I can't understand why it should be such a problem getting the necron models. I mean - you just need 1 single android in order to make a cast and cast some more yourself (and no it's not illegal... until you start sellling).

There are plenty of guides for doing you own moulds here on the net, so get going!

A) It is never wise to advicate stealing other people's IP

and

B) Your statement is not true in all countries.

Hmmm well I actually discussed it with a solicitor and he said that the laws on this point are very international.
But well - you never know about USA.

At least in EU you can copy anything as much as you want and write excerpts from books including complete stats and so on... and you may not sell your replicas or give them away for free.

In the example for books in order to be illegal you'd have to make a reproduction of the entire work.

You may not make digital copies of cd's however..

I didn't mean any harm by posting this - only meant to make aware that this is actually a possible for getting those of so precious necrons. If the company won't make the minis - do it yourself!

I haven't had the luck to get my hands on a single android so I can't start doing my own yet.

Hi!

IP law is tricky, but in the end its a moot point since it will depend on the party with more moeny to spend on legal fees which will determine the victor. Most of the time if you just "do it yourself" dont sell it and more importantly dont brag about it no one will ever know and thus no legality enters the issue (and please folks let us not get into the "morality" of this, the differing opinions on this is neverending)

I agree with what your saying, but this is the sort of thing you should never candidly throw on a public forum. You never know whose watching....

I have met TONS of people who do exactly what you say over the years. Some of these guys are truely artists of copying stuff, but you never hear about them.

Thats the way it should be....  :;):

What Dafrca said.

In the US it is definitely illegal.  When you buy something that is IP, you guy the rights to use only the item purchased.  There are "fair use" uses which allow limited duplication, but making copies for use is against the law.

A good example I'm sure you are familiar with is software.  You can make backup copies to protect yoruself from the original being damaged as "fair use."  If you want to install it on several machines that will all be in use, you have to pay for the rights to use each one.  That is why large companies purchase software licenses on a per-machine basis.

I think what we really need here is a more readily available proxy. I can think of no GW stuff which fits AND is available.

Well anyway - it was meant as a help to those who really want to play necrons.

Too bad it's illegal in the USA.. but then again I'm not surprised. Not nearly as supprised as I was to find that it ain't illegal here! ?:D

Oh and your example is a bit off I think, at least here computer affiliated cases follow a completely different set of rules if I understand correct.

Where are you?

I was under the impression it's illegal in most of Western Europe, too.

Hi Guys,

I'm no expert, but from what I understand, the two key concepts against copying are "use" and "profit."

A small amount of "use" is permitted but no amount of "profit."

I also know that a copy is considered to over 85% identical so that with enough changes, a modified copy is not considered a copy by IP law.

Maybe someone else can explain it better than me.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

I'm in denmark.

The fact that I have it from a man working with just this kind of thing is enough for me.

But anyway - I think the subject is done. It was thread-jacking anyway!  :D

Maksim, I don't have the slightest familiarity with US IP law, but from what I understand, after having read it again and again from people who do have familiarity, is that profit has nothing whatsoever to do with it.

The various corporations, desperately trying to win a losing battle, lobbied the congress to issue more and more restrictive laws. This is way you've such gems as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which basically voids the consumers' fair use rights.

Of course this war cannot be won, since the current peer-to-peer technology is decentralized. Good luck explaining it to them, though. And don't even try starting the argument "why  the current ridiculous copyright duration is a death blow to the free market AND to the western civilization mythopoietic process".

Hi!

I agree Magnus. The internet and technology has made IP untenable. There is no way they can truely prohibit people to to copy or share anything via the net. They have of course lobbied congress to push through all sorts of restrcitive measures, but its a moot point since technology and the net makes a mockery of any such policing attempts.

Shrug... as long as people keep it to themselves and private channels of communication they can pretty much do as they will.....

IMO, once the 40K cowboys, figure what a Necron Armies is ... then the renegades at F/W might(?) make an Epic Necron Army, like they did for the T&K ? ?:{  We're still awaiting word on the F/Orks from S/G ?!?!?!?  :l
