If it does weigh that much (35#s?) ... after being an infantryman for 10? years in the 80s (M60 MG = 23#s, just checked my Janes to see IIRC !), this big pointer does not appear to worth the weight ! :p  Powerguns (!) vs. lasers and phasers are like an assault rifle vs. a bolt action rifle ... IMO ... but I've never used a Powergun, Laser or Phaser !

Huh.  Course, that's 23 pounds unloaded.  Add 200 rounds of belted 7.62, and (well, that's why we call them 'grunts').

And here they told me that we got the 'lightweight' M60E3, all 23 pounds of it.  plus ammo.  to hump 45 feet up a vertical ladder to sit in the bridge of a submarine.

'Momma, momma, can't you see/My recruiter lied to me?'

Shoot, L4, 1cm powerguns are like a shoulder-fired .50 rifle, condensed into a pistol.  The 2cm shoulder weapons are closer to a 30mm Bushmaster chaingun, and the tribarrels are essentially a GAU-8 (the A-10's big gun).  I don't think there's a gun on earth that is the equivalent of a 20cm tank gun.

Tas, that's why I wanted my Surefire instead of that monster.  Size of a mini-maglite, brighter than a 6 D-cell or rechargeable Maglite.  I've used mine as revenge against a Chief who brighted me during a field day (that's an all-hands cleaning evolution for the non-naval personnel out there).  I was shoved so far into an outboard that all you could see was my feet, Chief walks up, taps a foot, I turn around and get a facefull of rechargeable Maglite.  Much profanity ensues, and Chief gets my little surefire full in the face.  I can see ok in a couple minutes, he's still seeing spots an hour later (and cussign about it).  I never got brighted again, but did have to show off the Surefire a lot.

Yeah, ROEs are a [expletive deleted].  Not allowed to shoot until after you've come under fire, or someone's so close that you'll still take damage if they've got a big bomb is ... aggravating.

Yes I know the deal !  With everything the '60 is a heavy Mother !  I was in  4 Infantry Bns in the time when on active duty ... humped and Grunted a lot !     But you got that right !  An M60 is a hand full not to mention an M2 (Ma Deuce ) .50 cal !  The firepower of a Hammer force would literally be out of this world !  The Mech Co. I commanded ('87-'89), we had 76 M-16, 18 M-203 GLs, 18 M-249 SAW, 11 M-60 MGs, 15 M2 .50 cals and about dozen + 9mm Beretta pistols ...  No where near the firepower of Alois and the Boys !

Until one of these things can disintegrate someone, I'm not impressed.... :p

Primarch

Ahhh...ye who do not have to live by highly constrained Rules Of Engagement.... ?

Hi!

Perhaps the military should invest in augmented power armor, help those infantrymen carry all that stuff....  :;):

Not until someone perfects a REALLY compact power pack. otherwise we'll see it come complete with a 50km extension cord.

EDIT: Just for laughs, it is said in the Finnish army that there are two kinds of mortars in the inventory: heavy mortar and g*ddamn heavy mortar. The latter is actually the 81mm one while the former  is 120mm one. Reason? Well, the 120mm mortar is always transported while the 81mm one is manportable.

As for power and stuff - you'll remember, from my continued mention of it, that I 'own' a 9kW lascannon at work - it's a couple of metres long and almost as high, and over a metre wide; and it's got a pair of chillers which are even larger cooling it down.
Oh, and did I mention the electricity substation.....      :p

Mojarn:  There's portable, and then there's luggable.  Sounds like you know the jokes about why infantrymen are called grunts from firsthand experience, too.

'There's two reasons that infantrymen are called grunts.  The first is, have you ever heard them when they pick up their rucks?

*grunt* This fething thing's heavy.

The second is, have you ever heard what people around them say when they walk by after 3 days in the field?

*grunt* (whispered) those guys stink!
