This was DS and my game from last Sunday.  It was fun trying out the 'nids against something other than Titans.  The game was a lot closer than some of our previous matches.  The only reason why it ended when it did was because of the Blitz Brigade failing its activation and re-roll.

The Tyranid's took a lot of casualties from assaults against the Orks.  And I'd have to say that spawning looks a lot more balanced in this match then in the ones against the AMTL.

Anyway, onto the report:

Turn 1
Initiative: Dave

Ork Initial Deployment:



Tyranid Initial Deployment:



The Hiveship starts things off with its arrival.  Its orbital bombardment lands squarely on the KoS formation and the Gargant next to it.  Unfortunately for the 'nids, however, only 1 Warbike and a Gargant Power Field go down.  The formations take 3 and 2 BMs respectively.

The Pin-point attack finally does some damage however, and completely wipes the Gunfortress in Big Mob 1 off the face of the desert, giving the formation 4 BMs.

The Attack Swarm makes planetfall right between the Stompa Mob and Big Mob 1, putting a BM on each and taking out one of the Big Mob's Grotz.

Assault Swarm 1 makes planetfall right next to the Attack Swarm taking out a further Grot and 2 Boyz from Big Mob 1 and giving it 2 more BMs. It takes cover behind the hill.



Assault Swarm 2 and 3 hit dirtside on Big Mob 2s left flank, taking out 2 Grotz, 4 Boyz, a Killa Kan and a Gunfortess DC bettwen the two of them and giving the Big Mob 7 BMs.



The Attack Swarm attempt to retain the initiative with an engage against the Stompa mob.  The Carnifex are slow to respond however and the Tyrant has to drive them on with a hive mind thrust (re-roll).



3 Dreadnoughts and 2 Stompas go down but the price is heavy for the Tyranids as the Tyrant is felled by the Stompa along with two Carnifex (one from supporting fire).  The Tyranids win the Assault 13-9, hacking down the remaing stompa, but with no Tyrant to guide them the Carnidex and 3 Zoanthropes go to ground.  The Supa Stompa is broken but does not withdraw.



The Gargant doubles and brings its guns to bear on Assault Swarm 3, taking out 3 Termegants.

The Blitz Brigade retains and doubles as well on Genestealer Swarm 2, taking down 1 of their number.

Assault Swarm 1 engages Big Mob 1 and takes down 1 Grot and 7 Boyz in exchange for 5 Termegants, 4 Hormagaunts and 3 Warriors.  The Orks win 15-20 and the remaining Termegants are scattered.



Assault Swarm 4 attempts to retain with a sustain fire on the Gargant, but fails and simply regroups.

The Stormboyz make ready to engage Genestealer Swarm 2 but think better of it when one of points out all of their sharp pointy claws. They regroup in the buildings they occupy.

The Hive Mind, seeing the results of Assault Swarm 1's assault isn't quick to adapt and throws Assault Swarm 2 into the fray against the other Big Mob supported by Assault Swarm 3.



7 Termegants, and 4 Hormagaunts go down for only 4 Boyz and a Nob.  The Orks kill the remaining Termegant in an 9-18 win.  The three surviving warriors withdraw to the cover of the hill.



The KoS, with supporting fire from the Gargant, engages Assault Swarm 3 and takes down 5 Termegants and a Warrior.  The 'nids counter by taking down 5 of the Warbikes number resulting in an 11-11 draw.  In the second round of combat, the sole remaining hormagaunt in range of the Gargant's support is blown to bitz, but in a 13-14 win for the Tyranids one of the remaining bikes goes down leaving the last Warbike burning at full throtle back towards the Supa Stompa.

The Harridan doubles on the Stormboyz, to lend its wing in the coming assault, and takes out 1 of their number.

The Big Gunz, seeing their chance, attempt to sustain on the Harridan.  But one of the ammo Grotz was neglegent in his duties and returned late. The Harridan only spared the Big Gunz a glance when they shot the tardy Grot at it.

Genestealer Swarm 1 followed in the wark of the Harridan and engaged the bunkered down Stormboyz.



They left none alive.

The Hive Mind finally started to adapt when it issued orders to Assault Swarm 3.  The swarm marched into cover behind the ruins, rather than throw itself at the Big Mob that had already weathered the assault of Assault Swarm 2.

Genestealer Swarm 1, quick to react while the Big Gun crews were still squabbling over ammo, make a quick run across open ground and got into the cover of the hill to assault the Big Gunz next turn.

