Recently I bought a couple Pirates of the Spanish Main (PotSM) boosters. Mainly because of good reviews, some friends played it and I like the Pirate age (played Pirates (Gold!) on the PC forever!

The cards are really good quality. The ships are easy to build and look rather nice.

The game itself is really fun and quick to play. We managed to play 3 games in 45 minutes using standard pointed fleets!

Compared to GW/SG games that's really fast & cool. No need to plan a whole day fighting. Just call someone if he has a spare hour and voila!

Do other people also play PotSM?

I think Mojarn had tried this too - and had come up with a similarly positive opinion.  :D

Yep. I bought this game so I could play at least _something_ that is related to my hobby with my kids. Plan worked perfectly.   Of course, with a 5 and a 7 year old you won't get much tactical sophistication (yet!)  but at least we're having fun.

I love this game too, and am busy building half a dozen fleets, great game.

The only problem I have with the game is the collectibility aspect. At present the Pirate fleet outnumbers the combined Spanish/English grand armada.  :(

Anybody wish to trade surplus ships?  :8):

My problem with the collectable part is that I have 4 boosters and I want more.....much more....

Indeed, there are alot of Pirate ships, maybe they think pirates fight eachother also unlike the Spanish among themselves.

When I have surplus ships I'll trade, altough that's along way from now.

Indeed its fun to build multiple fleets, escpecially at the 40pts game standard. After those 4 boosters (+2 display ships) my Spanish Armada already exceeds 70 points! My Pirate fleet is at a nice 40pts. For the English I have 1 ship + 2 crew.

I play quite a bit, and am actually an official envoy for Wizkids for the Pirates line, so I run tournaments quite a bit too :D  It's good fun, the ships look really cool, and I can teach a 10 year old to play in around 10 minutes, which is more than can be said for 40k, so it wins my vote :;):

I'm trying to restrict myself to just French (I was feeling perverse), but have been sucked in by the Barbary Pirates

What a lot do round here is pick one (maybe two, if like me they buy too many boosters) nation/fleet, and just collect them, and trade away everything else, which means getting most of the ships is quite possible.

Anyone who hasnt tried it I can strongly recommend it, but then again Wizkids 'encourage' me to say that, so maybe Im biased? :D

The biggest gripe I've heard about Pirates (of whatever variety) is that they seriously sacrificed realism for game balance.  The American 44-gun frigates (Constitution, etc) are rated in-game as being as good as a Brit ship-of-the-line (5 masts), while they should be about in the middle of the range, instead (only 3 masts, IIRC).

Oh well.. I confess - I'm into this too! :D

And as regards realism and historical stuff.. I don't think it matters one bit in this game. They made a bleeding SANTA ship for christmas of all things!

They also included the Dread Pirate Roberts (err, I mean 'As you Wish' Wesley, from the princess bride), so I know it's not meant to be real serious, it's just a pet peeve of one of the guys.  He still has every ship since the game came out.  :p

It's hard to explain Legion...

The ships are actually made out of card. ?They are 3D when assembled, but I wouldn't call it minis in the strictist sense of the word.

It a new evolution of the collectible card games such as Magic the gathering.

It's made by wizkids the same people who brought us Mage knight and Mechwarrior...for good or bad....opinions will vary :D

Look here

I have heard of people collecting fleets and play using minis rules such as "Wooden Ships and Iron Men" and "Full Sail"; A age of sail coversion from the full thrust rules.

Would the other way round work? i.e. using real miniatures and the Pirates rules?

Thanks for the site C/C !  Very neat !  I think my buddy has a set of those cardboard ships !  Cool !  I don't see why you couldn't use real minis !   :D

The Board Game Geek site for it is good too, especially for the islands :)

Pirates Board Game Geek Site

Vanvlak, it would be tricky to use 'real' models, as one of the big aspects of the game is that the number of masts represents your number of cannons (4 masts=4 cannons), and as you take hits you remove the masts (they pull out quite easily), and lose cannons. Very simple and elegant. To use real figs you would really need a ship record sheet to mark the masts off as they take damage. If you were doing that you might be better with 'proper' rules, but it could be worth a try for quick games.

And the game definately isnt too realistic, magic and the supernatural play a significant part in the abilities (as written anyway).
