Played another game with 'Nids last night and it was really a blast.  Played against a guy I've known for almost ten years and this was the first time we've ever played against each other!  *laugh*

It was at a different venue than where I normally play, so I wasn't able to do my normal battle-logging so this won't be a fully written up report, just highlights/thoughts.

Sorry about the delay: work, girlfriend, and a little cold all conspired against my writing.  *laugh*  I wasn't able to do my normal logging for the battle, so it's all going by memory.

I put together a "turn log" sheet that has areas for who won the strategy roll, then a columned area that allows you to quickly list, in order, units activated, order given, target, and results.  Recording rallies at the end and teleports at the start of turns is a little more fiddly, mainly just writing it in the margins!  *laugh*

I usually take quick pictures of garrison/deployment and then just build up the report from there, embellishing it as "story" as I go.

Setup

Objectives

Marines chose the table edge near the wall socket (see above photo) placed Blitzkrieg at the mid point. ?Tyranid Blitzkrieg was placed behind the forested area on the far right. The Marine side objectives were centrally placed close to the middle of the table. While the objectives on the Tyranid side were placed as close to the deployment zone as possible, out in the open, one in the midst of several bunkers and the other near forested areas.

Garrisons

Marines kept the Terminators off board.

Tyranids kept both Lictor swarms and both lesser Synapse Nodes off-board.

Marines placed no garrisons.

Greater Node was garrisoned in the forest forward of the Tyranid Blitzkrieg along with the 3 Dacto-crines, a Zoanthrope, 2 Raveners, and 2 Termagants.

Warrior Brood 1 was garrisoned in the bunker area along with 1 Zoanthrope, 2 Raveners, 7 Termagants and 5 Hormagaunts, while Warrior Brood 2 was garrisoned into the forested area with a brood of 1 Zoanhtrope, 2 Raveners, 6 Termagants, and 5 Hormagaunts.

Deployment

From left-to-right (viewed from the Tyranid edge) Marines deployed a staggered battle line of Devastators, Whirlwinds (behind ruins), Tactical (on the Blitzkrieg), Land Speeders, Whirlwinds (behind ruins), Tacticals, and then the Land Raiders almost in the corner. None of the Marines were mounted in their transports.

Hive Tyrant 1 was deployed just behind the hill on left side with 1 Heirodule, 1 Zoanthrope, 1 Carnifex, and 6 Gargoyles.

Hive Tyrant 2 was deployed around the red-ruins, just to the left, with 1 Heirodule, and 3 Carnifex.

Turn 1

No teleports

Strategy Roll: Marines

Whirlwind Battery Alpha sustains fire on Tyrant Brood 1 killing 5 Gargoyles.

Retaining the initiative, Whirlwind Battery Beta sustains fire on the Greater Synapse Node to no effect.

Warrior Brood 1 marches forward, hiding itself in ruins.

The Greater Synapse Node attempts to return fire, but the Whirlwind barrage has addled it slightly, so it moves its Raveners up near Warrior Brood 2.

Land Speeders advance to pop up and fire on Warrior Brood 1, to no effect.

Hive Tryant 1 marshals up the side of the board, respawning the lost Gargoyles. ?(My opponent was quite crestfallen at seeing this... "You can do that every turn?!")

The Devastators mount up on a double, and race towards Hive Tyrant 1's brood, debussing and laying into the Tyranid monstrosities, wiping away all the Gargoyles and scoring one wound on the Heirodule! (He felt slightly better after that...)

Hive Tyrant 2 doubles its brood to help its fellow Tyrant, just barely cresting the hill to fire down at the Devastators to no effect.

Tactical 1 advances slightly to bring more weapons to bear on Warrior Brood 1, but only manage to kill a single Termagant.

Tactical 2 doubles down the right flank, almost getting to the defensive position of the lone bunker there.

Seeing prey, Warrior Brood 2 doubles towards Tactical 2, firing to no effect, but placing many creatures within engagement range (and, as I discovered at the start of the next turn, just out of synapse range!).