Tyranid Start of Turn 2:



Ork Start of Turn 2:



Genestealer Swarm 2 engages the Blitz Brigade before they can bring their guns to bear:



3 Gunwagons and 3 Genestealers go down in the resulting battle.  The 'nids win 10-8 however and 2 Gunwagons are hacked down and withdraw.  The broken Genestealers take cover in the buildings.

Genestealer Swarm 1 retains with an engage against the Big Gunz, wiping them out as they continued to argue over ammo requirements and Grot AT values.



The Gargant doubles and rounds the corner of the ruins to fire on Assault Swarm 3, the Supa Gunz are to jostled by the movement however to hit anything and the bugs go unscathed.

Surprising the Orks, Assault Swarm 5 advances on the Gargant instead of sustaining.  They suceed only in giving the Gargant 1 BM.

Big Mob 1 doubles and fires on the Genestealers finishing off the remains of the Big Gun crews.  Unfortunately, all that running kept the Orks from hitting anything and the Genestealers took only 1 BM.

The Harridan advanced on the Big Mob as it fired on the Genestealers and claimed 1 Nob with its Bio-cannons.

Big Mob 2 doubled on Assault Swarm 4 in hopes of taking out a lone Warrior in line of sight.  Again, the Orks failed to hit anything.

The warriors from Assault Swarm 2 sustained fire on the Gargant from the cover of the hills.

Assault Swarm 3 sustained fire on the Gargant rather than engaging, the Hive Mind hoping to break the beast to give its broodlings long enough to accomplish their purpose.  1 more BM to the gargant.

The Gargant continues its advance of Assault Swarm 3, claiming 3 more Hormagaunts.

The Harridan dives out of the sky at Big Mob 1 with Gargoyles and Carnifex in towe.  1 Grot, 3 Boyz and 2 Nobz go down but manage to bring the Harridan down with them.  The Tyranid's win the assault 13-11 and claim a Nob and a Kan as hack downs.  But without the Harridan to guide them they continue to mangled the Orks, letting the sole surviving stand of Orks escape.



Warband 2 sustains on Assault Swarm 4 and manages to take the Warrior in the open down, securing Break Their Spirit for the Ork.  Their virctory was short lived, however, as Genestealer Swarm 1 came crashing into them a moment later.



2 Grotz, 3 Nobz, 4 Boyz, 1 Kan and 1DC of the Gunfortess was the Genestealers tole for 2 of their number.  Only the Gunfortress remained but with a 18-6 win for the Genestealers, it was hacked down as it fled.



The Supa Stompa doubled on the Genestealers now in the open and took out another of their number, breaking them.

Assault Swarm 2 continued its sustained fire on the Gargant from the cover of the hill, one step closer to breaking it.

The Blitz Brigade, in an atempt to contest the objective controlled by the Genestealers attempt to double toward them.  Their engines gave out on them however, as they failed both their initiative test and their re-roll as the Warlord yelled at them to get the lead out.

Assault Swarm 4's Biovores sustained on the Gargant as well, leaving it with 7 BM.

Assault Swarm 3 broke the Gargant and captured the objective it was guarding with an advance order.

Genestealer Swarm 1 marched toward a second Ork objective and secured Take and Hold.

With the Gargant having just rallied the Tyranid's win it 2-1 with Take and Hold and They Shall Not Pass.  The Orks were able to achieve Break Their Spirit by killing 9 Synapse creatures.

Unit(s) of the match for me were the Genestealers.  They haven't performed all that great for me up until this game, but they really shined against the Orks.  They claimed the Big Guns and Stormboyz, along with 6 of the Gunwagonz and the vast majority of Big Mob 2.  Well worth their points.

Looking back through the notes: 3 Carnifex, 3 Zoanthropes, 24 Termegants, 9 Hormagaunts, 4 Warriors and a Tyrant were killed in the first turn alone.  And I was able to bring 7 Gaunts and 7 Gants back, along with 1 Fex in spawning.  Giving that, I don't think the Phase III extra spawning d3 for the Hive Ship's arrival is all that over powered.

No argument here. Extra Attack plus First Strike is a nasty combination for them. I did try to reduce their numbers, but it didn't work out as well as I had hoped.

Playing Orks against Tyranid was interesting. It was nice being able to stand toe-to-toe in CC with them for once.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the game had gone another turn.

Indeed. From the last picture that looks to be around 400 points of bugs vs the Gargant.  I don't think it would have been pretty for me.  Especially with your Supa-Stoma rallied.

Will the boyz be having another go at the swarms this weekend?

Yes orks are quite a match for the old bugs when it comes to crumping each other in close combat :)
