Here's round two of DS's Knights vs my Phase III 'nids. If I can find my notes I'll see about putting round 1 up. It was from a month or two agao.

I'll save my comments for the end, however it's worth noting that 6 strong Knight formations are damn hard in assaults :-P though.

Pictures are here:

Knights Initial Deployment:

Tyranids Initial Deployment:

Seneschal von Supreme, acting commander of his highness Baron von Supreme's northerly forces, ordered his Paladins forward into the advancing Tyranid hordes. His verdant home world had come under siege from the vicious aliens not but 12 hours before and his father and sent him out to secure the northern provinces. His knights screamed in defiance as the shot apart the Genestealers forwarding their way across the river (1 down).

Their shouts of vengeance turned to those of horror as the sky turned dark with the arrival of the Mycetic Spores launched from a Hiveship in their planets upper atmosphere. Seconds before the spores made planetfall explosions rippled across the Knights line, claiming the lives of Aspirants (1) and damaging one of the venerable Warden Knights (1DC) while a 5 meter spike embedded itself in the chassis of another Warden (1DC from pin-point).

Further screams washed over the vox as the spores hit ground zero washing his Knights in acid and Emperor knows what else. He saw a further group of Aspirants dissolve in the putrid bile while their fellows withdrew in good order reforming their battle line (broken). The Wardens seemed beleaguered as well from the initial bombardment (broken) but von Supreme was proud to see that the rest of his Knights and the mighty Mourning Star Reaver Titan were holding firm.

Assault Swarms 1 and 2 Planetfall:

Assault Swarms 3 and 4 Planetfall:

One of the swarms was already engaging a group of Errants and their Lancer trainers when the rest of the dust settled.  The Seneschal watched as the Shock Lances of the Knights fired as they counter-charged the Tyranids taking several of the leaping ones down (2 Hormagaunts). As the Tyranids closed on the Knights however von Supreme screamed in anger as the three Lancers were cut down by the remaining hordes as they stomped and shot at the scuttling aliens with the aid of the Errants (4 Termagants 2 Hormagaunts). Despite the loss of his veteran Knights the Seneschal was pleased to see the young Knight Errants drive off the rest of the Tyranids to the forest (12-13 1 Hormagaunt hack down) before with drawing away from the other hordes in good order (Errants broken).

Assault Swarm 1 Engages Errants and Lancers, both break and withdraw:

From his vantage on top of the hill the Seneschal watched as the Castellans and Reaver (retain) ripped into the center of the advancing hordes. Planting their feat firmly in the hill they stood upon the Castellans blasted a massive amount of hunter-killers to atoms with their Quake Cannons (6 Termagants and 1 Warrior) while the Morning Star Reaver turned its Gattling Blasters on the horde advancing on the reforming Aspirants cutting troughs through the swarm (3 Termagants 1 Hormagaunt).

Assault Swarm 3 Engages the second group of Errants and Lancers:

The horde ravaged by the Castellans seem uncaring of their plight however as they continued past them and through themselves into the flank of the second grounp of Errants and Lancers. Again the Knights Shock Lances popped many of the leaping Tyranids in mid air as they ran to the front of the pack (4 Hormagaunts). One Errant fell as its fellows and the Lancers dispatched with the rest of the Tyranids and reformed to continue their charge on the Tyranid's right flank.

Assault Swarm 3 is wiped out:

The Lancers and Errants engage Assault Swarm 4:

Seneschal von Supreme heard the distinct high pitch whine followed by a pop as the Shock Lances of the Lancers and remaining Errants fired at the on coming swarm (2 Hormagaunts 1 Termagant). Another Errant fell in the ensuing combat but not before overloading his plasma reactor and taking more of the vile aliens with him (4 Hormagaunts 3 Termagants). The last Errant and Lancers chased the fleeing swarm into the woods mowing down a few more hunter-killers in doing so (16-8, 2 Termagants hacked down).

Assault Swarm 2 Engages the Aspirants:

Meanwhile the swarm on the Tyranid's left flank continued its headlong charge at the reforming Aspirants despite the casualties inflicted by the Reaver. The young men fault valiantly, taking many aliens down with them before the overwhelming number of the Tyranid Swarm crushed them beneath a sea of claws and fangs (5 Hormagaunts, and the last 4 Aspirants fall).

Returning his gaze to the approaching hordes von Supreme smiled grimly as he saw huge hulking figures rushing in his direction followed by scores of blindingly quick Genestealers (Genestealers and Attack Swarm march towards Paladins).

