Benkathi
? ? ? ? ?The Benkathi are a violent species native to the wilderness space of Segmentum Pacificus. ?The Benkathi value martial prowess above all else, and are fiercely competitive within their species as well as against other races. ?Physically, the Benkathi are identifiable by their fur-covered bodies, retractable claws, and sensitive eyes, similar to those of Terran felines.
? ? ? ? ?Though the Benkathi are slightly behind the Imperium technologically, their vessels have a distinct advantage in combat: size. ?Benkathi dreadnoughts are spaceborne military complexes, larger than an Emperor class battleship and with more firepower. ?Bristling with weapons of all descriptions and carrying enough Benkathi shock troops to overwhelm a chapter of Space Marines, dreadnoughts? only vulnerabilities are their underprotected rear quarters, but even this weakness is difficult to capitalize on and felling one of these gargantuan vessels often requires multiple cruiser groups working in unison.

Benkathi Dreadnought ~485 pts
Type/Hits: Battleship/15
Speed: 15 cm
Turns: 45
Shields: 5
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 5

Weapons
Prow Weapons Battery(Firepower 8, 60 cm, Front)
Prow Launch Bay(Strength 4, Mauler: 15 cm, -)
Port Weapons Battery(Firepower 8, 60 cm, Left)
Port Lance Battery(Strength 4, 30 cm, Left)
Starboard Weapons Battery(Firepower 8, 60 cm, Right)
Starboard Lance Battery(Strength 4, 30 cm, Right)
Dorsal Torpedo Launcher(Strength 6, Speed:30 cm, F/L/R)
Aft Weapons Battery(Firepower 8, 30 cm, Rear)

Notes:
Movement: Benkathi Dreadnoughts are massive vessels, nearing the scale of small space hulks. ?Dreadnoughts do not reduce their speed for moving through blast markers or similar phenomena and may not use Come to New Heading special orders.

Boarding: A Benkathi dreadnought is home to thousands of shock troops, all skilled and bloodthirsty warriors. ?Benkathi ships double their values in boarding actions. ?Hit and run attacks from Benkathi ships and ordnance receive a +1 modifier, and hit-and-run attacks against a Benkathi ship get a -1 modifier.

Ordnance: Benkathi vessels deploy Mauler Breaching Pods from their launch bays. ?Maulers are assault boats with speed 15 cm. ?If intercepted by enemy fighters, roll a D6 and on a 4+ do not remove the Maulers.

Benkathi Dreadnoughts may launch regular or boarding torpedoes.

[Notes: My goal with the Benkathi was to create a combat oriented species and, at the same time, create a mammoth warship, a true dreadnought. ?While not in the same league as the orks or the tyranids, I wanted a race that would cause the Imperium to say "Damn, there goes the neighborhood" whenever one of their ships is spotted. ?Visually, their ships obviously would be large and bulky, ?like the alien ship that's shot down at the beginning of the Fifth Element.]

Wow, big ship.
Fluffwise cool, lots of weapons. Only thing I wonder is when they are capable of building this vessels and the IN has trouble with them, why no exterminatus on them yet?

You mention them being vulnerable in the rear, but with 8 batteries and 5+ armour their that's not weak, maybe armour 4+ in the rear (or lower!?).

Well, I meant "vulnerable" in relative terms.  I think I'll make the torps f/l/r to be safe though.

I see the Benkathi as being a nusance to the Imperium.  They go out marauding from time to time and the Navy has to expend the resources to kill this gi-normous ship, but they are not such a threat that anyone has yet set out to wipe out (or even find) their homeworld yet.

I do have a slight problem with the size and overall affectivness of this Benkathi ship. Also, no escorts? or cruisers? (you could justify this by saying that they need a huge Warp drive to get anywhere affectivley (like the early Tau).

What is their purpose? Are they radiers (with an extremely slow ship!!!) Do they conquor? (If so the Imperium would be mighty pissed off and would have at least sent a Crusade!). What resource are they trying to gain?

What's so weak about thier aft? It's a 5+ armour ship?

