3K marines Vs tanith

Well Fluffy and myself got in another gameof Epic today.

This Time Marines Vs Tanith at 3000pts. ?The elite of the Imperium Vs the luckiest regiemt alive (I am so glad I don't collect Lamentors).

I had
sky Lords
Terminators with supreme commander BTS (teleporting)
Marauder bombers
Thundebolts
Thunderhawk
assault formation with captain (in Thunderhawk)
assault formartion with chaplin (in thunderhawk)
Tactica formation with laser back and hunter
Tactical formation with laser back
Devastators
Whirlwind
Land speeders

Fluufy had (and fluufy correct me if I am wrong)
Tanith infantry company with Gaunt, snipers and heavy weapons teams
Tanith infantry company with snipers, heavy weapons teams and a commissar
Tanith infantry company with snipers and heavy weapons teams
Tanith infantry company
Sniper platoon
Sniper Platoon
Sapper Platton and a commissar
Warhound titan
Minvervan Super heavy tank company with two stormblades and a commissar Banblade BTS
Minervan Salamander scout formation.

Deployment.
I garrisoned the deves off of an objective in the centre (after giving them all red shirts, and the land speeders off og my blitz. ?The two tactical waited in their Rhinos behind cover and the whirlwinds guared the blitz

Fluffy Garrsioned almost all of his infantry off of the two objectivs in his half, with the SHTs held back near his blitz.

the hill near the marine Obj 1 and the marine Blitz were treated as immpassbale to vehicles and WE and dangerous to infantry.

all is right but the commisar in the normal infantry was in the sappers

Turn 1

The marauders are ordered to attack the Tanith occupying the hill.  They however refuse, stating that if the supreme commander is having tea and cake then they shall too.

Seeing an opportunity the Warhound doubles forwards and hides behind the central wood.

Joining in the Salamanders also double forwards to the wood, skidding round the outside they opening fire on the marines sheltering within, killing one squad.

The Whirlwinds then decided to show the fly boys how it is done and open up on the Tanith on the hill.  They blast apart 9 squads breaking the formation.

The broken infantry surge down the hill towards the marines.

Determined to wipe out the wounded enemy tactical one advances round the wood and opens fire at the broken tanith 1, killing one stand due to BMs.

Snipers 1 then march fowards into the central wood, stopping only when they reach spitting distance from the devastators sheltering within.

Tanith 3 then doubles towards the devastators.

Feeling slightly outnumbered the devastators decide to hide, rather than sustain fire at the Salamanders, (failed activation) and place a single BM.

The sappers then double forwards from their shelter and stop just below the rocky climb to Obj 1, recently vacated by Tanith 1.

Gaunt tells his men to march forwards, tells them again, then just mumbles who wants to live forever.  This gets them making a single move forwards (failed activation).

The thunderhawk then makes a staffing run of the broken Tanith 1.  4 twin linked heavy bolters, a battle cannon and the insults shouted from the 40 assault marines onboard result in one dead squad due to BMs

The Land speeders then advance, popping over the wood, and manage to kill three squads from Tanith 1 (2 from BM one form Melta)

Tanith 2 then advances on the speeders placing a single BM.

The SHTs then try to double forwards but can?t seem to get out of first gear (failed activation), so they just make a single move forwards, one of the Stormblades suffers 1DC of Damage as it enters the swamp.

The Thundebolts then show remarkable skills as they swing around behind the SHT and cause 1DC of damage to the commissars Baneblade.

Snipers 2 then march into the runined building near Obj 2.

Tactical 2 then doubles away from Gaunt and fire at the broken Tanith 1, klling one due to BMs.

End Phase
SHTs rally and remove all thee BM (Damn commissar and leader)
The Devastators rally and go down to 2BM
The speeders rally and remove their BM
Gaunt fails to Rally
Tanith 1 fails to rally
Salamanders fail to rally

Turn 2
The Terminators finish their teas and teleport in behind the SHT, the Supreme commander ends up facing the wrong way and suffers a BM for it.



The Whirlwinds sustain fire on the SHTs, trying to even the odds for their brethren of the first company and manage to do 1DC of damage to the already damaged Stormblade

Retaining the Terminators charge and in a fit of idiocy They charge the damaged Storm ?blade and the commissars storm blade.

Defensive fire from the blades hits 5 times and kills two squads of terminators. ?In return the terminators hit 3 times with their powerfist and once with their normal weapons. ?The three MW hits go on the damaged storm blade killing it, whilst the normal hit bounces off of the baneblade.

Shocked by this performance the terminators don?t notice the remaining SHTs changing gear to reverse and run them over (I lost the dice off by 4).

The Sappers then clamber of the hill in an attempt to engage the speeders, one of their members falls to his death, but the others get within FF range. ?Two more squads are wiped out my multimelta fire, but the remaining manage to throw their demo charges at the hovering speeders, bringing two down.

The speeders lose by 1 and fall back to their starting position.

The warhound then advances on tactical 1, Its Vulcan mega bolter misses, but the Plasma blast gun melts two rhinos.

The Marauders finally show up and bomb Gaunt?s formation, killing 8 squads of Ghosts.

Scouts 1 then engage the Devastators in closecombat, wiping out the marines for no lose!

Gaunt then marshals his men, moving them closer to the action and removing 4 BM.

The Thunderhawk then air assaults Tanith 2, the Marines leap out and are careful not to end up within support range of the Warhound.



2 marine squads are lost, but in return they kill all the fire support 2 scouts ?and 4 ghost squads. ?After the roll of the rest of the ghost infantry is wiped out. ?Leaving the officer and two scout squads.

