A pleasure!

The Spartan USV is a more advanced verison with a modular approach to wider wafare applications in the maritime environment:

I was watching TV last night and had a thought, Robots could also (if smart enough) be used in non-combat roles in support of the Military.

Imagine a Supply Depo, Sgt Smith and his crew load up a large truck looking Robot with an "order" and set a unit ID into the tracking program of the robotic truck. Off it goes to find the unit. No driver per say.

At the same time, a smaller Robotic Copter is tasked with escorting the supply robot to the unit. Now you have a small supply convoy heading to a unit without people being tied up with driving. OK, real SciFi I know, but it was an interesting idea. :;):

I doesn't sound so far-fetched to me. Robots are doing all sorts of duties in manufacturing. I think robots could fill quite a few noncombat roles, like those that are repetitive and don't require much thinking.

Or even with minor oversight. Going with the Supply Convoy idea for a moment, maybe some operator could be running oversight from a remote location. Even more important, they could be running recon at the same time because of satellite feeds.

The idea just keeps growing in my head.

I could use help with my budget, bills, and retirement investments.

I could also use some help in managing my schedule and calendar.

Can't afford a CPA or an assistant, but an AI could do those things too.

Oh well, dreams are nice.

I know that DARPA has a 1million USD prize up for grabs to whoever can make an autonomous off-road vehicle.  They ran one race, which was pretty much a failure.  Evidently, a computer needs very sophisticated programming to recognize the different kinds of soil, and to react appropriately.

An interesting example is in a short story by James Cobb, called CAV.  It is based around a Cav scout section of 3 'Shinsecki' (sp?) armored cars and 7 people.  All 7 ride in the command car, Able, and the other 2 cars, Baker and Charlie, are self-piloting except in combat, where they have to put a man in the loop, by remotely piloting them (kinda like Spy Hunter, now that I think about it).

I've also seen some interesting ideas for the Ohio-class SSGN, but gotta double-check some stuff first.

Thank You, I will have to look up that story. Sounds interesting.

hey Lion, they're just about to go for the 2nd edition of the race, and there's a Humvee which had been inthe first which has now been greatly improved apparently, and could make it to the end. :D

That is a good short story, one of my favorites, and the best way I personally think the army should move toward in the future.

Yeah, the Humvee was the last competitor still in the last race, IIRC.  From what I saw, the onboard computer hadn't been told that if the machine gets stuck in soft stuff, you can floor it to get out.  The beast spent 5 minutes trying to rock it's way out of a sand patch.  Once the machine was DQ'ed, a driver jumped in and got the beast unstuck by flooring it.

Evidently it's pretty easy to have enough brains onboard to autodrive on paved roads, though.

Some of the interesting things I saw on the SSGNs were from Lockheed.  A submarine-launched, remotely-piloted vehicle, like a Predator UAV, operating in flights.  The lead plane is a recon bird, the rest of the flight carries about the same bombload as an F35.  Lead plane goes Scud-hunting, tells the ship where the launchers are, and then the bubbleheads get to ruin someones day.

After the strike, (both from the planes and/or whatever the SSGN launches directly), the planes fly back to the boat, splashdown, and get hauled back into the sub, while the sub is submerged.

Toys.  Gotta love them.