It's real weakness is speed, but as it can ignore BM's it's faster than an Emperor! I'd suggest a 10cm movement (no more or less! like a Space Hulk), and can turn at the end of its movent (after the full 10cm).

Overall though as it is so slow, having a fair bit of short ranged weaponary will be it's death knell! (although that's not a problem game wise or even fluff wise, they'll use the weapons they've got!)

Cheers,

RayB

I recently got into the TV show Firefly and its bigscreen followup Serenity.  The Benkathi are like the Reapers from Firefly.  They go about pillaging and killing stuff, that's their niche.  No great strategic plans, they just sail off in a really big ship until they find something alive and they make it dead.  They are more feral than the reapers, and less depraved (no raping to death and then eating flesh), but the same overall goals in life.

Shipwise, the warp drive thing is a good justification, but they also have a very strong "pack mentality" if you will, and the larger the ship the more troops it can carry.  Because they are on the fringes, they don't always go into imperial space, just kind of burn their way along the border worlds and occasionally stumbling accross the Navy here and there.

Again, the aft thing is not so much that it is particularly weak, just that it is the place you can attack that you are least likely to get blown up.

What might you recommend to make it a more prickly proposition without becomming broken?  Push the lances to 45 cm maybe?  I don't mind upping the cost either.

(Lance range) I'd say keep it with 'bad' weaponary, it gives it character!

(Firefly) Isn't it Reavers?

(motives) So they're looking to kill people? Wouldn't they just 'land' on a planet and wipe out the populace? Or do they only like killing ships? (how could this be 'fluffed'?)

(getting behind it!) If you get behind it, it can just turn at the end of it's movement and blast you away! (45* is all you need to shoot someone directly behind you with a broadside!)

(movement) I'd suggest a 10cm movement (no more or less! like a Space Hulk), and can turn at the end of its movent (after the full 10cm).

Cheers,

RayB

I agree with Ray on the speed of 10cm. And I still think the rear should be 4+.

yeah, reavers, you're right.

I'll change the movement about, but I don't want to neuter the ship too much.  let's see how it looks then.

Fluffwise, they would fall between the Firefly Reavers and Orks on the visciousness scale.  They're out maurauding around like the Orks in their hulks, but it is less of a "party" than the Ork warbands.  Their motivations are less debased than the Reavers (i.e. they can be hired as mercs, provided the target/job fits their desires for killing) but they attack with the same fury that the reavers do (did you see the end of Serenity?)

From a more practical standpoint, I created this ship to be the "big ship" in my non-aligned fleet.  The boarding, fluff, and everything kind of fell into place afterwards.

I had written up some fluff on why the Benkathi use such ginormus ships, but it doesn't fit with a Reaver-based fluff. Here it is anyway, feel free to steal any ideas from it, though I could alter it a bit to get a new race...

The Benkathi are a warlike species, but with a surprisingly strong scientific and psionic tradition. During the Benkathi Wars of Ascension, Benkath was transformed into a radioactive ball of molten glass. The survivors in the dense Benkath asteroid belt continued to survive, and continued to fight. It did not take long for the Benkathi to develop Warp Field Generators, but they had no equivalent to the Gellar Field. The prototype Warp ships returned from their test runs overrun by the demons of Khorne. Benkathi psionicists fought against the demonships they had spawned. The next test flight used nearly one thousand PsiTechs, weaving a warding pattern in concert. When it returned, the Wards held in the center, and the ship was at war with itself. The idea of warp travel was written off by many of the asteroid nations. One enterprising nation, falling on hard times in a major war, decided to fit it's entire asteroid with warp generators, while nearly the entire city population was involved in the ward. It worked, and the suprise attack through the Warp won them their war. The Benkathi soon began sending their asteroid-cities through the void. Free from the constant attacks of other Belkathi, the asteroids no longer focused their efforts on repair, but on improvement. The asteroids slowly transformed into massive warships.

The one problem I have with them being reaverlike is a lack of emphasis on boarding. Yes, they have those maulers, but where are the grapples and harpoons they used so infamously in Serenity and Firefly?
