I dont want this competition to be only entered by the 'elite' painters, and possible two levels of entry is something that could be considered in 2006?

If you do that, I strongly suggest the "amateurs" section comes without prizes. Otherwise you run the risk of bad feelings arising because someone enters the second class and the others think it's good enough to belong in the first.

As a matter of fact, since the winner is going to be the best of the lot, such feelings will likely arise automatically.....

Oi, CS, are you calling me an 'elite painter' then?  :p
I don't take kindly to being called names , you know !  :/  :p
Come on, I don't even have a single decent brush at the moment! And my conversions are just opportunistic lashings of bits. (er - if I flame myself it doesn't count, does it?)  :alien: (love that alien smiley)
Anyway, look closely at the paint on my stuff - it is NOT good. CS, I think you should remove prizes - this way it will be more fun!
Come on guys - it doesn't even cost anything to enter, so what the heck? And you're all experts at downrating your own work, anyway, so it's probably better than what you're saying.
Rant over!  :alien:

Personally I like it as open for all, I'm not a great painter or modeller (too impatient  ) and don't really expect to win, seeing my efforts get a vote or two is a wonderful feeling :D
I do make allowances in voting, with poorer painters getting an up-boost for a novel idea or well executed conversion, though I know it's supposed to be about painting, I think most people here would do something of the sort. The trick is when you're up against the 'all round perfect guy'

I think two seperate competitions is a bad idea since it is so difficult to set the border between "amateur" and "elite". ?When do you consider yourself "Elite" anyway? Perhaps it would be possible to set a particular date for submissons to be made public?
Other than that maybe suggest that people who consider themselves "good painters" wait with their submission untill later on in the comp.

It is tricky. Perhaps you could have a special price for "best concept" which is awarded for stuff like cool colourschemes or small ideas which may not necessarily have anything to do with the quality of the paint job itself?

Cheers! :)

I'll be the first to admit that I downplay my painting ability. In reality I'm a decent painter, but I am not among the elite (I'll refrain from using names :p ).

The main reason I haven't posted anything is due to the lack of a digital camera. :(

Who decides who is an elite or an amateur?

No one is forced to enter and likewise no one is forced out.
Perhaps it would be possible to set a particular date for submissons to be made public?

Personally I would prefer that entries were private until judging, however when we set the rule of no discussion, no WIP and no links, people kepy trying to find ways around this that this year I didn't even try and stop people from doing it, hence this thread...

I also felt that last year, Tuff's entry should have won and should not have been withdrawn, but he was forced to by the rules.

This is a painting competition, however the end result is not about the prizes, it is about showing off not only the best in Epic painting, but also giving everyone an opportunity to try their best and show off their best attempt, so we get to see lots of Epic painted models.

I also see the competition as an incentive to get people to paint stuff, I know my Orks are coming along faster as I want to enter them in the comp.

Would it help if I removed the prizes and the judging?

I do have a camera, but it's not digital. So, in that case, I could take some pictures and then snail mail them to you?

That sounds like a good idea.

I'm a firm believer in the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) rule of thumb. I think the rules for this year's comp are great in many ways as I feel last year's comp was a bit too restrictive. Tuff being forced to withdraw his entry in indeed a good example of this.
I think everybody can remember how silent these boards became in the months up to the comp because noone could comment or post pictures of what they were working on.

Above all I think it is important to ensure that people don't start to see this comp as being elitist. It is a real shame if someone don't want to enter because they don't feel their painting skills are "good enough".
Removing prizes doesn't really solve that problem. Personally I'm in it for the glory ( :D  ) but prizes are an important incentive for people to get to work.

As for judging. Well I don't know. It is probably an individual thing. Question is really how to get people to disregard the "competition" aspect of the competition and instead focus on the part which is about sharing pics of your painted minis and enjoying the work of others.

I guess it comes down to people sometimes focussing on the negative side(though not always consciously): "If you're not the winner you're by definition a looser" or "if somebody else wins it is because your painting suck" - which is obviously not the case!

I don't think I have any good solution to the problem but I think it is important that we don't start splitting the competition up into segments based on skill which is a hopelessly difficult thing to define or judge.
It would be great if we could somehow make people feel less competitive about this and instead just focus on bringing whatever they want to share.

Even though I probably will never win a prize, I think it is a good idea to have them. While the competition is meant to encourage people to paint, which is a good thing, it is still a competition after all.

It wolud be difficult to split painters in to two groups. Doing so would be very subjective and might lead to hard feelings. So, keep everyone grouped together.

Since I wasn't here last year, I don't know what happened with Tuff's entry, but it seems to me that anyone who watns to submit something should be permitted to do so. As for the judging, I don't have a good solution for that to make it equitable.

I had an half-assed idea for a battleforce, but I really cannot find the drive to paint seriously. Besides which, there's just no point in posting my patetically amauterish attempts along with the pro-standard entries which usually populate the forum.

Why is there no point?

If you don't have the drive now what would give you the drive?

I hope (because I did post pictures) that I paint to a pro-standard!

On the contrary my painting is rushed, half-baked and very easy to copy, do easy I  even have guides on my website on how to do it...

Have a go, you have nothing to lose.

There was a rule last year that you could not post work in progress shots of your entry in order to allow everyone a fair and equal chance in the final voting by only being allowed one photograph per entry and not allowed to post multiple pics or WIP shots.

Discussion was also banned as it was felt that this could sway undecided voters...

In the end Tuff withdrew his entry, as he had posted it and then it went and won a prize at GamesDay and was in White Dwarf which meant he had *broken* the rules.

It needs to be remembered that this is an event to get more people painting Epic stuff and for us to see more painted Epic stuff. The competitive side of things is almost irrelevant.

Absolutely! I dont really mind who wins, and the prizes are there to try to provide the drive to get people to post things. We are all painting Epic (some more than others) and you lose nothing by posting a picture in the competition.

For me, the real value of this is the gallery that we all get at the end. We are still referring to the Eldar Exodites from 2003! And the single entries didnt place while the battleforce came second. And still this gallery is relevant and the entries 'famous'.

One thing that I like about this place is the huge variety of talents and abilities here. We are not all fantastic painters, but that doesnt matter. My painting is still developing and getting better slowly, and it is nowhere near as good as most people here. Does it matter? Does it stop me having fun and even displaying what I do? Nope.
