I know a number of people have based there epic units on round bases instead of the square or rectangle. What size(s) are about the best, 25mm and 30mm? I am trying to work out two round sizes. Similar using 10mm x 40mm for regular units and 20mm x 40mm for command untis or big models like terminators. Any info or photo references showing the size and figures mounted on it would be appreciated.
Thanks -Audrey

Hi Audrey,
MarkConz used 20mm round bases (tiddly winks or plastic chits).
I use a few different sizes:
3/4" or 18mm
1" or 25mm
I also use a variety of other fender washers including:
1&1/4"
1&1/2"
2"
And a few others...
Occasionally I use two smaller fander washers for certain minis:
3/8"
1/2"
I almost never us the rarer 7/8" fender washer.
I've been experimenting lately with oval shapes.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

In other news, I use 1" bases - a very old picture (although no progress has been made on it!) here.

I base my Eldar vehicles and walkers on UK 1 and 2 pence pieces, which are 20 and 25mm respectively.

I've had to make my oval bases. I bought an oval template made for scrapbookers and made them using that.
I have contacted a base maker and am pursuing it. I'll let you know if they decide to pick the idea up.

Couldn't you use some wood jointing 'biscuits' for oval bases? Remembering back to my D&T days, I recall they come in all sorts of shapes, including oval. They might be slightly thick however- although it might be an option worth investigating.
Cheers, ~G
[edit] As ever, google is my friend: http://images.google.co.uk/images?q=wood+biscuit&hl=en
There are a few pics here- have a look in some DIY shops to see if you can get some that are thin enough.

Yes, thanks. I considered this. The problems are that they are quite thick for Epic minis. They also usually come in MDF of wood-based, which I dont like painting!
Before anyone asks, yes, I looked at oval cutters for plasticard, but their minimum radius is usually too large.
Thanks.

Would anyone be interested in odd shaped bases like pictured below? I have been thinking about making and casting these for my own figures. If I go through that whole process then I might as well offer them to others. I have not completely decided on whether to use round or odd shapes.

Hi Audrey,
Your bases are very cool but I'm not looking for any like that right now.
I have a bunch or irregular-shaped bases that came with my GZG figures and I'm not overly fond of them.
I've been thinking about building movement trays for my Epic infantry so I prefer a regular-shaped base.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Agreed. They look very similar to GZG bases, except that the GZG ones hold two, three of four minis and are a little smaller.
