Ok, took the Gargants out for another match yesterday. I wanted to try the dual-Great gargant build again and see if it is a broken build.

My opponent was partisan_nick. And since he likes to win so much he tailored a list for my gargants

Setup:

Objective placement was done like last time i took this build, 30cm apart just next to the midline. The idea is to put 1 great gargant there and camp on them while the other (BTS) guards the blitz.

Partisan_nick set up his objectives on my left side to stay out of the gargants way.

I set up both Great Gargants on my right side close to the objectives. The stomp mob garrisoned in the center behind the cathedral and the lootas started in the middle close to the houses.

Nick spread out his force covering mot of the table.

TURN 1: Gargants win Initiative.

G: Fighta-Bommers ground attack hydras. 2 are shot down by hydra flak and the last one does 1BM.
G: Fighta-Bommers ground attack deathstrikes. 1 is shot down by hydras. 1 deathstrike is destroyed and the formation breaks.
SL: Vultures advance forward and fires on great gargant stripping 4 shields (1BM).
G: BTS-Great Gargant goes on OW.
SL: manticores sustains on stompa mob killing 1 (5BM).

G: BTS-Great Gargant doubles forward and fires on Inf Co in forest killing 2 stands (3BM).

TURN 3: Gargants win initiative.

G: Great Gargant engages reg hq and kills 6 stands and 3 chimeras for the loss of 2DC. The gargant wins the combat and 3 more stands (including the SC) are killed in hackdowns (2BM).
G: BTS-Great Gargant retains and doubles forward to contest both T&H objectives. It fires on rough riders killing 5 and breaks the formation.
SL: Mech Co holds and advances forward.
G: Fighta-Bommers ground attacks mech co killing 1 chimera and 1 stand (3BM).
SL: thunderbolts ground attacks lootas killing 1 grot and 1 boyz (2BM).
G: stompa Mob doubles forward and fires on Mech Co killing 1 stand (2BM).
G: lootas retain and engages mech co. the score is 2-2 in kills (well 3-2 to mech co but 1 casualty is a grotz stand) but steel legion wins the roll off and the lootas breaks.

1-0 to Steel Legion (T&H) so it should have gone to a 4th turn. But my kids had to go to sleep so we decided to count points. Had it gone to a fourth turn SL would have taken my blitz and i could possible have finished off the Reg HQ with alot of luck claiming the BTS objective.

So i would have either have lost by 2-0 or 2-1 or points.

Steel legions wins by points 1510-800.

My thoughts:

Well, against this list it wasn't so easy to play for points win in turn 4 as i planned. But this list was more tailored towards dealing with gargants so it might not show how a generic IG list would deal with this kind of Gargant build.

The big thing for me is that this kind of build is pretty boring to play with. I would rather play with 3-4 gargants instead.

I*m still confident that a point reduction with 50p for Megsa Gargants and 25p for Great gargants and gargants is valid. Maybee even lower it more in the future but i'll rather move slowly.

Looks like a painful game. Did Nick know he was facing the big mob list before he made his steel legion? The steel legion doesn't seem completely tailored seems very similar to what on of my opponents plays as a standard list (except the death strikes) and I rarely field war engine heavy lists. I agree with your assessments. Very similar to what I have experienced.

I was just looking over the list and marvelling at how many firefight attacks you could give a gargant with the more dakka upgrade and the snapper(s). I see you went that way with the BTS-Great Gargant. Did you attempt to get it into supporting fire position?

I might have possibly made two lists depending on if I where to face death guard or Gargants though...

But a really tailored list would have included bombers and the Russ co too. ;-)

On a more serious note I did not get off a single death strike but I could take out one of the Great Gargants and pick apart the rest of the list anyway. I think it shows that they are not impossible to kill, though without the Shadowswords it would probably have been a different story (even if we forgot the crits in one of the turns). The Greats are truly vicious in a FF but I really don´t think the Gargant list is very competative anyway. Next time I could run my standard SL list or the new DKOK (could they win a fire fight with a Great Gargant? - they kind of have to, they cant do much else!)

Nope, the plan was to hang back and guard the Blitz thus denying both the Blitz and BTS objective. Moving the BTS-gargant to far up would have left the blitz unguarded.

Wasn't worried about assaults to be honest. The guard destroyed the gargant in the only way they could. Massive amounts of shooting.

Great battle report gents!

Just a quick question. I assume you guys were using commissars in the SL list? On turn 3 the great gargant hacked down the supreme commander. Was the commissar on the supreme commanders stand? Or just part of the formation? If it was on the stand the SC wouldn't of been hacked down due to the commissars fearless status.

Also partisan nick:(could they win a fire fight with a Great Gargant? - they kind of have to, they cant do much else!)

Oh I don't know death strikes, shadowswords, other titans...
