Sounds like your computer moderated gaming is getting quite sophisticated. That will greatly aid your gaming and allow you to concetrate on proper tactcis and the like. I've never had a program like that but it would be great - I always ahd to choose between detailed games with fewer ships, or less detailed rules with laregr fleets. Now you can have both!
I'm envious Captain. Now get out there and sink me some tonnage!

Aye, Aye Admiral! ?
Just picked up a great book on the era. ?"Castles of Steel"
It's an execellent account of the war at sea during WWI. ?Very good.
I have already pciked up some interesting facts. ?
The first is that German did not expect or even want to fight England in the coming war. ?As suchy they had to real plans to matchtheir fleet against England. ?They always wanted to go after France. ?
Churchill is always Churchill. ?He made the decision to seize 4 dreadnoughts being contructed, that were destined for for Turkey and Chile. ?This royally peeved of the Turks and threw them in the "we like the Germans better" camp and utlimately would slide Turkey into war as well. ?
In the days leading up to full war. ?The Goeben and Breslau where sailing east to Turkey. ?Two British Battlecruisers encountered them and actually passed them by before turning around to give chase. ?
The problem was Germany and Great Britain were not yet at war. ?As such this grand chase occured while the the the final ultimatum was delivered to Germany to withdraw from Belgium. ?During the day, Goeben and her escort slowly pulled away and by 9:00 pm the British ships has lost track of her. ?At Midnight that night the British recieved orders at they where at war with Germany and to begin hostilities against her forces. ?
The chase was rather dramatic as each ship's crews was desperately trying to shovel coal into their boilers to gain speed. ?As it was the chase was conducted at 25 knots.

Sounds like a good book CC - I'll have a look in th Defence Library for it!
And yes thanks very much Mr Churchill, we REALLY enjoyed Gallipolli...
And lets face it, most people want to whip the French, they are so good at getting conquered you kinda feel left out if you havent occupied them at least once....

Cool link. I think I'm just getting to the part of the book where it talks about the German surface raiders and the battles to bring them down.
I just finished reading this great part of the book that involves our favorite little Battle cruiser the Goeben.
There was a British Cruiser squadron guarding the Adriatic against Austrian moves. When the report came out that the Goeben and her escort was moving to Turkey thay started off to intercept her.
They would have engaed her but the Cpatain of the Defense convinced the admiral that such an engagement would be suicide for the armored cruisers.
Despite the fact that there was four ships to one. The Goeben was bigger, faster and had bigger guns (11" vs 9" and 6".
Still the British Admiralty court martialed the Admiral for his actions. He was acquited of any wrong doing but never had a sea command again.
I think it would make for a great "what if" game.
4 British armored cruisers vs one German Battlecruiser.
Once thing that is suoriseing me is how short the "legs" of these coal fired ships are. They requires tons, and I mean tons of coal, and if they are moving at any kind of real speed they burn through it so quickly. To keep to fleet in action requires constant coaling at local bases.
It was far worst for the destroyers that simply did not have large coal capacities.
A real interesting insight.

Endurance of Nava;l units has been alawys been a problem. For War galleys it was crew endurance, Napoleoinc times it was food and supplies, the advent of powered vessels it has always been power but the evolutiuon form coal to oil to diesel to Nuclear has eased the probelm, as has Underway replenishment (where you go REAL close to a tanker, pass hoses across and pump fuel into the warship at high pressure)
I like the what if though. And that sort of action to the Admiral is typical of the RN at the time. Rememebr a guy called admiral Byng? He won a Vicotyr and was later shot on the quaterdeck of his own Flagship for not following up the enemy close enough and destroying them in detail!

Ive had a look Mojarn but no, never played it to be honest. ?Its been ages since I did large scale naval games. ?For the last few years Ive been into coastal naval skirmishing in fast torpedo boats instead!

by they way I have discovred the name of the game "Fear God and Dreadnought" comes from the crest of Jackie Fisher. When he was made a Baron he took that as his family motto.
I wonderhow one would say that in Latin.

Congrats on the delivery of your Fleet from the Builders yards CC! Now get to work shaking them down and working them up and ready in all respects for Operations!
That is a cool story about Admiral Fisher. I shall have to think up somethign equally suitable for when they make ME a peer of the Realm! 
I guess "Nil Illegitumus Carborundum" isnt too appropriate...

You have a couple of basing options for naval ships
1) Mount them on a falt base, add some scupting clay, milliput or whatever to creat bwaves and wake. Paint them blue/gray with some foamy water in the right spots..
or
2) Mount them on clear perspex type material so that the base is fully transparent and not very visible for a distance.
Both approaches look good. Though yu have to craefully match ay base painting you dow ith your dropsheet. And remember that hardly any spots in the sea are "blue"!
