How about if they had the option to go towards the nearest enemy unit OR the nearest engaged enemy unit?

That might work.

The issue to my mind is that it gives the player omniscient control over something that the player shouldn't have control over.  Troopers don't leap out of their cover and charge across open ground, under fire, towards farther enemies under normal circumstances.  That's suicidal.

It would need at the very least some sort of Initiative check to ignore the closest unit.

Unfortunately I do agree with the troll in principle- it does not make sense for a unit to advance towards the enemy, then not open fire (even while being fired back upon) because that particular unit isn't in the 'engaged formation'.
Now I don't want elaborate, complex rules to allow shooting against Supporting Formations, that's messy and counter-productive to the chess-like decisions of Epic, but I think the rule above gives the defender more of a sporting chance at a plausible move.

Hi Jeridian
Under the current rules if the unit isn't capable of firing then it cannot be fired upon.
If it is more than 15cm from attacker (so cannot us it's FF against them) then it cannot be targeted during the assault even by a support formation that could be 1cm away it,although it could be destroyed in the hack downs.

How about this then?

"Defender's Counter-Charge move's must be made towards the nearest unit in the engaged formation, or the nearest non-engaged unit if it is both the closest, and the Counter-Charging unit can get into base contact."

I agree, there can be some silly scenarios in my earlier proposed rule- not being able to draw Supporting formations into the assault, but I argue that 60-80% of the units in the game could never do this anyway (Counter-charge move of 5cm), whilst the opponent is an idiot for letting the other 40-20% snag a Supporting formation he didn't want engaging.
In short both the official and suggested rules have 'dodgy' abstract scenarios- but I think the official version is more of a 'wtf' that screws the defender, whilst the suggested rule is a 'hmm' as close to getting your defensive FF as you can get.

Basically the official version can be used by the attacker to dodgy effect, the suggested version not so much.

If you want to try for this change I would recommend that the counter charge does not have to get into BtB contact, I currently play it that you can enter the zone of control as a counter charge move, but if you can't reach BtB then it doesn't matter, you are hoping for a second round of combat.

This thread seems to be going in ever decreasing circles, moving under its own momentum and not really gaining much ground. There are several issues contained here, and I suggest that they are split into individual threads and posted at the relevant boards.

Thanks.
