Yeah it was a crazy game ;)

I wanted to try the 3 SS as I think it addresses some of the delivery issues faced with other choice however it does put all your eggs in the 1 basket and can be defeated.

Steve and I both agreed that there were many other things he could have done with his unexpected win of the strategy roll in turn two.

Steve didn't fire his overwatch from the Hydras as he was hoping to shoot the disembarking wraith formations for that all important blast marker. Ginger don't worry the overwatch wasn't removed when firing in NW. It's just I don't think Steve was expecting the storm serpents to target the hydras.

As for the combat itself the guard only had 2 commissars, they had blast markers.
The guard started the combat 2 up should they have more than double numbers at the end.
They had roughly 15 attacks on 4 and 1 on 6. Several leman russ couldn't see over the Shadowswords.
The eldar, including the fire support from storm serpents and the wraithseers formation had 5 attacks at 3, 13 attacks at 4, 6 MW attacks at 3, 4 MW attacks at 4. And had no blast markers.

Ginger there was nothing courageous about the move, the maths was in the eldars favour.
Even a marginal win for the eldar would have been massive.

As for the SS getting into position behind terrain that blocked line of sight that was a given as the eldar won the roll of first turn. They were also spread to ensure the manticores would struggle to hit more than one. I think Steve sensibly targeted my artillery over the chance of 2hits on the SS. The death strikes were dealt with by the NW which was fairly reasonable to expect as they were out of the AA bubble, just.

Anyway it was an interesting game and I tried a similar list on the weekend against the salamanders. I will try and get the batrep up for that one soon.

Cheers

Mic

Hi all,

Being the gaurd player on this BR it's interesting to look back over it.

Personally I didn't feel at any point that there were bits of the Iyanden list that were overpowered. I really wasn't a fan of the the Biel-Tan eldar after playing it where a combination of the warlock titan and WE disrupt artillery just felt completely dominating for my IG before the game even began.

In this game I went into it thinking is all fine on paper, I knew what would happen if he got into assault and I knew how to stop that happening (take out the transport/portals). Also given how much stuff is starting off the table the activation bonus in turn 1 is quite significant too.

That said you can see how it went. I don't think the result is a reflection of any unbalance in the list, it was my shity tactics that started the failalanche going and Micks BS criticals on the shadowswords that really rubbed salt into the wound.

The hardest thing to really deal with was the multiple units of wraithgaurd with 4+RA, that is just a huge amount of killing you actually need to do which can be quite difficult so if I was looking at points anywhere it would be there. That said if you manage to kill those transports those are slow moving wraithgaurd that can't do much. Of course even if all they did was camp an objective they are ridiculously hard to kill thanks to the RA combo and the fearless to boot. If anything it is the fearless that pushes them into the hardcore category because there really is no clear tactic which you can pull which will help you kill them effectively.

LR by contrast are super hard to kill thanks to armour but if you just break the Cads they are easy to kill off.

Lol, yeah my deployment was average at best (letting in those damn planes to hit my deathstrikes! and I'm still doing this :{[] about those first 2 moves in turn 2. I got so fixated on the deep strikers that I completely missed the giant death ball in my face.

Playing Mick is a steel learning curve, playing against Eldar is also a steep learning curve... put them together... :nooo

But we'll get back into it soon and you'll hopefully see a better showing... possibly the appearance of stick notes on the table saying DON'T INTERMINGLE!!!

Final result
3-0 Iyanden
Take and Hold
BTS
Defend the flag

Image

Comments and thoughts,
The Iyanden were lucky to get a chance to destroy the Salamanders BTS early however they struggled to get the gates in place turn 2 and 3 with the Engines of Vaul failing to activate twice! It really hurts the Iyanden when the Wraithseer is off table and formations are carrying blast markers.

It was an interesting game and I have to say that Fudds Salamanders are amazingly well painted.

Anyway I have another Batrep coming with an Air heavy list for something different again.

Cheers

Mic

Thanks for the report, and especially for the use of the triple EoV formation.
Please could you both comment on its use in this game.

