Way back in late September / early October I rashly said I'd do a battle report on a solo wargame I was doing, about a fictional second battle of Hampton Roads. Well I've finally got round to writing it up at the URL below.....enjoy!

Interesting - thanks for the link, Ghost. Have you ever tried Hamerin' Iron? i've got a copy, but never tried it yet. And Peter Pig do a nice line of ACWships, but the scale is 1:600

Nice stuff GG! Interesting period and a great looking set up you have there!
Its been along time (over a decade!) since I played a solo game, must try it again soon. They are particularly suited for playtesting I think.

Vanvlak : I haven't tried Hammerin Iron yet but I think it may now be worth a purchase. I did read somewhere that it was hex based, which is one of the things that has put me off in the past (I'm too mean to shell out on a hex cloth), is this correct?
The difference in scale is awkward, but I guess with some adaption they could be made to fit 1/1200?
Justiniel : Your entirely right, the amount of unpainted metal lying around my shed is an embarrassment to any self respecting wargamer, I shall start painting next week!!!!

Markconz: Thanks, yes solo play is great for testing rules, no arguments over what means what, (especially good as i am a poor general and a bad loser!).
In my case since due my hours of work I'm not always around when other gamers are, solo gaming means I can play a couple of turns before or after work and don't have to rush to get a game finished in an evening.

Not necessarily. It uses hex equivalent dimensions, and a ship has a hex are around it, but using some hexes cut out of card is enough. In fact the rules do not call for a hex board, just a number of cut-outs to sit each ship on (to define facing directions etc.). The ships are a bit big for 1:1200, if you're ooking for exact scale representation. If you're not so strict, however... Here's the 'Pig catalogue: oink!

Great report and lovely terrain - now get those vessels looking ship-shape Admiral!
Inrteresting that the RN Squsron's strength was its gunnery - a historically factual thing as the RN spent more money on gunnery training than anyone else in the period.
Thanks for sharing!
