Dakeshi
? ? ? ? ?The Dakeshi are an enigmatic race native to the Palladias nebula in the Ultima Segmentum. ?Little is known of their race by outsiders, as every expedition into the nebula has vanished with out a trace. ?What is known comes through second-hand accounts of contact with Dakeshi ?Emissaries?; small squadrons of Dakeshi ships sent to explore space outside of their nebular home. ?It is believed these Emissaries are searching for portents that fulfill their religious prophecies, but what exactly these portents are or what happens when the prophecy is fulfilled remains a mystery.
? ? ? ? ?To date, the only Dakeshi vessels contacted have been small, escort-scale craft dubbed Swarmships, a reference to the squadrons of small craft each carries. ?Though each ship mounts none of its own weapons, the fighters, known as Swarmers, are agile craft that mount weaponry capable of damaging even capital ships.
? ? ? ? ?It is postulated that larger Dakeshi vessels exist, but if they do, no one who has seen them has lived to report it.

Dekashi Swarmship(30 pts)
Type/Hits: Escort/1
Speed: 15 cm
Turns: 45
Shields: 1
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 1

Weapons
Launch Bay(Strength 1, Swarmers: 45 cm, -)

Notes
Ordnance: Swarmers are treated as interceptors with speed 45 cm. ?Additionally, swarmers may attack capital ships as bombers, but they always only one attack and this attack is not reduced by the target?s turrets.

Nebular Race: The Dakeshi are native to nebular gas clouds, and their ships are specifically designed to operate within them.  Dakeshi Swarmships and Swarmers suffer no penalties or damage for moving through gas/dust clouds.

[Notes: For anyone familiar with the original Homeworld game, the fluff is based on the nebular species in the Gardens of Kadesh scenarios. ?The ships themselves were based on the tiny, darting fighters and the fuel pods that carried them. ?For this species, I liked the idea of a seemingly unknown race shrouded by a nebula, and game-wise, I liked the idea of creating an escort vessel that itself did not actually fight.]

Edit- Added Nebula rules.

Oh god, the Kadeshi. We're all gonna die.

Another way to do them might be this:

Needleship:
Type/Hits: Cruiser/6
Speed: 15 cm
Turns: 45
Shields: 2
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 3
Prow Ion Cannon  S2  30cm  F arc
Ring Launch Bays  S4  Swarmers/Advanced Swarmers
Warpnull Fields: Ships may not enter or exit the warp while a Needleship remains in play. What this actually means... I don't know.
The Swarms: +1 to all RO checks

Fuel Pod:
Type/Hits: Escort/1
Speed: 20 cm
Turns: 90
Shields: 1
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 1
Refuelling docks: Add 1 to the ordnance cap. In addition, they may launch one squadron of Swarmers or Advanced swarmers in the beginning of the game.

Multibeam Frigate
Type/Hits: Escort/1
Speed: 20 cm
Turns: 90
Shields: 1
Armour: 5+
Turrets: 0
Prow Ion Cannon  S2  30cm  F arc

Swarmers: Fighters that are resilient, but are removed after two full ordnance phases in play (like impalers). 45cm.

Advanced Swarmers: Fighter-Bombers, 30cm, hit by turrets on 6, only get one, unsuppressible attack

Well, i was not planning to flesh out an entire fleet in this instance, just a single type of vessel that is occasionally encountered around the universe.

Personally, I like creating the tension that there's something in the nebula that noone really knows what it is, but anybody that goes in to poke about is invariable wiped out.

It just occured to me that I could include an ability that allows them to ignoe the effects of gas/dust clouds, though I'm not sure if they are played commonly enough for it to matter.

The warpfield null idea creates an interesting potential for another race (don't want to cram too much into this one) that somehow prevents enemy ships from disengaging.

That's a couple of interesting things to consider.

Warpnull Fields: -3Ld to all disengage tests within 45cm.