I believe this is wrong. You can't go into Overwatch when activating the unit because they have to leave or Engage, but if you're already in Overwatch there are no restrictions on firing due to ZoC. From the FAQ:

'Q: Can a formation on overwatch use its overwatch fire when it is in the zone of control of an enemy formation.

A: Yes, as it is not taking an action when shooting while on overwatch. However, it could not choose to remain on overwatch as it would have to charge the enemy or leave its zone of control.'

Well spotted IJW ! 8)
As he says, in turn #3 there is an incorrect assumption
Quote:
Iyanden- The Wraithseer finally hit the table doubling out of the forward Storm Serpent towards the Vindicators and Landraiders fire on them killing a Landraider and vindicator for 3 blast markers. The Vindicators weren’t able to fire their overwatch as they were in the swooping hawk’s zone of control.

As IJW says, the Vindicators *could* have used their OW in the SH ZoC. However the Vindis could not *activate* to go onto OW (or to sustain) in an enemy's ZoC as they would have to use this activation to move somewhere, either to assault the SH or to leave the SH ZoC.

Thanks for clearing that up IJW, we weren't sure how it played at the time and even sought a third opinion. I did make a point of including it in the batrep so that someone might highlight if we played it incorrectly. Thanks ;)

Ginger, I am really liking the 3 EOV formation for Iyanden as the list presently stands. Having 2 storm serpents and a cobra is better than three storm serpents. While the formation is vulnerable to some things I find the biggest problem is that they are activating on a 2 or even a 3 with a blast marker most likely with the Wraithseer off the table so no re-roll. This is a pretty risky all or nothing venture so I guess a lot of consideration has to be given in how to incorporate the Wraithgate into the overall eldar strategy. Steve's (beefcake 4000) feedback on a list with this formation in it was it was 'scary shit' ;D but I am sure he will chime in. I am sure Fudd will similarly have some thoughts to add also.

I will certainly be tinkering with some more builds centred around the 3 EOV.

What are your thoughts?

Well, I was musing on how to destroy it, and cam to the conclusion that a 9DC skimming formation is quite hard and only really vulnerable to shooting. However even then, you can swap the lead EoV around to distribute the firepower and also spread them out to avoid barrages, while the other EoV will soak up shots from large formations of tanks etc. I agree that 3x SS may not be ideal, though even that formation will provide a scary amount of AT fire together with a surprising amount of FF 4+ support . . . .

It does become an automatic target for Deathstrikes, so you need some form of counter which adds to the overall cost of the formation. But all in all, the formation may be a lot tougher than it first appears and so may well provide a very plausible counter-argument to the proposed update to the cost of additional EoV.

Mmmm I think at 650 points is already a massive point sink. At this stage I would not think it as viable at 750 and for me at the moment it feels balanced. However I will certainly give the combo some more table time, I am also musing on a BT list that would centre on Aspects and or fully upgraded Guardians assaulting out of the gates.

The Iyanden Wraithship was to arrive turn one and was committed to a bombardment.

The deployments were as per the pics below. Iyanden had the Wraithguard and Swooping Hawks in the Webway while the WraithBlades were in the Vampire.

It was a good game with the balance tipping throughout the game.
I had designed my list to try and stretch my opponent with corner deployment wherever I could. The idea being that this would hopefully allow the air asests to shine. The inclusion of the Wraithship was primarily to disrupt my opponents deployment and if lucky hit something valuable, in this case I was covering both artillery formations however Steve made sure these formations were benefiting from cover.
The risk for this list was limited delivery systems for the wraith formations. However I had planned to initially deploy the Wraithlords on the table as I really wanted the Wraithseer's reroll from the get go. Despite their lack of speed I think the Wraithlords with the Wraithseer is the most optimum for this strategy.
I am really appreciating the Wraithblade and Vampire combo and feel that this will be an auto include for most of my Iyanden lists.
Also the swooping hawks in the last few games have been offering this list a lot. They are also another method to try and deal with opposition artillery formations if teleported but have done well out of gates.
However I am struggling with rallying or clearing blast markers from Wraithformations and feel it might be worth considering giving the Spiritseers the leader ability.

Anyway I am sure Steve had some thoughts from the game.

Cheers

Mic
