Is it generally better to do the drop deep in enemy territory where both the bombardment and deathwind will do damage and then only the dropped forces will support each other, or drop the pods further back in the center of the board (say, near an objective), give up doing much with the deathwind attack, but be close enough to the deployment zone that other SM forces can rush up to give stronger support the dropped units?
Depends on the enemy.
For something like an on-board Eldar force, with small formations, a successful drop of 3 Deathwinds can cripple the army, and since they can't garrison, they have narrowed choices on how to hide. Or for a horde army with few garrisons, like Speed Freeks, they may fill so much of the deployment zone that you can pound a flank with Deathwinds and not be hugely worried about mass counter attack (at least not before you can do some maneuver as well).
OTOH, a reserves-heavy Eldar or SM force, or an IG force with lots of garrisons, will be hard to accurately target and will be able to counterattack in force if you miss. That would require a more defensive drop style.
