Turn 2


The Trygons surface.


The Lictors teleport in.


The Lictors engage the scout screen.


Two Sentinels and a Lictor go down.


Support take the rest of the Lictors down and the Sentinels break. The Exocrines take out 4 Chimera.


The Basilisks take out a Trygon DC and lay some BMs on the other formations.


The infantry in the woods attempts to go on overwatch, fails and regorups.


The Trygons attempt to engage, fail and break.


The HQ goes on overwatch.


The Mechanized company marshalls.


The Biovores attempt to sustain, fail and regorup.


The infantry remain on overwatch.


A Mycetic Swarm touches down and engages the Sentinels.


Two go down and the rest are hacked down.

The BTS engages the HQ.


All but 3 Infantry and the Commissar are killed or hacked down.


The Biovores put a BM on the HQ. The Infantry goes on Overwatch.


The Exocrine advances and take out four Basilisks, breaking them.


The Tbolts straffe the swarm in cover, taking out a Brood.


The Swarm marshalls and respawns the loss.


The Tbolts staffe the Trygons and take out a DC.


The Trygons marshall to controll and objective.


The HQ engages after a fail.


After a bloody battle the BTS is broken but intact, and the HQ consolodates.


A swarm comes in and doubles, fencing the Guard onto their half.


The Sentinels fail to march and break.


A swarm grabs DTF.

Quick typo note: it was the regular mech coy. that was engaged by the 'nid bts and lost, not the HQ

The HQ should've gone after the small swarm instead of the BTS, but I guess I was dazzled by the VC and had a brain fart. Oh well. It's quite tough when the IG lose strategy to the tyranids two out of three turns...

I wonder how Matt would have fared if he'd doubled or marched his mech co.s over to the nid blitz and done a holding acting with what was left in his half. I can't help but feel that he gave the game away putting so much stuff on overwatch and playing relatively statically.

He could have gotten away with a march first turn (no spores came in) but would have been looking at fighting off 2 swarms and a BTS on the second turn. We've definitely seen games where a ballsy 'nid opponent get's punished for overextending themselves and leaving a formation unsupported and on its own. There's definitely a balance that needs to be found, especially with the other side of the spectrum being demonstrated here, ie: the opponent gets penned in on their half of the board.

I guess that those are the kind of choices you face when up against a dropping army. In fact, the randomness of the drop seems to make it even harder - it's not like you're definitely going to get hammered on the first or the second turn like you would against SM for example. I understand why he put (or tried to) so many fms on overwatch, I just find that you almost give away the game if you start doing that, especially against an opponent that doesn't receive BMs for brood casualties. Sorry Matt, not trying to rubbish your generalship, plus playing back seat armchair devils advocate general