Seeing trouble brewing, the Land Raiders march forward to put themselves in a good supporting position against Warrior Brood 2.

All Marine formations rallied, and Tyranids hadn't scored a single kill?

Its got to be smaller than 4x6 as the whirlwind battery A sustained fire on a tyrant brood which had set up in its deployment zone.

On a 4x6 table even if both set up as far forward as possible there is still a 90cm distance between them(whirwinds max range is 90cm).

Turn 2

Terminators perform a perfect teleport (no blast markers) just behind Tyrant Brood 1 and within crossfire range of the Devastators.

Lictor Brood 1 shows up on the hill forming a chain between the two Tyrant Broods.

Strategy Roll: Marines

The Terminators sustain fire on Tyrant Brood 1, killing the Zoanthrope and doing one more point of damage to the Heirodule.

The Devastators retain, also sustaining on Tyrant Brood 1, and the Tyrant goes down leaving a wounded Heirodule and Carnifex behind. ?(My opponent had some atrocious rolls!)

Lictor Brood 1 lick their feeding tendrils in anticipation and attempt to bring the two broods beside them in a combined assault against the Devastators, but the taste of BBQ sauce distracts them and they fail to release their pheromones, just standing there savouring the hickory. ?(*SIGH*)

Tactical 1 sustains fire on Warrior Brood 1, but the ruins give the Bugs a lot of protection and only two Termagants go down.

Land Speeders move forward to engage Warrior Brood 1 and a massive assault ensues (lasted two rounds) that sees 3 Hormagaunts killed and one Speeder crash. ?The Marines withdraw to the safety of some ruins.

The Greater Synapse Node sustains fire on the Land Raiders, laying two blast markers.

Seeing most of its brood disappear into the woodwork, Warrior Brood 2, fires on Tactical 2 to no effect and respawns with the help of 2 Mycetic Spores? and gets 4 Raveners.

Though slightly suppressed, the Land Raiders sustain fire on Warrior Brood 2 killing some Termagants, and scoring *four* lascannon hits on the lone Zoanthrope, which is the only target in line of site for them? the Zoanthrope rolls?



And my opponent curses! ?*laugh*

Tactical 2 advances slightly towards Warrior Brood 2, killing 2 Raveners, 1 Termagaunt, and 1 Tyranid Warrior.

The remnants of Tyrant Brood 1 engage the Terminators, killing one at the cost of the Heirodule. ?The Carnifex moves away and back into the Synapse range of Tyrant 2.

Tyrant 2 fires on the Devastators, killing a Razorback, and then calls down a Mycetic spore to produce? another Heirodule! ?("You can respawn war engines?!")

Whirlwind 1 sustains fire on Warrior Brood 1, but fails to dislodge any of the entrenched bugs.

Whirlwind 2 sustains fire on the Greater Synapse Node to no effect.

Warrior Brood 1 fires on Tactical 1, to no effect, and respawns 2 Gargoyles and 2 Termagants.

Neither the Land Raiders nor Land Speeders rally, while all the other Marine formations do. ?The game is quite up in the air!

I *believe* it's 4x6, didn't actually measure it... it might be a smidge short on the 4' side, as the Gargoyles were just in range of the Whirlwind shot.

Turn 3

Lictor Brood 2 and Lesser Node 1 appear in the forested area near the Marine deployment zone near Whirlwind 2 and the broken Land Speeders. ?Lesser Node 2 erupts in some ruins near the rightmost Marine side objective.

Strategy Roll: Marines

Seeing the nearby danger and knowing their missiles won't do much, Whirlwind Battery 2 *engages* Lesser Node 1 and destroys it without damage.

Noting the ease of killing the Nodes, the Land Raiders engage Lesser Node 2. ?(Not 100% sure why my opponent did that, but he wasn't trusting his lascannons after that Zoanthrope debacle) ?The Marines are utterly shocked as Rippers somehow get into one of the Land Raiders causing it to explode! ?The surviving tanks hightail it back towards their starting corner. (Oh the string of epithets I heard!)

