This thread is intended to review Drone Sentry turrets. In particular:

1. Cost
2. Size of formation
3. Should they be included in the Tau list

Well, I suppose I should have added that the previous Drone Sentry turrets had the following abilities:

1. Armed with a markerlight
2. No CC or FF values
3. Immobile
4. Zone of Control
5. Teleport
6. Formation of 6 @ 75 pts

As previously discussed - I concur. I'd like to see them in the main list for proper playtest. Players are going to have to be cautious of coherency when deployed.

Cheers,

With the renewed push for the sentry drones inclusion in the main list perhaps we can get some further feedback on this idea.

And to start with can I ask what type of unit are they (AV/LV) and what armour is proposed?

Are they air dropped in or is it representing hidden units activiting?

As reguards deployment why not make them air transportable as an alternative load for a Tigershark?

Or have them be abled to be carried by a Manta missile destroyer - dropping them off during a move (they pop out and scatter themselves as a stop gap measure until ground troops arrive to secure the area properly).

IIRC , they should be teleporting Units. The transport option has its merits (I like them) , but like the LVs aren?t incorporated yet as transport option for the Manta , I doubt they will do it with the sentrys. Same goes for the Kroot. Maybe we should make another thrad regarding the transport options of the Support Crafts?

Cheers!

Any reason to take any version other than the twin linked missile pod version?

45cm AP4+/AT4+ VS 15 or 30 cm AP4+

Hmm...

Those stats that Heckler mentions seem instinctively a bit...high.

Perhaps an abstraction would do well. So, for any given stand their weapons are listed:

Drone Guns:
30cm AP5+/AT5+ -
OR
15cm MW5+

But the drones can chop & change between them as needed. IMO it just represents a bit more of the whole...'thing'(MW can incorporate, in a way, the TL Plasmaguns *or* the Fusion Blasters firing alongside some Burst Cannons). Also, in this regards, I think a FF6+/5+ would be kind deserving, but restrict them to an airdrop or straight forward normal deployment.

Teleport whilst nice in the idea of 'pop up' or very high altitude drops, doesn't sit right with me. The reason alot of folks allow premeasuring is because they accept on this kind of scale they'll have some form of decent targetters/comms/training that means they don't fall for shooting someone they can't reach. A roughly similar reasons stands to order in my mind about the turrets, that troops would be told 'Watch out for these things They're pop-up turrets, don't be fooled'. It might have worked a few times, but as soon as the enemy commanders 'catch on' the ruse would be done. Permanently. Thus airdropping should work neatly.

In this case we are discussing the Markerlight armed drone sentry.

They have teleport to represent hidden units activating.

Any answers on the previous questions?
can I ask what type of unit are they (AV/LV) and what armour is proposed?

That is correct, we are speaking, or are supposed to be discussing the markerlight version.

To my knowledge I don't know of, or hadn't heard anyone talk about the other versions, so it doesn't appear to bother anyone if they stay on the collectors list and be used for scenarios.

However, if there isn't a strong preference against, I'd like to see the ML Sentry towers included as I think they add a nice twist to the list without putting things out of whack.

I've had them in my OB for at least the last dozen or so games and only really seen them get on the board 3-4 times, let alone have an impact. Proabably the most impactful was against the Saim Hann where I used them to bait a trap, which would have been quite successful if the sprung trap would have delivered the expected results.

Still they seem to have a lot of promise tactically as people aren't really sure what to do with them.

Regarding Tactica's comment about coherency.

This unit is one in which I would definitely enforce the armor save rules, as written (i.e. roll for each specific unit after allocating hits). If they break coherency, at least of the sections is going to die due to being immobile and out of coherency.

Something to think about when placing them...

And Honda, you are right in that most people don't know what to do with them ... once. Given the number of markerlights in your army the unit is a joke, except that it is a 75 pt activation.

These things don't get an activation after the first turn, do they (seeing as they don't shoot or move)? If they do, they are probably costed too low. Does anyone else have a < 100 pt activation?

Shouldn't need coherency ... what are the Trantula rule ... those are sentry guns ... yes ?  Once dropped they would go on Overwatch (SM1 First Fire) ... shoot at any enemy in range  ?  When a target moves in to LOS ?
