First genre wargame: ?Melee/Wizard ca. 1981 First mini wargame: ?SM2 ca. 1991
Plenty of Car Wars, Battletech and SFB in there, too. | I did not count Melee/Wizard. We used it more as a RPG witht he "Solo" adventures etc.
But if you want to not feel so old, I bought Traveller in it's original run and bought a White Box as part of my first RPG experiances. I remember waiting for the shipment when Wizard was released.
Yes, I am old.

Plenty of Car Wars, Battletech and SFB in there, too. | Comparitively speaking, some of us ARE old. I'm not the oldest one here, but I am one of the OLDER ones. I started playing D&D when I was 14, and that was the same year Jimmy Carter was elected president!

Whoops missed this one!
I think I got into wargaming via two routes. I started building model ships and planes when I was about 6 or 7 years old. The moddeling part of the hobby has always been the largest fascination for me. I think I must have been arround 8 years old when I got Hero Quest and Space Crusade. (Those really were great games - I can't believe the prices they fetch on Ebay these days! I wish I still had mine...)
Then I saw my cousin playing Adeptus Titanicus and I was hooked. It only became better when I saw that he got little 6 mm versions of my Space Crusade Androids and Dreadnoughts. It was still a couple of years before I knew enough english to learn the rules properly though. The rest, as they say, is history
Cheers!

I built Airfix kits from when I was about 7- then I saw 40k models a few years later for the first time and fell in love! I picked up copies of Heroquest and Space Crusade from car boots for a few pounds each and we played them to death- true classics of the minature gaming worlds!
Then came 40k, Fantasy, collecting old WDs and eventually BFG and then Epic, happy days.

Bane... bane! A pox on you!
Never mention Jimmy Carter's name here AGAIN!
Shalom, Maksim-Smelchak. | Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter.
Hahahahahahaha
Sorry Maksim, I am feeling devilish today.

Based on your profile I am a few months younger.

Okay, I dont' feel quite so old now. I was old enough to talk about Jimmy Carter's [apologies to Maksim] election campaign, but I wasn't in high school yet.
For the way-back machine on general game purchases, I also played the first release of Traveler and bought the very first D&D basic set (before the "red box") and passed up buying Eldritch Wizardry and Blackmoor when you could still find them on the bookshelves.

Overall, I'd say this group qualifies as a true collection of uber-geeks.

Quote (Markconz @ 20 2005 June,14:27) | Seeing the blue and red titans moving aroud those polystyrene buildings is a vivid memory for me, as is seeing space hulk for the first time... also the first 15mm Napoleonics game with lots of players and 1000's of figures. | I went to a GenCon just before I got married. Wanted to say I had been to one. I remember going into the stadium where they had all those "rooms" set up for the Role Players. They were just curtins hung up. I went up to the top of the seats and could look down into the "rooms" and see people playing. I was overcome with the thought "These are my people". Too funny.
Well, that is how I feel here too. We are all cut from the same cloth as they say.
