Ok real movies then
Eight Legged Freaks Mars Attacks Kentucky Fried Movie Them Zulu
Wizards (Ralph Backshi) I'll never forget the line "I'm gonna show you a trick mom showed me while you weren't around, I am really glad you changed your last name you (Dirty foul word about lineage deleted here)" then gun fires. (This one requires AC/DCs "Hells Bells" be played before the game starts)
Yojimbo Seven Sammuri Ran
Any Godzilla Movie (by Toho) Especially "Destroy All Monsters" (And that requires playing Blue Oyster Cult before the start of the battle)
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (And yes the 45 of the theme gets played before battle commences)
Monty Pythons "The Holy Grail" (Required before D+D and the battle scenes and the siege scenes cannot fail to inspire a game of Warmaster, my Dwarf Army has a mini rabbit on the Generals stand)
I think that covers it, though I did like the movie/series "Band of Brothers" it really doesn't inspire me to pull out the minis.
And to really show you all how far out in left field I really am I'm gonna take a picture of my Epic-A Greater Daemon of Khorne which in reality is a fully painted mini of Marvin the Martian! Gotta love that "Counts As" rule!

"Glory" "Conan the Barbarian" (yes I play the soundtrack too) "Mad Max, Road Warrior, Beyond Thunderdome" "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan"
Any Monster movie (Kaiju!!)
Apolgies if some are repeats...

As soon as I get home I'll grab the digi-camera and snap a few with him surrounded by his minions. (Around August 18th is my return so be patient)
He looks pretty cool, IMHO, on the table and gives me what I cherish the most about gaming, a couple of good laughs

Hey better idea, I'll call my wife and have my son take out Marvin, some of my Chaos Lords, My Emperor Conversion, and My Yarrick conversion.
She'll take a picture with here new digital camera (probably screw it up and ask my older son how to do it) then she'll e-mail them to me then I'll screw up trying to post em.

Dune
Its a long story, but that movie got me into pic.
It wasnt very good at all (as you know), but it led me to the book (to understand what the heck it was all about). As I was redaing it, I got a flyer about soem new game called Rogue Trader being released with cool Space Marines known as Angels of Death (who sounded like Sardaukar) - thus I bought RT, and so it led me in turn to other GW products and the ret is tas Gaming History.
The BBC Miniseries was much better, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Hollywood version. Evene though it doesn make sence unless you know the book!

Just to drift slightly off topic (not that we ever drift off topic ever )
But there are some mini series and TV series that also inspire;
Band of Brothers has already been listed. Others are;
Above and Beyond Babylon 5 Quite a few of the SciFi "Made for TV Movies"
I will stop there to let others toss out some of their favorites.

By the way, has anyone seen Avatar?
I watched it with my little girl and for a kids program it is not bad at all.

NOVEL: "Dune" by Frank Herbert.

Hi Tas,
I just finished rereading the Dune novel and have to say...
I was very disappointed in it.
It is one of the few cases where I'd say the movie was better than the novel. Herbert's prose is abominable. He could have easily cut Dune by fifty to a hundred pages and kept all of the plot arcs and removed so much of the superfluous pretension.
Also, his understanding of Middle Eastern cultures stinks. The Fremen are supposed to be based on Arab / Bedouin culture, but he clearly didn't understand either group. His Arab / Bedouin cultural characteristics are based on very crude and negatives stereotypes of both the Arabs and Bedouin. To my knowledge the only contact that Herbert ever made with either Arabs or Bedouin was through the sterile pages of a book and it shows.
I've come to the conclusion that Herbert was a few steps behind the scientologists.
That being said I loved the movie.
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.

Hi Dafrca,
Frank Herbert marched to the beat of a different drummer if you get my drift.
I've done a lot of research on him looking into what his children have said about him as well as his admirers (His children have mixed feelings about him... ).
He was a sort of atheist or agnostic dpending on how you look at him and his one true religion was ecology.
He had a very pessimistic view of people and I think that comes out in his novels. I, personally prefer a little more optimism.
He also had some serious issues, perhaps phobias, with the truth and submitted his own children to lie detector tests.
He also had many family members who served the Jesuits. I think that those experiences probably led to his cyncial view of relgiion and his depiction of the Bene Gesserit.
There are conflicting reports about whether he had ecided to found a "Dune" church, but, in the end, he decided against it. There were and are plenty of people who practically take "Dune" as a religion. My local friend, Jon (About to move down to Southern California and your area... ) reveres "Dune" in a way practically akin to religion.
I've found that there are many MANY atheists amng "Dune" fans. I think they identify with Herbert's negative view of organized religion and of humaity in general.
So, Dafrca, that's why I think he was only a few steps behind the scientologists! ?
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak.
