Here’s the start of a write up for the games I played in with the Salamanders. None of the games used the tournament scenario and all were more than two player. None of the games used equal points or standard objectives, this meant that most the scenarios were ‘uneven’ in favour of one side or another.

Game 1: Battle of Hemlock River

Despite taking heavy losses from planetary defences, ork drop rok forces had been able to wipe out local defenders along the river Hemlock and begin establishing a base of operations. Space marines from the Salamanders and Flesh Tearers chapters were to conduct co-ordinated air and orbital attacks on the pocket of orks, to destroy them before they could fully consolidate their position …

Table: standard table with a broad river flowing length ways, surrounded by an ork shanty town. 2 (3k) attacking marine players vs. 1 (4–5k?) ork defender. 6 objective markers, mostly in buildings, the imperials won if they controlled 4 of the objectives.

Orks deployed first. Marine lists had to be air assault and drop pod heavy (no spaceships allowed, pod formations landed individually), no teleports allowed, no ork landas allowed.

The ork army set up around the central bridge, their force included a great gargant, two stompa mobs, lots of skorchas, and two battlefortress mobs.

Marines had 4 drop pod formations and 4–5 air assault formations, with scouts, speeders and one predator formation starting on table.

Deployment

The marines concentrated initially on drawing ork forces away from the centre of the table and reducing flack. Flesh Tearers landed via drop pod and landing craft by a wood on outskirts of the buildings, drawing out a lot of ork attention and taking heavy casualties in the struggle to hold a nearby objective. On the far bank marine predator and land speeder formations also took heavy losses, but drew ork forces away from the objectives.

Flesh Tearers land on the outskirts before facing fierce counter attacks

As the orks began to spread out the marines committed more assets to targets and objectives in the centre of the board. Flesh Tearer terminators arrived to rip an objective from the gunz mob, while Salamanders drop podded in to secure objectives on both sides of the south of the river.

Flesh Tearer terminators secure a second objective (skull die) for the marines

With at least 4 objectives secure the Salamanders started picking off straggler formations and ZoCd the great gargant.

Salamanders take out a battlefortress mob which had moved out to attack the predators in turn 1.

By the end of turn 2 the orks were down to the supa stompa mob and great gargant as their only effective formations, neither of them being on objectives. Game called as an imperial victory.

Game 2: Deadland Gargant Yards

Vanaheim air cavalry, Angels of Redemption, and Salamanders combine forces to attack a gargant construction yard.

Table: extended by 50% length ways. Extensive ork town and factory complex covering the whole board except for ~20cm or so around the edges. 3 attacking imperial players vs. 3 defending ork players. Objectives were the destruction/protection of 3 gargant factories, 6DC 4+RA fearless WE, 5+ FF/CC.
In addition to the factory objectives the table also contained a number of gargants and great gargatns under construction. Each gargant was to roll at the start of each turn to see if it came online, if it did a further roll would determine which systems were operational.

Orks deployed first. Marine lists had to be air assault and drop pod heavy (no spaceships allowed, pod formations landed individually), no teleports allowed. Orks were not allowed flyers in their lists, but 4–5 waves of fightas arrived as reinforcements during the battle.

The ork army set up in the town/factory. With ork 3 players on 1.5 tables worth of space deployment was extremely crowded. The orks deployed to try to ensure their was no clear ZoC spaces for drop pods to land in near the factories

Marines had 5 drop pod formations, 3 landing craft, and 8? Thunderhakws. The Vanaheim army deployed en masse, mostly along one narrow table edge.

The Vanaheim opened the game with rocket and missile attacks on ork forces on the airfield next to the first factory. Amid taunts of cowardice from the Ork players, the Imperial spent the first 1/3 of the game trying tentatively to pick off flack and create some holes in the ork ZoC blob. Some minor engagements, a number of ork formations went on overwatch.

With the airfield cleared, Angels and Salamander thunderhawks slammed terminator formations into the first factory complex. The factory quickly crumbled, but the defenders managed to pick off a few squads of terminators.

Devastators from both chapters managed to pod into a small ZOC gap near the next two factories, only to get stomped on by the surrounding orks.

The Angels’ committed more thunderhakws to the second factory. One set of terminators bounced right off, repulsed by factory grotz, but it wasn’t long before the factory was ablaze.

With their terminators spent and some landing zones opened up, the marines began to deploy their landing craft. The first set down in a narrow alleyway next to the final factory. After doing some damage to the building the marines were wiped out by counter attacks. Ork air cover began to increase, but too little too late as another two landing craft disgorged devastators to shoot the factory.

With even more ork fightas patrolling the area the last formation of Vanaheim vultures delivered a long range killing blow to the factory with their missiles. Image
The ~3 hour game didn’t reach the end of turn 1 (2 thunderhawks hadn’t even activated) and the factories were destroyed before any gargants could awaken. All agreed the scenario was very much in favour of the imperials, but it was a fun and crowded battle nonetheless.

So, while getting my camera ready for the GT, I came across over a hundred photos from the Campaign Weekend in Sept that I never got around posting...

Bit out of date now maybe, but figured I'd throw them up here anyway...
