I'm planning on going back through the Handbook soon to identify all the blue text, and then re-reading those sections in the Compendium to unlearn what I have learned, as my old Jedi master once told me.

Oh wait--that wasn't reality...sorry, my bad.   :vD

Actually I think you will find there is very little difference between the core rules in the compendium and old Handbook. The main differences were in the army lists where unit costings were changed.

As for the Avatar, he is a fearsome beast made more so when his minions follow him into combat.

The most important differences between the Handbook and the Core Rules + FAQ is the lack of defensive Commander and MW Barrages. Otherwise, they are almost a perfect match.

I guess for me it's a combination of small differences and better clarity that make a noticeable difference - for eg. under flak suppression, we used to play that only units that could fire at aircraft were suppressed ie. 1 firestorm in a fm with 1BM = suppressed flak. The compendium FAQ make it clear that all units with LOS to the aircraft can be suppressed, so in that scenario (which occurred in this game), flak could fire. So I guess that's not so much of a rules difference but a better clearer written version of the same :)
Also, wraithguard with RA = kick ass. Now I don't have to take wraithlords for my assault guardians to gain an RA shield or have to worry about getting into CC to use their nasty attacks, I can just use wraithguard instead  :devil:

I believe 'flak suppression' has always been played this way, though the Compendium may have made it a bit clearer. I might add that this also applies to other weapons and categories, its just that AA fire is more memorable.

WraithGuard have always had 4+RA and have always been good. It sounds as though you have been using the Handbook which included a number of changes to units (including making them 3+). Note Wraithlords do provide cover for infantry which the 'Guards do not.

that's an interesting point Ginger - I hadn't thought of using wraithlords as cover for infantry (and those Guardians need as much help as they can get).

Hmm, currently dreaming up a Ulthwe guardian horde army (even more so than usual).