Lictor Brood 1 engages the Terminators, killing one, but the elite Marines completely annihilate the Bugs.

In revenge for the death of its fellow Tyrant, Tyrant Brood 2 engages the Devastators in a vicious fight! ?Their armour is strong, but two Devastators and a Razorback are ruined and the Marines fall back to their lines, only one Carnifex goes down and the Tyranids gnash their teeth in victory, until they notice the slumped form of the Hive Tyrant, ichor leaking from its head. (I only failed two saves and one had to be the Tyrant! ?*sigh)

Whirlwind 1 sustains fire on Warrior Brood 1, killing a few broodlings

And once more Tactical 1 sustains fire into Warrior Brood 1, and this time their attacks are much more effective! ?As the smoke clears, all that remain are 1 Zoanthrope, 1 Termagant, and 1 Tyranid Warrior.

Lictor Brood 2 is distracted by the death of the nearby Node and only cautiously approached Whirlwind Battery 2, getting them within their zone of control. ?(Why must Lictors always fail me?)

The Greater Synapse Node gets the message from the surviving Lesser Node and sustains fire on the broken Land Raiders, the confusion of the acidic spore clouds causing the Marines to wreck another of their vehicles.

Seeing the confusion of the headless bugs near them, the Terminators decide to march towards the more organized pockets of resistance, but wading through Lictor guts slows them down and they make little ground. (Nice to see Marines fail activations on occasion.)

Tactical 2 sustains fire on Warrior Brood 2, but can't seem to get to the heart of the matter, killing only a few Broodlings.

Lesser Node 2, feeling lonely, rolls two dice to spawn and gets a single Carnifex as a companion.

Warrior Brood 1 fires on Tactical 1, killing a single Marine with a warp bolt and then respawns, with a single Mycetic Spore, bringing up 4 Termagants and 3 Gargoyles.

Warrior Brood 2 spawns as well, moving slightly closer to Tactical 2, and brings up 2 Raveners, 3 Termagants, and 3 Hormagaunts.

All but the Land Speeders amd Devastators rally for the Marines.

End of Turn: Marines 0 (none) vs Tyranids 1 (Take and hold)

Turn 4

All the big nasty Tyranids in the left part of the table go to ground? *sigh*

Strategy Roll: Marines

Tactical 1 *again* sustains fire on Warrior Brood 1 and kills a single Gargoyle.

Lictor Brood 2 eagerly rushes forward to engage Whirlwind Battery 2 and rips the tanks apart, without a single Bug lost. (sweet, sweet firstsrike!)

Warrior Brood 1 attempt to engage Tactical 1, but none of the broodlings want to leave the nests they've made over the past three turns so a few stray shots do nothing to the Marines. (That stand-off was one of the weirdest fights I've ever had in EPIC.)

Whirlwind Battery 1 sustains fire on Warrior Brood 1 in hope of dislodging them, but it is forlorn as the 'Nids take no casualties.

Knowing they can't do anything now, the Terminators march forward to contest the objective Warrior Brood 1 is holding.

The Greater Synapse Node sustains fire on the Terminators in an effort to disperse them, but only lays a Blast Marker for its trouble.

The Land Raiders double up, firing on Warrior Brood 2, but that damned Zoanthrope still won't die!

Warrior Brood 2, advances towards the Land Raiders, firing madly? and 1 Land Raider explodes, breaking the unit and forcing them to flee!

Daunted by this, Tactical 2 advances on Warrior Brood 2 in an attempt to kill the brain Bugs, but they only manage to kill broodlings?

Lesser Node 2 bubbles, and produces another 2 Carnifex?

And an uneasy silence settles over the battlefield.


End of Turn: Marines 0 (none) vs Tyranids 0 (none)
Tiebreaker: Marines 950 vs Tyranids 1413


That was a crazy close fight! ?And that was the first time my opponent had faced Tyranids? I don't think I'll have it so easy next time? might pay to finally bring a Supreme Commander. ?As well, if those Land Speeders had done *anything* at all during the game it would've been a lot different.
