Alright, here is our game from last night. I fielded the Raven Guard while captPiett (Matt) took an Infantry Heavy Steel Legion list. Matt setup the terrain and I chose corner deployment. He garrisoned a lot of infantry (something I didn't consider when planning my drops) so my plan became take the Blitz and go for BTS as I didn't want get caught between the garrisons and regular deployments for too long.

Turn 1
Initiative: Raven Guard

Start of Game Deployment


IG Deployment


The Strike Cruiser's barrage hits something. 2 Valkyries and 5 Storm Troopers go down.


The Supreme Commander drops right between the Hydra (destroying two and breaking them) and the Rough Riders (placing a BM).


The Tacticals lands and hacks down another Storm Trooper, and lays BMs on the Vultures and Sentinels.

The Terminators land and take out the Guard Commander, and lay a BM on the Rough Riders.


Land Speeder 1 touches down, re-rolls their scatter and ZoCs the Manticores.


Land Speeder 2 touches down in an attempt to ZoC the Supreme Commander, they fail even with their scatter re-roll and are way off target.

Raven Guard Drop Deployment


An Infantry company uses their Overwatch and takes out two Terminators with four hits.


A second Infantry Company uses their Overwatch on the Tacticals, taking out two stands.


The Raven Guard SC engages the commanderless Infantry company.


The IG break while the SC take a single casualty. The broken Hydra is destroyed and the Manticores take a BM.

The Rough Riders engage the intermingled Terminators and Raven Guard SC.


After two rounds of comabat the Rough Riders are destroyed, the Terminators broken, and the SC has lost another two stands.


The Manticores move out of ZoC of Land Speeder 1 and direct fire at them, taking out two.


The Tactical sustain on the Vultures, destroying one and breaking them.


Land Speeder two advances and fires on the IG Supreme Commander, laying a BM.

The Supreme Commanders clash in an engagement.


The Raven Guard SC is hacked down while the IG Supreme Commander takes a siingle loss.


Land Speeder 1 Marshals, fires on the Manticores and breaks them, and sheds 3 BMs.


The Sentinels attempt to double but fail.


The Whirlwinds drop some hurt on one of the garisonned Infantry companies.

The Predators march to the aide of the dropped Marines.


The Assault Marines air assault the broken Infantry company.

This was my favorite assault of the whole game. The Assault Marines couldn't get into BtB with but one IG but still managed 3 kills, 3 saves, and were completely set to go for the turn 2 assault on the Regimental HQ.



The IG are utterly wiped out.


End of Turn 1
The Terminators and Storm Troopers rally. The Vultures and Manticores fail to rally.

The Predators advance and rip apart five Chimera. Land Speeder 2 retains, advances and takes down 5 infantry out in the open.


The Storm Troopers attempt to advance on the Assault Marines, fail and lay a BM on the Tacticals.


The Assault Marines engage the SC.


Two Assault Marines go down but the SC is broken.

An Infantry company engages the Terminators.


The Dreadnought is hacked down and the Terminators fall back.


The Sentinels catch the Tactical marines in the open in a cross fire, taking a stand down.


The Thunderhawk makes a strafing run on the Storm Troopers and takes all but one Valkyrie out.


An Infantry company sustains on the Tacticals, taking down one stand and breaking them.

The Manticores fail to rally and can't get past the Speeders ZoC, they are destroyed. The Supreme Commander and Terminators fail to rally. The Tacticals rally.

Land Speeder 1 advances and destroys the SC and Chimera for BTS.


An Infantry company attempts to double and take out the Terminators but fails.


Land Speeder 2 doubles and breaks the lone Valkyrie.


End of Game
At this point we called it, the Raven Guard had Blitz and BTS and the Steel Legion was out of activations.

After Battle Thoughts and Questions

How are Planetfalling Land Speeders handled? I plot one point for each formation of them, and then do I move that point up to 15cm, scatter it 2d6cm and place one speeder on that point and all the others in coherency? Or do I scatter each of the speeders in the unit? Something else? We're going to need a clarifying note here. Although the language in Planetfall should really be re-worked to incorporate formations of units with Planetfall, not just units with Planetfall.

What I did in game was the first thing I listed, except I kept all speeders within 15cm of the drop point (I pretty much deployed them as per the Drop Pod rules). I think this is pretty fair, and helps with the Planetfalling Scouts problem, which is why Scouts can't use Drop Pods anymore, right?

My Terminators didn't amount to much, but that was due to poor rolling (I rolled more 2s with these guys...) then having them Drop Pod in.

The 3 Tornado 2 Typhoon formation were fun, the 45cm range shots helped a couple of times. Mostly they found themselves shooting the Regimental HQ to pieces.

I'll test some more lists like this for awhile, then start incorporating RG Assault and Heavy Scouts.

It think Scouts were more about the "deathwind barrage," but the ZoC issues were there, too.

Cool.  I'm definitely going to give it a try.

The Manticores fail to rally and can't get past the Speeders ZoC, they are destroyed.

It's hard to tell from the pics, but how can 2x20cm move not get them out of those ZoCs?  The ZoC only extends 10cm from the Speeders and the speeders aren't that far apart.  Just one 20cm move should have gotten them most of the way across the entire coverage.  Using the infantry stand as a measuring unit, it looks like 40cm total move should have taken them out of that pic.

Are they allowed to ignore the Speeders ZoC when broken?