End Turn

Wardens - fail to rally
Errants - rally with 1 BM left
Lancers and Errant - rally with 2 BM left

Assault Swarm 1 - rally with 1 BM left
Assault Swarm 2 - spawns 4 Hormagaunts
Assault Swarm 4 - rally with 1 BM left
Attack Swarm - spawns 5 Hormgaunts
Harassment Swarm - spawns 5 Termagants
Genestealer Swarm 1 - rally with 1 BM

Knights Start of Turn 2:

Tranids Start of Turn 2:

Tyrant and Genestealers engage the Paladins:

The kid fought hard, he had to give him that. Princeps Dwarfen sat in his command throne of the Squaticus Maximus, the venerable Morning Star Reaver, absorbing the video feed of the von Supreme sire battle the combined Genestealer and Tyranid Swarms. His Paladins and he and completely annihilated the Genestealers and Hormagaunts while only one of their number was hacked apart by a Carnifex that had managed to get into close quarters. Now the young Seneschal was pushing the Hive Tyrant back with the slow advance of his Paladins (7-14 Knights, Hive Tyrant combined engage with 2 Genestealer Swarms, 5 Hormagaunts lost in first strike, 3 Genestealers in assault, and 7 Genestealers hacked down). Dwarfen supposed if it was his home world, he'd fight like hell too to protect it from these...

Paladins wipe the floor with the Genestealers:

Assault Swarm 2 engages the Errants:

The Princeps attention snapped back to the feed coming from his weapons Moderati. These damn things just wouldn't die. He had blown holes in one of the swarms just seconds before they gutted a group of Aspirants before flooding into a communication bunker at the base of the hill. His Moderati was informing him that they were now exiting the bunker and rushing headlong towards the group of Wardens that had fallen back to behind the hill for cover. He ignored the Moderati, the stupid old men in their preposterous machines were on their own. He was after the Tyrant. He cut the vox feed from the Wardens so we wouldn't be bothered by their death screams. He was mildly surprised however when he absorbed a video feed of a group of Tyranid Warriors retreating past the bunker and to the woods beyond (4 Hormagaunts and 3 Termagants to 2 Wardens, 9-13 Knights with all but the three Warriors being hacked down).

The Errants finish up Assault Swarm 2:

The remaining Errants on the right flank of the Knights line made quick work of the remaining Warriors, loosing one of their number to the vicious Venom Cannons that the Warriors carried.

Assault Swarm 1 bides its time:

A quick glance at his motion tracking feed told him the swarm which the Lancers on the Knight's left flank had gutted was moving further into the woods.  "Good" he thought, "One less thing to worry about right now..."

His Moderati finally reported that the Tyrant had made its way out into the open and with relish he activated the Squaticus Maximus's dual Gattling Blasters. No amount of swearing though could appease the Princeps though when he saw that only a Zoanthrope had been downed by his god-machine's mighty weapons.

He fumed as the Gattling Blasters reloaded and a group of Warriors and their broodlings moved to intercept the von Supreme's charge on the Tyrant.  This was going to be...

Explosions covered the Tyrant and the approaching Warrior swarm.  "Castellan's redirect your fire! The Tyrant is mine!" the Princeps screamed into the Vox. "Apologies Princeps but Seneschal von Supreme ordered us to fire on the converging swarms (1 Zoanthrope, 2 Termagants and 1 Hormagaunt).

The Princeps already wasn't listening as he watched the feed of the Seneschal crash into the two swarms in an effort to take his kill. Any bitterness was completely lost when he saw that the Paladins and the Seneschal were cut to pieces by the Warriors and the Tyrant's Swarm (3 Paladins including Seneschal and 1 Carnifex, rest of Paladins hacked down).

"No matter," he thought "these stupid things still aren't going to get any closer to the capitol with the Squaticus Maximus here". Seizing command the Princeps ordered Lancers and remaining Errant forward to secure their primary objective (march to Blitzkrieg).

The Harridan, which had been sulking behind the forests on their left flank, drifted towards him. "Your next..." thought the Prnceps.

