Hi Guys,
I'm getting ready to step down as 'Nid Champion. I've found a successor and I just need to ratify it with Jervis and the "leadership." I didn't want to step down and leave SG and Jervis short-handed.
I love Epic, but it has died in my area. All of the web site / organizational changes and inconsistency have killed E-A as a game where I live, which was at one time, one of the biggest bastions of Epic worldwide with regular tournaments even after the E-40k debacle.
As much of the game, keeping up with the changes in E-A are too much for a single person. Without my mates playing and helping me to keep track of the rules as they evolve, I can't fairly stay 'Nid Army Champion and give the fans what they deserve.
And with infrequent and inconsistent communication with my leaders, I don't have a desire to further create and develop a list that may be completely thrown out the door at a whim. For example, I was specifically prohibited many times from developing 'Nid units from "Christmas Past," but Forgeworld can turn around in an instant and recreate those same 'Nid units as "Christmas Future." The Trygon is one example and the new 'Nid aerial barrage baloons are another.
In other words, I'm "out of the loop" when it comes to being a list writer. I'm unable to innovate much since I'm following the directives put to me. I want the freedom to include more creative input that I'm not going to get.
It really makes me feel like my work on the list and everything I put into it is irrevelant.
Not only that but Specialist Games has never taken the time to post the latest 'Nid lists on their web sites anyway. I have consistently had to mail them out as documents and have them posted on Chern's site for download as a PDF.
In other words, I'm not abandoning ship, but I'm not staying at the helm either. And this is largely because I'm not really at the helm, I've been more of a newspaper ombudsman than a true list or game developer.
I have no complaints about Jervis though. I still think he's a fine guy if a bit overworked and unable to communicate with his "chiefs" enough to make me want to stay a "chief." I'd either rather work for free for a boss that communicates with me more often or be my own boss.
The new proposed 'Nid Champion has asked me to help out and stick around, but I won't be putting the time into the game that I once did.
And for all of you scavengers out there, I WILL NOT be selling off my Epic collection! I'm still a huge fan, just one who needs a change of pace. And I still have one of the biggest and best 'Nid collections around! ?
Long live the Hive Mind!
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
P.S. For those of you who are interested, I'm developing a science fiction game of my own called "Planetfall." More information can be found here:

Hi Guys,
Thanks!
To be honest, while I do feel I deserve a lot of credit for my early work including a number of really cool ideas, I have not done anything with the 'Nid list for about six months and I'd like to pass it on to someone who will work on the list rather than keep it myself.
I've organized ideas for updates since then, but it takes alot of work for each revision and I don't want to put in that work with the current conditions outstanding.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Jimmy,
Quote (JimmyGrill @ 30 Dec. 2005 (22:27)) | Sad news, but I totally understand your position - I decided to step down for very much the same reasons. |
When Chern stopped playing E-A, I knew it was abad thing since we've kept the Epic torch going for a LONG time.
Without someone to playtest with, I don't think it's fair to stay Army Champion.
And Chern and I were the last folks playing locally. Everyone else gave up the ghost long ago.
Quote (JimmyGrill @ 30 Dec. 2005 (22:27)) | I still hope GW can convince me in the future that Epic is *not* totally falling apart ? |
Well, I don't expect them to convince me for the simple reason that I don't feel so entitled, but I can hope like you, that E-A isn't steered into the ground.
I've stayed optimistic about E-A for along time, but my store of patience and optimism is just about used up.
We can still hope though...
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

I really do not understand how someone can quit playing a game ?if there are no new rules or models to play with that are coming out.
You have fully functional game-rules, you have a lot of models to play with. Why then quit?
I don't get it.
Even if GW decides to shut down SG completely and forever I sure as heck wouldn't quit plaing E:A or BFG.

Hi BL,

Well, everyone wants to be part of something that is "happening." New rules and game support show that something is "happening."
When the company stops supporting a game, they have abandoned it. That's not a good sign to customers. They want to feel supported and not abandoned.
That's pretty much it in a nutshell.

Well, I, for one, am not quitting, but it does make it hard that all of my mates are downright exasperated by GW, SG and the lack of stability in one of our favorite games.
When my friend, Chern, no longer wanted to play, I knew there was something wrong with things how they currently stand.

I also like BFG, but if noone local is playing, it makes it hard for me to play. BFG dried up long ago in my area.
And now, E-A is practically dead in my area.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

It is a shame to see you go Maksim. Youwere a great Army champion, putting up with all of our "great ideas" and sorting out the good ones. Only to be shafted by GWs policies oln what they want you to do.

I think that there is an important point about the difference between quitting the game and stopping work on the development.
I dont believe that Maksim is quitting EA at all, but the AC job does take time and dedication. Stepping down from the Bug AC role doesnt necessarily mean that M has given up on EA, just that the effort required is no longer worth the reward that he gets from it.
All the best.
