Long, long time ago in the bad old times there was, for a while, available a range of dinosaur robots called "Zoids". I really liked them, as the larger ones had really clever movement mechanisms, even though I was a bit old to be playing with such toys.
After that I have found out that there was (is?) a comic book series about them and some animation series as well.
Does anybody know more about the background & stuff? I've trawled through scores of (very) badly translated japanese WWW pages without much success.
Is the animated series available as DVD somewhere? Or the comic books?

Zoids! I remember them! ?- a friend of mine had buckets of them... I had just a few. ?
Searching the web I can't find a damn thing either... I know the good guys had gold pilots while the bad guys had silver pilots... that doesn't help much i know...
(Edit) Ok did you find this page:
http://zoidsfan.jerrystoys.com/index.htm
Background story (WARNING: this background truly sucksl):
"Ever wonder what the back of your Japanese Zoids box says?
Here's a translation: The time is when the humans on the Earth, accomplished in their progress of the solar system, and aiming at the fixed star flight.... On the directly opposite side of the solar system, "Zoid zone", identical with the solar system was discovered. The planet "Zoid" possesses a similar atmosphere with the Earth and it is a planet in which a lot of metal vein exposures are found. For this reason the life born in the ocean with high metal ion density have gone through various stages of evolution, and became Reptile kind, Insect kind living creatures that possess metal cell structure. This is how the metal existence "Zoid" appeared. Simultaneously, in the process of evolution, some were separated, developed on their way, and eventually became the intelligent kind, "Zoid Planetary Men". Later, "Zoid Planetary Men" were divided into the Republic side and the Imperial side and both struggled for power. Both camps started reconstructing the main weapon, "Zoid", to the combative creatures. "Zoid" further improved in the hands of currently arrived human beings, their fighting capacity got strengthened and became a remarkable creature, "Mechanic made Zoid". "
There's a bit about the comics and stuff there too.

I loved Zoids, had loads and even when I got rid of most of them I kept the weaponry as some of it is useful for conversions. I still have a huge Bronotsaurus that my brother brought back from Japan, waiting to be assembled. I even have some of the comics, locked away in a dusty attic. Ahhhh, good old memories.
I cant remember much of the background, though. I think that it suffered from various revisions as lines were added - for example they went through a 'red' phase.
You could try the official home page:

This is quite good , too:

I can't tell you how many lawns I mowed to collect those things. The Zoids later got marketed under Robo Strux or something like that. I had probably 30 of the wind ups and a bunch of the powered ones: Brontosaurus, T-Rex, Triceratops, Stegasaurus, Pteradon, and one other wheeled one that made no sense but it was so fast I loved it anyway.
I was stupid enough to give them away to my friend's boys that proceeded to lose almost all the pieces and never even played with them. I was so annoyed.

There are two different series if the zoids anime that I've seen, both are cool, but the one with the republic and rebel is the better of the two storywise, and Raven kicks butt. For a while Sky was showing them at 8 before I went to work.. Zoids the toys were re released about 2 years ago by hasbro, but I've yet to find any of my favourite ones in a store.

I remember Zoids as well. Never had enough money for the larger ones though
But I did get the comic for a while. It started off with a human ship crash landing on a desert planet where these two forces were fighting each other.
I might just have to dig out the few comics that I still have hidden away. Happy memories.