Dakeshi of the Khareshi Expanse?

The Khareshi Expanse could be a nice utterly huge area enclosed the dense outer nebulae. In one of them could be the Dakeshi...

The Dakeshi sound interesting, the swarmers are a little fast aren't they!?
I think they shouldn't be slowed down by Gas/dustclouds.
Give them 2 turrets (think of it as the ships actual weapons).
Have you got any models? (or any ideas)
What's thier leadership?
How big can thier squadrons be (say 8!  :;):

I like the idea of a Nebulae with possibly numerous races inside (all fighting wars, making alliances and merrily going on with their bussiness without the Imperium knowing or even caring!)

On a ship preventing disengaging (actually -3Ld!), I've got an Imperial sensor ship (a Lunar using the lance fitments with antenae rather than turrets). It's a ship designed for hunting down pirates. But having played with it, I wish I chose a Lance Dauntless and swapped the broadsides (it would be so much better!) (I'm gonna do it if I find a spare dauntless in my bitz box. I have over 1000ships, it's possible! :D )

Cheers,

RayB

I have over 1000ships, it's possible!

Gee, someone actually has more ships than me. :p

I added the nebula rule, removing penatlies and damage to the ship and its ordnance for moving through the clouds.

I made the swarmers fast on purpose.  First, I had considered making the swarmers 30 cm and have two squadrons per ship, but that would end up too expensive for what I wanted.  I dropped it to 1 squadron per ship, but increased the speed, so the swarmships could try to maintain distance.  I envision standard Dakeshi tactics as being,"Try not to get blown up as you let the swarmers pick them apart."

Leadership would be normal, as would squadron size (2-6). I don't want to do too much out of the ordinary on one species.

I'm going to tuck the "can't disengage" idea away.  I'm not sure if is something that should be scenario specific, or if it is something a certain race should have (and if so, why?)

As far as models, I've given it a little thought, but not come up with anythin yet.  I've got quite a few projects on the docket aready, so it will be a bit.

Thanks for the input.

It's known most species Warp Drives or FTL things are problematic when encountering a sufficient Grav Field(only Necrons and Eldar entering the Webway strike me as real problems), perhaps suggest that it's a combination of psychic power and gravitic disturbance that provides overwhelming interference to enemy sensors and systems. The result is the ships simply can't 'disappear' as they'd wish.

Alternatively, you could simply say that the Dakeshi sensors from all the extraneous swarmers make it really difficult for any ships to simply 'drift off' without the Dakeshi noticing. Thus ships can't really disengage easily. But necrons, who auto disappear get off fine...

An interesting thought occured to me:
The Kadeshi (and everyone else in Homeworld, for that matter) don't have shields. So for the fuel pods, I'd give make them much faster/more manuverable (25cm/90*) engines, and make them rely on staying out of the way while they lob in swarms.

And Ray, here are what Kadeshi ships look like
Clicky!

The ship in the foreground is a Fuel Pod, the little things with drive trails are swarmers, and the big thing firing the Ion Cannon is a Needleship. Though we obviously couldn't copy them exactly, the idea of the hemispherical Fuel Pod design could be used.

Indeed. With the second race coming from the Khareshi Expanse (if Rownalpha want them to), we have a good start.

At the moment I began kitbashing some different looking escorts, alongside the Tobari escorts I'm doing (1 light & 2 heavy).

Would be cool if we submit all such minor little races to WR for use in mainly Privateer scenarios. But at the end when we build a substantial number of small races we release:

Chronicles of the Khareshi Expanse!

Of course all those races harass the big races once in a while!

For my purposes, I'm going to keep the Dakeshi and their home mysterious and unexplored.  By all means, however, feel free to involve them in whatever ideas you have of creating.

As to the prior question of modeling, I was thinking of somehow using a Tau Firewarrior shoulderpad as the Swarmship itself, but I'm still considering how to execute the creation of the swarmers themselves.