End Turn

Wardens -  rally with 1 BM
Errants - rally with 1 BM left
Lancers and Errant - rally with 1 BM left

Assault Swarm 1 - rally with 1 BM left
Assault Swarm 4 - spawns 6 Hormgaunts
Attack Swarm - rally with 1 BM left
Harassment Swarm - spawns 3 Termagants

Tyranids Start of Turn 2:

Knights Start of Turn 2:

He watched as the remaining Warriors and the Tyrant (retain) continued their full on retreat (march towards Tyranid blitzkrieg). His moderati had just informed him that the reload was complete when the Tyrant erupted in a fiery inferno (whole formation gone). "EMPEROR DAMN THEM!" he roared as he turned to see the Castellans lower their smoking Quake Cannons and trudge off towards a secondary objective.

Irratated beyond measure by the gaul of these backwater bumkins the Princeps turned his machine's gaze back towards the Harridan. He let out a sigh of anguish when he saw that the beast was already drifting off after the Lancers and well out of range (march towards Tyranid Blitzkrieg).

The Lancers engage and wipe out Assault Swarm 1:

Realizing that he'd never get close enough to the thing before the Lancers laid to waste he resigned himself that there would be plenty more to kill before this planet was free from their invasion. He ordered the remained Errants towards a secondary objective (march) and absorbed the motion tracking field as the Lancers romped through the woods to seek out and destroy the remaining Tyranid Warrios that fled with the Tyrant (wiped the warriors out in an assault).

He turned his attention back to the swarm still lurking in the woods and entertained himself with a few pot shots on the Hormagaunts leaping through the trees (1 Hormagaunt) and watched and they fled deeper into the woods away from his god-machine's wrath (march).

End Turn

Wardens -  rally with 0 BM
Errants - rally with 0 BM left
Lancers and Errant - fail with 1 BM left

Assault Swarm 4 - spawns 3 Termagants
Harassment Swarm - spawns 2 Hormgaunts

Start of Turn 4:

The Princeps continued to amuse himself with shooting the Tyranids in the woods (1 Hormgaunt 1 Termagant) while he sent the Knights off to secure their objectives (Errants, Castellans and Warden march to objectives for Take and Hold).

The Harridan and Lancers square up:

He was mildly amused when the Lancers and Errant managed to wound the Harridan and watched as the thing dived out of the sky and ripped the young Errant apart before retreating further to the north (1 Harridan DC and 2 Gargoyles to 1 Errant, Tyranids loose).

The goggles do nothing!:

The Harridan falls back, beaten:

"All and all not a bad battle" he thought.  "A little heavy in terms of casualties but no matter." He was sure he was going to catch crap from the Baron though about the death of his son.  He really couldn't wait until this bloody invasion was over and he could make his way to a proper war theater...

Tyranids End of Game:

Knights End of Game:

End result was DS winning it 3-0 in the 4th with Take And Hold, Blitzkrieg and Break Their Spirit.

The narrative story took a longer longer than expected, I'm going to leave my thoughts to tomorrow. All the pictures are here:

Enjoy.

Thoughts on the Knights.

They are definitely tough formations to break when there's six of them.

I still feel the Lancers and Errants move way to fast but my thoughts on that are on the main Knight thread:

http://www.tacticalwargames.net/cgi-bin....2;st=60

Not sure what I can say about the 'nids that I haven't said before. The more I play it though the more I find the Phase III list to be just a very big flash in the pan. Lots and lots of brood creatures die in the first turn (as they should) and usually by the end of the third turn, or the fourth there's very few formations on the table.

Wow Dave, you posted the BatRep much sooner than I expected. I like the narrative, too. I'm glad I finally ended my losing streak.

My army list was:

1 Paladin detachment with 3 Paladins upgrade and Seneschal upgrade
2 Errant detachments, each with 3 Lancers upgrade
1 Warden House detachment
I Castellan detachment
1 Aspirant Detachment
1 Reaver with 2 Gatling Blasters and 1 Laser Blaster and Legate upgrade

This was my (our) second game with the Knight list and I'm still trying out different combinations. After only two games, though, I've come to the conclusion that it's worth sacrificing an activation to take one detachment of 6 Knights, rather than two detachments of 3 Knights. Six Knights are fairly resilient and can be brutal in CC.

Although the Reaver didn't do all that much this game, it did serve as a good deterrent for Dave trying to take the Blitzkrieg objective, especially since it was armed with a CC weapon that added four extra attacks. Plus, now that Reavers can have a Supreme Commander, I was pretty much assured that I wouldn't lose him.

Dave and I talked about this again on Saturday. If you go by old stats (SM2/TL), Errants and Lancers are too fast right now. I can see Lancers being faster than Paladins, but 10 cm faster? Also, Errants probably should be the same speed as Paladins.
