ForgeWorld has heard us :)

From the FW-Newsletter:

Tyranid Floating Spore Sacks
Tyranid Floating Spore Sacks trail long, groping tentacle sensors underneath them and are full of bio-acid, toxins and smaller spore mines. They are larger and more deadly versions of the common spore mine clusters. Unlike ‘lesser’ spore mines, Floating Spore Sacks can drift high into the sky, forming drifting minefields perfectly capable of destroying enemy aircraft. A Spore Sack drifting high will actively seek out enemy aircraft, being drawn towards a target before exploding in a huge shower of bio-acid, toxins and chitinous shrapnel. Floating Spore Sacks carry other spore mines inside them and when the Sack detonates many of these mines are destroyed – adding to the force of the explosion, but some will be flung clear and continue drifting to find new targets. These are great! I really like the size and shape of these ugly so-and-sos; they just fit my idea of what this sort of critter should look like. Well done Daniel!Warwick’s rules look fun too, though I must admit I don’t really want to be on the receiving end of them!

Tyranid Floating Spore Sacks

Wow, those things look nasty!

With Zoanthropes (and other critters with Warp Blast), the Tyranids have some pretty effective and potentially wide-spread AA defense; I've never found it lacking.

As to Floating Spore Sacks:  would these be a unit or a weapon which things like the Greater Synapse Node would have?

Indeed they do, however they look smaller than I expected from the discription, they don't look like they can carry several normal sporemines.

As for use, I say add them as a weapon to GSNs.

Another idea would be a slight increase on points cost on all synpase creatures and have them as a blanket effect. saying that each enemy aircraft suffers an AA7+ hit whenever it enters the table.

How would we model it as an upgrade?

And Hena, stop chatting and get us that battle report done. :D

Are you kidding!!! They are HUGE!!  :D

Personally I would prefer to give them stats and have them on the table like a barrage balloon, with a limited AA range and effect. Reason being that a 40k bioacid mine would be just the right size (and looks exactly the same) to represent one of these. Plus you can buy the 40k mines seperately. Plus they would look really cool drifting around the table over the tyranid forces...

Only twice the height of a guardsman. with the head section being about two to three times the size of a normal one.  So can only hold one to two normal sporemines as well as its own explosives (whatever that is the pdf link sends me to the wrong rule set  :( ).

What sort of rules would you give them?

Random movement and as a seperate brood formation or have them tied to a brood formation

with a short but powerful AA attack?

What kind of creature would it be? ?Uncommon brood or independent swarm (say of 3-6?).

Here are some possible stats:

Aerial Spore Mine
Type ? ? ? Speed ? ? ? ? Armour ? ?Close Combat ? Fire Fight
LV ? ? ? ? ?15cm ? ? ? ? ? 5+ ? ? ? ? ? - ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?4+
Weapon ? ? ? ? ?Range ? Firepower ? ? ? ? Notes
bio-acidic blast ?15cm ? ?D6xAA6+ ? ? ? ?one-shot
Notes: scouts, skimmer, self-destuct (an Aerial Spore Mine used to make any attacks is destroyed after the attack is resolved)

Good start.  I wouldn't give it a FF attack.  also I would call them skimmers and say they are always popped up.  Definatly put them into independant, they can't really go to ground.  Also it forces a tactical choice.  Do you go for AA cover biotitans or a lictor out activation army?

I tweaked the self-destruct and the FF value a bit, since they can, potentially, affect ground targets. ?But if they do, they're now destroyed as well.

As an alternate to the AA attack, what would be the the thoughts on D3xAA6+, disrupt, one-shot?

Hard to say.  BMs effect on aircraft differ alot from that of ground formations.

Also they background says that they arn't always  airal so what about having it as

AA whatever is decided
or
0cm 1BP

Re-reading the .pdf made me think of giving them 1BP as well, but it would probably need to be 15cm range to make any sense, since no enemy unit would ever be in range at 0cm! ?*laugh*

I'm going to keep pondering on this... as I wait for the rest of Hena's battle report... ;)
