Actually the counter-charge is towards the nearest enemy unit, and is done on a unit by unit basis.

unit as in a single stand?

Correct, each defender stand/unit must counter-charge towards the nearest enemy stand/unit; so that could be in a variety of different directions for a defender that is surrounded.

Yeah that came as a shock.. when a whole lot of terminators countercharged into my Warhound rather than the enemy that was FF them.

Interesting. The implications here suggest that, if surrounded, it is actually feasible for a formation to countercharge AWAY from the assaulting enemy. Depending on how cautious the assaulters were bring, this might bring one or more of their own units out of FF range.

This will certainly affect future assaults and support positions!

Yep, you should be careful to usually have the supporting fire formation further from the enemy than the engager.

There are times when it can be advantageous though, such as when clipping, as it can be used to stop the enemy getting more units into range.

As they can't Firefight the supporting unit... putting a support just to the right of the formation and just 6cm away from the formation you are assaulting can cause the enemy not to be able to move any more troups into the fight.