Tactical 2 then sustains fire on the Warhound, stripping it of its shields

The SHTs then advance through the ruined building towards the assault marines, the commissars baneblade loses a DC as the rubble scratches its paint work. ?The Storm blade opens fire on the nearest marine formation wiping out two squads of assault marines, leaving only the captain behind, you flees to the blitz.

Tactical 1 sustains fire on the warhound doing 1DC of damage and breaking the titan, which flees to where it started

Tanith 3 sustains fire on the remaining assault formation felling a single squad of marines.

The thunderbolts do a flyby of the Warhound, and manage to do 1DC of damage to it.

The salamanders advance upon the assault marines and look at them in a menacing way. ?Feeling threterned they ignite their jump packs and fly over to the broken warhound.

Sniper 2 advances upon Tactical2 and place a BM.

End phase
The Chaplin fails to rally.
Tactical 1 rallies and is left with 1 BM.
Tactical 2 rallies and removes its BM.
Speeders rally and have 3BM
Gaunt tries to rally, fails, tries again fails and sulks.
The warhound also fails to rallies
The sHTs rally and remove all BM
The Sappers rally, removing all BM.
The salamanders fail to rally
Tanith1 rallies, 2BM

Turn 3
The Whirlwinds sustains fire at the Tanith hiding in the wood (tanith 3 and sniper 1), killing three from Tanith 3 and 2 from sniper 1.

The Marauders ground attack gaunt killing 3 ghost squads and 1 fire support squad, breaking the formation, allowing it to double forwards.

The Super heavy tanks advance around the building and destroy the assault marine captain, securing the Blitz.

The Sappers fail to do something.

Tactical 1 advances upon the salamanders, killing one, breaking the formation, which flees to the marine base line.

Tanith 1 tries to engage the nearby marines and thinks better of it.

Tactical 2 sustains fire at the members of Tanith 3 not hiding in the wood, killing all 4 of them breaking the formation, which rushes forwards towards Gaunt.

Snipes 2 sustain fire at tactical 2 killing one squad of marines.

The Thunderbolts ground attack the Sappers placing a BM.

The Thunderhawk ground attacks Tanith 1, hitting three times, all hits are saved but the formation breaks and heads back to the hill it started on.

The speeders double upto the sappers, breaking them through shear preasance.  The Sappers run down the hill towards Tanith 1.

At some point Snipers 1 march to join their mates snipers 2 i the ruined building

Rallying
All marines rally.
Salamanders rally, 1 BM left
Sappers rally, with 2BM.
All other ghosts fail to rally.

Turn 4
The Assault marine Chaplin screams ?Who wants to live forever!? and charges the warhound.  The remainder of his formation decided that they do and hang back.  The warhound steps on the Chaplin, but then slips other on the gooey bodies and crashes to the ground.  Seeing their chance the remaining assault marines  sit down and take a well deserved rest.

The Marauders ground attack both sniper 1 and 2, breaking killing 4 from sniper 2 breaking them, but fails to do anything to sniper 1

The salamanders double around the hill and place a single BM on the whirlwind.

The SHT try to advance o the speeder but fail, so they just secure the blitz.

The whirlwind sustains fire on Tanith 1 and the sappers.  Finally wiping out Tanith 1 and breaking the Sappers.

Sniper 1 doubles back into the wood and spreads out so that they now have take and hold.

The thunderhawk comes in and ground attacks sniper 1 killing two of them breaking the formations and stopping them from getting T&H.

Tactical 2 sustaind on Gaunts formation.  They have enough kills and BM kills to wipe out the formation, but Gaunt and the commissar survive (they hid at the back so BM hack down couldn?t get them).

The thunderbolts ground attack the broken sniper 2 and wipe them out.

Tactical 1 sustains fire at the salamanders and wipes them out.

The speeders march to reclaim my own two objectives for defend the flag.

End Phase

All marines Rallies
SHT rallies
Gaunt rallies (denying me they shall not pass)

Ghost win 2-1
BTS, they shall not pass Vs Defend the flag.

Thoughts.
I made several tactical errors in that game.

Firstly by focusing all of my fire on a single broken formation.  I got obseesed with killing it

Secondly was the failed charge by the termies.  I should of thought it through a bit more.  If I did charge them I should of gone for the undamaged ones, though I should of ignored them and teleported the termies into the central wood.

Third mistake was fleeing my broken assault marines to the blitz.  They should of fled away, so that they SHT moved away from it, then marched to take it.

Fourth mistake was charging the broken warhound.  It wasn?t going to do anything, I should of just moved to claim the obkective

Fifth mistake was moving the speeders to get defend the flag.  At this point I had decided to go and try for a Vp draw/win, so the speeders should of stayed in Fluffy?s half of the board.

The SHTs failing their activation in the fourth turn was a blow to me.  They were going to double towards my speeders and that would of left the blitz unguarded for my thunderhawk to land on (and one of my tactical could of marched to get a second objectives).

Thoughts on the tanith.
It seems strange that light infantry get a save when normal infantry don?t, even though it is a cover save there are few ignore cover weapons.

I don?t think that the tanith list should have access to commissars, there are only two of them in the entire regiment, so one on a battlefield seems about right.

Tanith officers should have commander instead of leader.  They were shedding BMs at a rate quicker than I could put them on.

Thoughts on Minervan
Why do the superhavies not have restricted weapons arc?  At one point they were shooting their right side heavy bolters through he body of the tank to shoot my men.

Thoughts on marines
Why are marine characters not fearless?  It is really annoying that commissars can?t be hacked down but a chapter master in terminator armour can.

Unit of the match
Whirlwinds followed by marauders a close second.  This was the perfect enviroemnt for them and they made a mess of the infantry horde.

where can i find the Tanith list? I've just reciently gotten into Epic 40k and i love the Ghosts (i play them in 40k, so playing them in epic sounds right).

Nice battle report by the way and what size table were you guys using?
