It's going to look great when it's done, Stormy.

Here is what I have after today and yesterday's work- the two halves, both shaped and beautifully smooth (I spent at least 4 hours hand sanding today ), almost ready to be formed!

The photos don't show the time that has gone into these chunks of wood sadly- trust me when I say that getting something curved and perfectly smooth is no easy task!
This photo shows the end blocks I've made up. which will allow a trouble free vac form (without them, the pointed tips would probably have pierced the plastic...).
Leaning up on the left, you can see the sheets of plastic which I'll be using tommorow. I've decided to polish up the wood sections and then rub them with beeswax to bring out the grain and give them a lovely smooth glossy finish- these will be left inside the formings, showing through the clear plastic exterior, which should look pretty cool, and will make the model look more solid.
Deadline is Friday, so got a few more long days to go!

At least 4 hours of hand sanding? Holy cow. Too bad you couldn't use a power sander.
Looking good, Stormy. I'm sure the end product won't disappoint.

Yeah, I did actually use a disc sander and a bench belt sander for taking off lots of material to start with, but the downside with them is that it is virtually impossible to get a clean, smooth finish- especially on a shape like this with all it's weird curves- thus the hand sanding to get the finished shape!

Wow - do you use finer grades as you get closer to finishing? We have a similar formof torture called specimen preparation, starting with 200 grit and moving to 400, 800, 1200, 2400 and then 1micron polishing paste...

The joys of woodwork it's starting to look good Stormy, hopefully the marks will be payback for the amount of work involved. Apart from a scale version of hip and valley roof timbers (no real need to finish as they are usually pretty rough anyway ) I've never modelled in wood, only card or polystyrene. Can't wait to see how this progresses.
