Hi Guys,

My Desert Ferrin are making an outing against an Eldar force on Monday & its against a guy who outclasses me tactically hands down.

So - any Advice??

We're playing 5000pts but all I know about his army is that there will be a pair of revenants in the tangle, which I know he will use to devastating effect having watched a couple of his games lately!

Otherwise he could field anything (although I believe he's recently bought got a Vampire Raider, so I'm kinda expecting Aspects by airmail...)

Any tips much appreciated - I may have been involved in E:A from its starts in one way or another, but I've hardly played since its release & it feels like I'm starting again!

A stack load of arty and AA is my fave tactic vs the eldar I've played. His infantry hate your arty so his aircraft will love those as targets so your AA needs to be heavy.

Put as much stuff on OW as you can to try to break up his hit and run tactics and plaster his revenants with as much OW MW TK as you can = SHT coy. Barring that, drop as much arty you can spare on them too as the more hits you can put on them the more chance they have of of failing a save. Also, a Spacecraft with pinpoint attack will help you hit em when they're behind cover.

Just my 2 cents

The Revenants are just as vulnerable to normal AT fire as MW/TK fire due to the Revenants not having re-inforced armour ?(they get a 3+ Holofield save against any attack).

What size table?

I always take a couple of deathstrikes for laughs. They make their points back just don't waste them against holofields.

I've been playing Siegemasters a lot so i'd say bunkers and artillary. You have the rt at least!

Manticore batteries are nice addittions, don't be afraid to alpha strike for the added Bm if you reckon you will break a target. However I love using them against fleeing eldar (as BM don't stick with them turn for turn unfortuently). Basilisks are also neat against elder, if only for that very long ranged direct fire ability. I don't know if I would field a company - maybe!

Hydras are a must everywhere as is having a supreme commander.

Flyers at 5000 points get chewed up unless they are very good so flak is a better option. A squadron of thunderbolts is compulsory for me though (no tactical reason I just like them) and could be a laugh.

Infantry garrisons on objectives form speedbumps.

As its eldar I'd also do cheesy stuff like giving the Leman russ ogryns in chimera. Oh and vultures are good for turn one AT burst of firepower.

Essentially if you are outclassed try and out firepower him, hopefully with stuff that ignores clevel clogs eldar hiding techniques.

Overall though I'd take my siege army and see if he has enough shuriken :)

I agree with what's been said.

One thing to think about is Basilisks.  Even though most people prefer Manticores, with Eldar Hit-and-Run and PopUp attacks, Basilisks on OW can be great area denial against Eldar.  120cm range to pick off popup attacks is pretty sweet.

Thanks for all the tips guys.

With only 3 Hydras available to the Desert Ferrin, they'll certainly all be taking to the field, as will my two lightnings (CA thunderbolts.)

I'll certainly be taking a regimental command company, but I think I'll dismount my other & field them as a normal infantry Co so they can be garrisoned rather than the Mech Co. I usually take.

Artillery is certainly being fielded. Possibly in two companies, or as a company of manticores & some Basilisks used as support units for Direct fire as mentioned. I'd forgotten their direct fire capabilities last week- could ahve been useful then too!

Good points well made & taken on board about the holofields being just as effective against MW / TK weapons as they are against normal AT fire.

Thanks again, I'll let you know how it goes

Depending on the army he is taking I would also consider taking bombards... my typical ulthwe opponents have lots of guardian units in cover - nothing goes splat quite as satisfyingly as space elves hit by a bombard

Thanks for all the tips guys.

I'm afraid I dont have time to do a full report, but hopefully I'll be getting in games more regularly now (ie more than once a year...) so you never know - maybe sometime soon!

It wasnt the crushing defeat I was expecting.
It was a defeat.. but I gave him a run for his money!

First turn was appalling. 2 Artillery Companies totalled 1 wraithguard stand killed. No other casualties.

Overall, my 2 warhounds managed to dish out an immense amount of damage. Well, if an immense amount is the killing of a single guardian stand & taking one wound off a revenant. Yup, that was the total between them! They got hammered by the enemies revenants & one was destroyed on turn two, breaking the other. The last turn saw the remaining one get assaulted & subsequently destroyed. Need to re-think titan useage!

Eldar Certainly do have control of theair & if I upgrade the Ferrin at any point, More Hydras will be high on the list. My Thunderbolts came in to intercept his Vampire raider on turn one, but were shot out the sky by his firestorms before making contact. Next time I'm using that 150 points to field another unit of sentinels & possibly upgrade my two SHT support units to a second full company (army was 4950 so have 50 points extra to play with) until I get more hydras painted!

Overall a great game, and one which shall be repeated after my Winter FoW Offensive. We're also plotting for a 4 player, 5000pts each game in the new year - that one I'll definitely try to get pics of  :blues:

Note I didn't advise actually attacking with the Thunderbolts, i just have them for looks :)

So did you enter it in Battlestats hmmm? :)

Great line!
