Yes, the Korean War has been called the "Forgotten War" ... but having served there 2 tours, in the past, and watching the news it's still ongoing ...

There's a semi-fictional story out there called the Ten Thousand (IIRC), based on the Greek Mercenaries that marched from Baghdad to Istanbul after they were cut off from support.  Those guys were tough b@$tards.

Another good read is John Streakly's Armour.  Very interesting story about a drop trooper that was the only survivor of his unit.  Since his unit had been 'wiped out', the PTB didn't take them out of the drop notification cycle.  He dropped something like 22 times into a world so hazardous to life that cracking the power armor was fatal in less than 30 seconds!

Was that Xerxes's army that did the forced march across Persia?

Armour does sound interesting - thanks!

Just lashed out and got 3 new books for the upcoming leave period;
2 x 40k novels: Traitor's Hand (Cain #3) - its Black Adder and Baldrick inthe service of the Emperor.  Most amusing!.  And Crimson Tears (Soul Drinkers #3)

I also got the new Bolo Book "Road to Damascus".  Drake also has a new Bolo book out later this year.

Feedback here in due course!

Good to see this thread still hangin about!

Finished Starship Troopers a while back- Heinlein has a very conversational, pleasant to red style, and I've found myself breezing through his books recently, even if they are about weighty matters... :;):

Also finished Tad Williams' 'War of the Flowers' last week- utterly superb, and epic (as ever)!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....7015800

..It is a fantastically imaginative twisted fairytale/fantasy/parellel world tale, which mixes sveral themes and follows some beautifully realised characters through a truely 'fantasy'' land, but not one out of Brothers Grimm...:;):
Highly reccomended (but it isn't military Scifi!) :p

Now on Ben Bova's Silent War, Book 3 in his Asteroid Wars trilogy which are set in the 'Grand Tour' universe...
It is a highly realistic portrayal of space exploration and the commerical potential for the asteroid belt, but is full of larger-than life characters and plenty of intrigue, murder and corporate politicing that keeps me turning the pages til 3am most nights!
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....7015800

Can't wait to finish this- its been years since I read part one!

Indeed. Ciaphas Cain is a refreshing deviation from the standard hero.

BTW, have you read "Execution Hour" by Gordon Rennie? If not, try to get your hands on a copy. IMO the best GW novel ever. Great fleet action!

"Zavant" by the same author is also very amusing. Sherlock Holmes in the Warhammer World.

Ooh yes, Execution Hour is one of the better BL books, I need to read the sequel though!

Finished The Silent War (great conclusion to the series) :D  ...and now I'm reading Larry Niven's "Ringworld Engineers."
I'm a big fan of Niven's work, and loved Ringworld, sol hopefully this will be just as good. :)

he he - good one L4!

Yes Mojarn I have read Execution Hour and really enjoyed it.  The sequel (Shdow Point) is good too, but not as good as the first one.

Finished Crinmson Tears.  OK, but I think Ive had enough of the tragici and ultimately doomed renegade Marine Chapter concept that is going.  A good twist at the end which I wont spoil for those who want to read it.  Its OK, but dont rush out.

Next up: Traitor's Hand! And Ive heard its great! :D

Finished Ringworld Engineers; http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....7015800

A nice read, expanding on the truely vast scope of the Ringworld, perhaps not quite as effective as the original though, but still, a good followup from Niven. :)

Now on 'The Blue World' by Jack Vance;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec....7015800

I've read one or two of Vance's novels before, notably his famous 'Big Planet' (great), and this is shaping up to be a little different, but an excellent read all the same. :)

The Blue World was a beautiful little book, short for a novel (I think it was originally a short story), but a classic all the same, interesting how he imagines the new human society developing in a world very different to our own. :)

Another classic SF author next- Philip K. Dick's "The Penultimate Truth"....

Completed HH#10 "War of Honour".

Found it rather dissappointing, actually.   I guess I exepcted more after thoroughly loving the previous 9 books.  Basically you learn to hate nearly every character in it for 750 pages, then the last 200 were pretty obvious.

Still, I highly recommend the HH series overall as a great read

Hi!

I've started the soul drinkers trilogy. We'll see how it goes.
