) has always left something to be desired. I have read alot of articles and things around the web. At times I have actually questioned wheather or not they even care. I realize that we are a small minority in the 40k world and a miniscule minority in the gaming community overall. I also know that production is both a troublesome and costly venture. But, it would serve them well to listen to their cutomers. I guess they have a plan and are sticking to it. Sink or swim. But, I have been reading alot of complaints about EA. Some noteworthy, some not. I just wonder waht the use of playtesting is if there are calls that fall on deaf ears. Don't get me wrong, I am looking forward to the game and the new models.(kind of) It is just that the 'E' doesn't seem to stand for epic anymore. I don't know. I just have a bad feeling about this one.

careful what you say, i belong to various forums concerning wargames, one forum happened to have a flame war concerning GWs marketing and prices, and was threatened with legal action. not gossip but fact.

certain members of GW took umbrage to people complaining about their strategy and price hikes, and threatened legal action against people and the forum concerned.

i for one resigned from the board over this as did others,if anyone wants further discussion over this i believe it should be off-board by e-mail.

Hi!

Your not the only one with a bad feeling on this one. Once I learned what the plans for Epic A were (Tom, our webmaster has direct conversations with Jervis, so I have been able to find out pretty much everything I need to know on how they are planning to "pitch" epic) I pretty much knew the game had a large hurdle to overcome.

You are correct about the mixture of concerns, some are pretty valid and have yet to be answered fully. I lurk on the Epic A forums too and I have seen quite a few polite, but very well constructed posts bring these concerns forth. At least for me, Jervis's responses don't do much to reduce these concerns.

As for the playtesting, well, Jervis has his design philosophy, which I dont agree with, but he's the designer, so he can use what he wants. He may be "open" to feedback, but since the whole project began from a point and form of his choosing, the real issues on why people left the game were not cleared up prior to start designing the game. IMO a fatal mistake since I beleive they are STILL not listening to their customer base in this regard. A game designed from scratch guided by actual research on what epic players want to see in a game (via polls or forum discussions) would have gone a long way in easing anxieties.

Epic gamers, as you state, are a minority in the world of GW players. Therefore the willingness to allocate resources and give epic a really big push is not there. But they do not realize this is a vicious cycle. If they do not invest big in the game to make it big, how can they expect it to succeed?

Its a basic tenant of business that to make money, you must invest money. Dont expect a big return for little effort.

Hi!

Simonhaines, thats outrageous!

GW has a bad habit of trying to bully people into submission. Unless the said forums were "theirs" in which they can pretty much moderate as they please, they can't do much. At least in the US, its protected under "freedom of speech", so they can go to forums they dont own and threaten people this way, they dont have a legal basis for this (again at lest in the US).

Its sad that they feel they need to "slam" peoples negative opinions about them, instead of addressing them.

Thats the main reason I hadly ever use thier forums, if I cannot speak my mind, whats the point of posting?

So do not feel you do not have a right to discuss this on this forum, its free speech and GW can regulate that, regardless or their threats.

Well, I live in California and they can't sue me for speaking my mind. Maybe this is the wrong place to unload my concerns.

Hi!

Jimbo, pointed out the very important fact that these boards are UK based. So I think it is prudent to keep such discussions of the board since we wouldn't what the board to suffer any problems. I for one will never mention my opinions in this regard on a UK based forum ever again.

If you like to comment more on this the best place is the net epic list, its a Yahoo board and they are based in California US.

Back to your regularly scheduled program.

I wish they'd just start releasing the new models, instead of dragging us along like reluctant puppies out for a walk in the rain.  :o

Just to address a couple of points. I would like people to feel that they are able to say what they like on these boards. If people dont feel that they can speak their mind, even in criticism of GW, then why not simply join an official GW board? These boards are not run by GW. We are the players and we care about the game. Our opinions count, if I didnt believe that then I would not set this up.

I dont want confrontation with GW, and I dont believe that it is enevitable. We are allowed to think. Personally, I feel that Epic40K was/is a wonderful game, poorly marketted. That is not particularly contravertial!

If I or a mod feels that the opinions border on slanderous or unfounded public demonstrating against GW, or will result in negative sales, we will step in and close or bring it to order. That is our job. There is minimum censorship on these boards for that reason, even regarding colourful language (that is not an invitation to try it out!   )

As for Portent, I saw their millionth post. It would be great to grow to that size, but I dont know if there are enough Epic and Gothic players around! Still, almost overnight, these boards became at least the second biggest web forum for Epic, behind the official Epic:A ones. That is a great achievement in a short time.

I think that the future of this place is very bright. When Epic:A hits properly, there will be a lot of interest. I hope that these boards will be in a position to benefit from that. One million posts is in the future, but I just dont know when...

CyberShadow the voice of reason :;): but seriously.. good post...
>>We are the players and we care about the game. Our opinions count, if I didnt believe that then I would not set this up.
- I can't agree more :) .
I mean, even though the board is based in the UK, can they really sue people for complaining about prices.. its not like its a unique phenomenon to GW..

On your other points, I reckon that while it may take a while  to reach the millionth post on these boards, I'm sure that we will see an increase with the re-release of BFG in the UK, and Epic Armageddon in the Uk at the end of the year.... ?:)

I tried out the censorship with one of my first posts I think.

Also i found out that Hellhound, if accidentally seperated, doesn't come out, ie.  #### hound.  :p

Typical, you cant say hell, but you can say other, far worse! If you understand this, the changes have worked.
