Hey everyone,
just getting into Epic. Played a few games around 12/18 months ago with Eldar, but now ive just purchased a job lot of Marines, so am looking to put a force on the battlefield. One thing im curious about is Warhounds. Pretty much every list on the Epic UK site has 2 Warhounds in there. Not all, but the majority, even my first list has too (ive attached it below). Im wondering if Marines can be competitive without Warhounds, or are they simply that good and offer something the rest of the Marine list doesnt that means they should be an automatic choice?
My list has a pair in too, partly because i like the models, partly because every other list does too! My list below.
TACTICAL [500] 6 Tactial units plus Transport, Supreme Commander, Hunter, Razorback LAS
TERMINATOR [400] 4 Terminator units, Chaplain
ASSAULT [175] 4 Assault units
ASSAULT [175] 4 Assault units
BIKE [200] 4 Bikes, Attack Bikes
SCOUT [150] 4 Scouts plus Transport
LAND SPEEDER [200] 5 Land Speeder
THUNDERHAWK [200] 1 Thunderhawk gunship
WHIRLWIND [300] 4 Whirlwinds
THUNDERBOLTS [150] 2 Thunderbolt Fighters
WARHOUND TITAN [275] 1 Warhound Titan
WARHOUND TITAN [275] 1 Warhound Titan

SM can be competitive without warhounds but are easier to use and better with warhounds. If anything steel legion are more dependent on warhounds to be competitive

Warhounds are there to deal with enemy War Engines and even Titans. Marines are about "Shock and Awe" and not much aside from a Scout Titan really shocks the average War Engine.

Hi forum, please support me. I am not able to decide which solution is better. A pair of Warhounds for 500. Or two individual units for 275 each. I am scared that an individual Warhounds will not survive long time against an enemy army with long range titan killer or big units with good AT weapons (like Leman Russ tank platoon). Regards, Fred

2 seperate is always better.
Mainly because the titans don't get suppressed and it forces your opponent to have to maeuver and target 2 seperate fms.
Additionally you have 1 extra activation and can yourself target your warhounds at 2 seperate targets as well as contest/capture 2 different objectives.
War hounds are a very survivable unit and also very maneuverable. Much more so than a Leman Russ tank company or a shadowsword. If you send your WHs straight down the barrels of these units, yeah they won't last long but you can use your speed to your advantage and try and stay out of the firing line. Also, if youir opponent is using a full SH (500+ pts) or LR tank company (650+ pts) after your 275pt Warhounds then that leaves the rest of your army relatively unmolested to pick his army apart with.
