Like many epic players, I'm a fan of big games, and it's looking like my first list to reach 20k and be completely painted is my Dark Angel Successor Chapter, with Titan Support.

I'm well on the way to painting all this up, but I wonder if anyone has any comments on composition/theme of this force so I can make changes before it's done. We use all experimental rules, plus we use amended rules for Reavers and Warlords (60cm range for Turbolasers, BP3 for rocket launcher).

Note: For battles over 5K we treat each full 5K part as a seperate selection from the tournament list. Also to reduce confusion in games I tend to have multiple formations of the same type. Just makes things easier than trying to remember that this formation has this upgrade, this one has that etc....
Anyway here is the list:

4 Tactical detachments, each with Supreme Commander, razorback and hunter upgrade.
4 Tactical detachments, each with Captain, razorback upgrade.
4 Tactical detachments, each with razorback upgrade.

4 Assault detachments, each with Chaplain.

2 Devastator detachments, each with razorback upgrade.
4 Devastator detachments, each with Librarian.

2 Terminator detachments, each with Chaplain.

1 Scout Detachment

3 Bike detachments, 1 with Captain, 2 with Chaplain.
3 Landspeeder detachments, 1 with Captain.

2 Predator Detachments.
4 Landraider Detachments

6 Whirlwind Detachments, each with Hunter upgrade.

4 Warlord Class Titans
2 Reaver Class Titans
4 Warhound Class Titans

3 Thunderhawks
2 Thunderbolt squadrons

I have some dreadnoughts, but don't see any place for them, I also wonder whether the Librarians are really all that necessary. Thunderhawk cargo is probably the usual Assault Marines and/or Devastators. I am also going to add another 2 bike detachments.

First up - an ambitious project! Good luck with all that painting! :D

Personally, I think that with 20k you can afford to diversify a bit more and include some of the more varied units.  For example, drop-podding either an Assault force onto an enemy artillery line or dropping a devestator unit into an ideal position on the other side of the board has some very good merit.  The pods can also hold your Dreadies to beef them up a bit and not slow down your force.

Is 1 det of scouts enough?  Some snipers would help beef them up too

And while it is a personal choice, I'd have some close orbit support too (which you'll need for those drop-pods)

Cant wait to see some pics of the whole army painted up! :p
Good luck Bro! :;):

HI Tas, thanks for the comments! Yes some orbital assets would be cool... and I was looking at the drop pod models just the other day  :D

Yes the painting is going to be a chore (it's about half done). I've just got an empty paint pot to mix up some dark angels green to the same colour as the old type (which means putting some blue into the new dark angels green).

Yes marines add up fast! Expensive formations, but cheap to buy (at least they used to be!).

Also marines can paint up fast (depending on how you do it). Unfortunately I started doing unit markings on mine so it will take ages to finish them all off. I think I will do what i did with my guard - base colours and varnish first, with the intention of adding unit markings later when I have time. Also I love the idea of adding those air recognition panels to things like you do - it will make it much easier to identify things in game. Its surprising just how similar different troop types can end up looking unless the paint job is quite distinctive!

Thanks Markco !  The VS-17 Panels work in reality and in the game !  Go for it ! :D  Yes, I think the SMs are easiest to paint also ... but I still have "beaucoup" to do !  :;):

Hi!

Thats what epic is all about, the BIG game.

While smaller games are pratical and fun, you only truely experience the "epic" feel with points values in the 5 digits. :)

I have a similar project.
My goal is to collect the whole Salmanders Space Marine Chapter complete with its spacefleet.

Never mind that the fact that I don't own 100k of any one army, the only place I could play that big of a game would be in my yard. Oooo, wait.... there's an idea!   :p  :D

Hey!  That's (almost) my idea.  I want the entire Dark Angels Chapter in Epic, their fleet in Gothic, and the 5th Battle company + in 40k.  Then maybe Ravenwing and Deathwing.  Maybe.  I'll have to find a 'landspeeder' that actually fits together worth a [censored], though.  Got any suggestions?

Back OT:  20k points?  whew, that's a dang LOT of Marines... Isn't that pushing a whole chapter's worth?

If I wasn't including titans it certainly would be!

Hehe I so far have almost half the Ultramarines Chapter. Coy's 1-4 + additionals. Most of it is not completely painted though (still monotone blue on a good proportion)

Using the PDF card design templates for each company from the old SG site (they were in one of the link pages and I forget who made them :( )

1stVeteran Company Ultras = 2650 with all upgrades at maximum(2xTermies, SC, 1x T-Hawk inc.)
2nd - 5th Battle Coy = 3285 all max upgrades (only 1xtornado, 1xtyphoon as per blister, no SC, LRs for Devs- not razorbacks)
6th Tactical Coy = 4975
7th Tactical Coy = 4890 (1xtornado,1xtyphoon per formation[x4])
8th Assault Coy = 4195 (inc 1x T-Hawk)
9th Devastator Coy = 3375 (LRs for Devs- not razorbacks)
10th Scout Coy = 1625

additional Chapter assets = 1650 (Battlebarge, StrCsr, 2x extra Thunderhawks, 2x LCs)

Grand Total Ultramarine Chapter = 39785! Hoo-ah!
only 215 pts shy of 40000 :D
