Guns, Germs and Steel - Recomended reading in the peace studies course I had to do as part of my degree.

I've read it. Excellent book. It will probably be that kind of book that I will periodically reread.

I really enjoyed 'Virtual Light,' so I'm just starting what is the loosely-tied sequel to it, 'Idoru:' http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....3024646

Finished "Cross the Stars"... good reading, some good insights on the panoply of Drake's Slammers!

Started Todd Johnson's "Slammer's Down" role-play novel! It's fun, and take place in the Hammer Universe... maps, charts, etc.! It's not chapters, but sections, at the end of each section you have to make a decision and based on that it tells what section to go to next. Battles take place, tells you what charts to use and ratings. Roll 2D6s... but I was "working" at the gym and just randomly ask my friends for a number between 2-12 inclusive. Neat system in paper back form. I successfully completed my mission!

Started with 8 Blowers and 12 squads of Skimmer Inf... ended up with 3 and 5 left! Hammer was a bit annoyed with the loses but I was promoted anyway! :D BTW Todd Johnson was a SGT with the Scouts of the U.S. 1st Inf. Div.(FWD) in Europe. I can see it in his writings and obviously Drake approved! I'll run/read it again. Got it online as it is OOP! ? Hopefully Hammer's Slammers VOL.1 will be in my hands before Santa arrives!
(Maksim, Tom and Doug had me order them a copy too !) :D

Your going to hate me for this L4 but... :p

Evidently theres a limited edition (250 copies) leatherbound signed by Drake copy of volume 1.

http://www.nightshadebooks.com/book.aspx?bookid=101

And I have to admit I'm moderately surprised at how cheap it is at only $60... I think Neil Stephenson's Baroque Cycle books were $200 for the limited edition so $60 is actually a pretty darn fair price.

And for those who enjoy fantasy as well as sci-fi try finding "Gardens of the Moon" by Steve Erikson. It has to be one of the most original fantasy series I've read in years. Not just another Tolkien rip-off.
