hi all,
of all the games produced in recent years by GW, the only two I had never purchased were Bommas over da Sulfur River and Blood Bowl. The former is available as a download, so that's ok. the former has online rules, and i also have 4 teams purchased when a local store extended the legendary 50% off Epic models sale to ALL GW products (40K Pretorians.... 2 boxloads!).
Anyway, I have never been really attracted to American football type sports (preferring rugby, which I still don't follow!) - but several reports indicate it being a fun game. Anyone care to comment?
cheers,
John
PS - I have Dark Elf, Chaos Dwarf, Norse (yay) and human teams (the 'middle' set, with yellow and dark green gear on the box).

The best board game using models ever.

Hours of endless fun.

We have played 2 separate Blood Bowl Leagues at my local gaming club. All but 2 club members love the game. We have found that lagues work best if shorter more focussed. Players tended to lose interest if the league dragged on too long- same is true of most campaigns for any gaming system- finish the league/campaign before everyone is bored and tha chances are you will want to do another one after a few months gap.

One comment I had about Bloodbowl is that it seems as prone to many games for stat/ability inflation. Some of the newer teams such as Norse and Amazons have significant advantages compared to the older teams such as basic humans but without significant disadvantages.

The great thing about Blood Bowl is that it is cheap games to get into (you only need to purchase 1 box set & couple of blisters for full strength team and having 1-2 different teams is enough for most people), simple to paint (you don't have huge number of figures), quick to learn and long while to master the tactical intricacies.

I would recomend it to anyone, especially if playing League at local gaming club.

Cheers

James

I can't recommend Blood Bowl enough. Blood Bowl is a really good game. You don't need to know anything about American football to enjoy it. It's one of those games that adults and children can enjoy. Having an Ork team is almost mandatory! :p  :D

As WI mentioned, it's a relatively cheap game to get into. New players only really need initially to buy their own teams. Of course, I have no idea if you'll be able to find opponents in Malta, but I'm guessing that it would be easier than finding epic opponents.

I dissagree with the stat inflation. Humans I believe regularly win tourneys and league. Norse are actually reguarded as a second tier team.

Hi!

Good all around deal.

You need the basic rules and two teams. Quite a small investment compared to GW's other games.

Simple rules, lots of character and very good replay value.

Solid game.

I will add my voice here. I have had half an eye on BB since first edition, and have followed it ever since. I have half an Orc team waiting in the wings. I think that the game is extremely balanced for starting teams. I do think that a knowledge of American football is a plus (which I dont have) but certainly not essential. I like it as a 'pick up and play' game, but have never got around to a league. A really cool little game.

I'd also add that it can't be a completely horrible game, it's lived about as long as NetEpic.

The models are fairly simple to paint, you don't need many, etc, etc.  I just never got into it, for some reason.  Probably because I don't like football/soccer/rugby, now that I think about it.

It's been around longer than that. IIRC, it's as old as AT.

I used to have about 6 teams at one point... but got rid of them all as I chose to narrow my focus. I will get another team at some point in the future though. The later version of the game is one of the most elegant systems ever produced IMO. Even the first version was good for its time and a lot of fun.

Its older than AT it was around before I picked up AT when I came out (however it probably has the record for longest stable system, it has been tweaked but he core rules are the same now as they were in the early nineties).

Good grief, rave reviews all round!
Thanks guys.
One more question - if it's that good, and it DOES have some following - why's it stuck with SG and not better flogged by GW? Because you just need a team of models, so if you play BB you wouldn't invest in a mega-army?  ???

If you check out NAF Home page or Talk BB you will see that it has a large interantional following and pretty active competition base.

Great game that is both as fun and serious as you make it!

I think you have hit the nail squarely on its head - you only need a small, finite number of minis to play. Even if you throw in minis for injured players, star players and cheerleaders, it's still not that many minis compared to all other games.

I believe it is for this same reason that we will probably never see GW release another game that doesn't require minis, which is a shame because GW put out some really good games in the '80s.

Though saying that I believe in some countries sales occasionally spike enoughto put it into third place (happened in Germany to be sure) and there is occassionally talk of making it a core game as a way of getting someone hooked.
