I have some tyranids based on the old square bases and some on the new long ones but have a ton which I have yet to base.  I know in the rules that you are allowed to base them however you like, but is there an advantage to using the square bases so you can get more units closer to a synapse unit or for close combat purposes?

Advantages: You can concentrate them better which helps in assaults.

Disadvantages: Those barrages really, REALLY hurt!

I have mix of both with my orks, eldars and space marines. Haven't found that to be problem or one stand type being noticably better than other.

Welcome to the boards, jty3!

Square bases can allow you to get more stands into close combat. However, there is a tradeoff, since the long bases allow you to cover more ground laterally. From what I've experienced in game play, there isn't that much of a difference overall.

Welcome to the boards!

Considering I base my on hexagons, I'm not sure what to say... ?

I'd actually recommend (If you can't get hexes that is!) buying som plasticard and making custom sized bases for 'Nids, I like the more "ragged" placement on a base a horde of Bugs could take than box or line formations of them.

Hi JTY-3,

The pros and cons of the different bases balance out in my opinion. I have 'Nids based on both types of the original bases and they play about equally.

Personally, I prefer round bases and have been slowly converting all of my 'Nids to 3/4" and 1" fender washers.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Personally, if I ever get around to gluing them up, my nids will be on the long bases, facing the short side so that they look like a column of ants.

Never thought of doing them that way.  :(8:

Mine are on long ases, it makes them look like a tide of gaunts.

Bigger critter are on 2p bases, zonathropes on 1p and hierodules on large GW round bases.

Not sure about my biotitans, but they are regtangular and big :D

I go for round bases myself, just for aesthetic reasons.

Long bases can fit just as many in contact if you touch with the short end, plus its great for taking advantage of synapse, cover etc.

I have to admit I like Gun Hits wavy bases.  Much more senic than stright sides and corners.

Hi MarkCo,

I know I've asked this before, but...

*** The round bases you used were 20mm or 25mm in diameter? ***

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

That is exactly how I have started mine! They actually look really cool like that as they file towards the enemy.

Thanks for all of the replies. ?I had never considered making scenic bases, round bases, or bases of any other shape than the two GW ones, square and rectangle. ?

Would these custom bases be tournament legal? ?Not that I am planning to play in a tournament so it doesn't matter as much to me. ?

I am definitely leaning towards the custom bases though because I want to make a nice Epic set that my friends, gamers and nongamers alike can play (There will be 3000K of Space wolves, already painted to choose from, and about the same in Tyranid troops, which I am still building up).

Any links to pictures of these custom bases or round bases?

Thanks in advance.
