Something a little different for DS and I.  We had time for a second game after the 3K AMTL/'nid battle.  I was originally going to try to field 2K worth of 'nids again but though better of it and tried out my Marines instead.

Dave's Space Marine army list

Turn 1
Initiative: DS

Marines Initial Deployment:


AMTL Initial Deployment:


The Thunderbolts came screaming in on a ground attack on the Whirlwinds, they succeeded in putting a BM on them but that was it.  The Hunter missed them as they flew by.

Tactical 1 marched to the rubble overlooking the Warhounds and Reaver, they bunkered down and best the best of the cover as they could.

Warhounds 1 advanced on Tactical 1 and opened up on them, taking down a Tactical and all 3 Rhinos.

The Assault marines marches to the rubble overlooing the second pair of Warhounds and kept out of sight as much as possible.

The Skitarii doubled and got a line of fire on the Assault marines, taking down 1 despite needing 7s to hit.

The Whirlwinds sustained on the Skitarii but came up with nothing.

The Reaver went on overwatch.

The Devastators doubled to the cover of the buildings and fired on the Skitarii, taking one down.

Warhounds 2 advanced and got a bead on the Assault Marines, taking down 2 more and breaking the remaining unit.

Tactical 2 doubled towards Warhounds 2 and fired on the Skitarii, again coming up with nothing.

End of Turn 1

Tactical 1 rallied with no BMs left.
The Assault marines failed to rally.
The Whirlwinds rallied with no BMs left.

The Skitarii rallied with 2 BM left.

Turn 2
Initiative: Dave

Start of Turn 2 (taken before I teleported the Terminators in):


Tactical 2 engaged the Warhounds with the teleported Terminators.


1 Warhound went down at the other took 1 point of damage and lost its Void Shields.  The marines won out 11-7, breaking the remaining Warhound which retreated towards the Reaver.


The Whirlwinds retain and sustain on the Skitarri again, taking out 2 Chimeras and 1 Skitarii.  They break and withdraw towards the Reaver.

Warhounds 1 advance on the Devastators and take out 2 Rhinos and 2 Devestators, breaking the unit.  The marines hold tight in the buildings.

Tactical 1 sustains on Warhound 1 but comes up with nothing.

The Thunderbolts run a ground attack on Tactical 2 and succeed in taking out a Tactical marine left out in the open.

The Reaver advances on Tactical 1 and takes out the Supreme Commander and another Tactical unit.

End of Turn 2

Tactical 2 rallied with no BMs left.
Tactical 1 rallied with 1 BM left.
The Assault marines rallied with 1 BM left.
The Devastators rallied with no BMs left.
The Terminators rallied with no BMs left.

The broken Warhound failed to rally.
The Skitarii rallied with 2 BM left.

Turn 3
Initiative: Dave

Start of Turn 3:


The Terminators advance towards the Skitarii and take out one of their number not in the cover of the Chimeras, the Skitarii break again and withdraw to behind the Reaver.

The Thunderbolts ground attack Tactical 2 again, taking out a rhino.

The Whirlwinds sustain on Warhounds 1, doing nothing other than putting a BM on them.

The Warhounds, sick of the Whirlwinds double towards them and take out 3 Whirlwinds and the Hunter.

The Devastators sustain on Warhounds 1 put only take out a Void Shield.

The Reaver advances on the Terminators and takes out one.

Tactical 1 doubles to a undefended AMTL objective.

The remaining Assault marine doubles to the center Marine objective.

Tactical 2 advances over the rubble to reinforce the Terminators position.


End of Turn 3

The Terminators rallied with no BMs left.
Tactical 1 rallied with no BMs left.
The Assault marines rallied with no BMs left.
The remaining Whirlwind rallies for the win!


Warhounds 1 rallied with 1 BM left.
The Skitarii rallied with 2 BM left.
The broken Warhound rallies.

In the end the Marines win it 2-0 with 'Defend The Flag' and 'Take And Hold'.

Thoughts:

I find Marines very delicate armour wise, but in terms of shedding the blast markers they are great.  I'd be interested in what anyone has to say about things I should have done differently.

DS had me wrong footed when he won initiative in the first turn, I obviously had to move up but I wanted to do it after he had moved his units so I wouldn't take as many casualties as I did.

He had me worried for awhile, I think in the end though I was able to outmaneuver him with the Warhound and Skitarii being broken.

Also, had the Whirlwind and Assault marine not rallied, I was in for a heck of a pounding.

The marines had a lot of characters for 2k, which would no doubt help with BM removal.  But I don't think I'd use so many.

The SM strategy was good Dave.  You took out the right targets and won by objectives, classic small game tactics for marines against big titan armies.  Objectives spread wide to disperse the titan forces.

DS, I am guessing it might be habit from playing against the Nid drop army that led you to spread out so much in deployment.  In this case you really needed mutual support to fend off the marine assaults (IMO, of course).

Very nice armies chaps, the board looks great.

Yeah, bad habit. It was my first game against Marines. So, i wasn't exactly sure how to play them. Also, as usual, I should have been more aggressive with my Titans. I was overly worried about where the Termies were going to teleport. However, as Dave pointed out, if the game had gone another turn, it's quite likley that he was going to receive a beating.  :D

Also it was really nice to play against an army where things stayed dead after I killed them.  :p

Thanks for the complement on the armies. We can't take all the credit for the boards, though. We play in the gaming room of a hobby store. The tables are theirs, along with a lot of the scenery. However, any buildings you see are mine.

quick question. ?How did the whirlwind rallying win the game? ?I though that rallying units couldn't contest objectives, so could only stop you opponent from getting "They shall not pass".

Oh yeah, that's right. Yeah, let's call it a draw. Even though I probably would have pounded you into submission, given how some of my rolls went, it was far from guaranteed.  :p

One of these days we'll actually play a game correctly.  :D
