OK, time to swallow some pride here and ask a question to the collection wisdom:

You may have seen in my blog thread (http://www.tacticalwargames.net/forums/ ... =1155;r=1;) that my 8 yr old son is developing some tactical skills, which of course I wish to develop in order to properly train my own opponent.  Indeed it is nice to have someone at home wanting to play a game every night!

Now the next obvious step from Spoace Hulk is 40k and with the new rules released and the starter set coming out, this would seem a natural way forward.  I have heard that the new 5th Ed rules are more tactical in nature too which sounds good.  While he isnt at a level to understand the full system yet, it gives good scope for greater expansion later.  Of course I alreday have a bunch of background material too  Downpoints are the cost of armies and the risk of him turing inot a GW fanboy!  Plus the painting aspects which he int up to (yet)

AT-43 also offers an alternatoive, and the pre-painted minis are also a bonus.  However, its not as widespread and I'm not too sure about the system.

Is anyone out there able to provide soem comparisons between the two systems?  Or perhaps provide another alternative?  Thanks guys!

AT-43 would be great if it had some decent scenarios. It doesn't and it is left to fans to create them. If you don't/can't then the game really suffers as the official scenarios are bad.

Why not crossfire? Very simple concepts but very tactical to play out?

Very helpful

Why not crossfire?

Let the kid at least learn a game he has a hope of finding an opponent for. :-)

Just my opinion ...  :;):  Glad I could help ! :D  But to be honest, IMO, every version was full of purile rules to attract the "kids" who like bright shiney things. I think I've said this before, regardless if it is Sci-fi ... I prefer a modicum of "reality" of some sort. And rules that can reflect some sort of even low level tactics and strategy.   The models(and fluff) have a tendency to be a bit over the top(ie. silly!). And the rules were not really a "wargame" per se ... but a game that appealed to kids. So I'm sure Tas's son will be attracted to it, he's 10 or 11 ... He should like it, he's a child(albeit "gifted ! :D )! And adults that like uneedly convoluted role-play games. That morphed from a skirmish game into an Epic scale "we have to play on the backyard lawn" game. With models that cost much more then "toys" should ... Well other then that, off the top of my head, I think it's a great game for 14 and below ...  Again, just my opinion ... :D  ADWWFY ... 8v)

Thanks for the opinion Grandpa.

:)

Not popular in the colonies then? Most clubs I know in the UK have a few hardcore fans, one club up in Durham plays virtually nothing but.

Still I admit I was motivated by the attempt to promote tactical thought!

Its a good point though. Tas, what do you reckon are the easist games in the locality to get opponents for? There is pretty much a beginners level game for every genre. No use going 40k say if everyone currently nuts on something else. Though 40k probably has the biggest web presence, but is that really a factor when you are playing with your old man?

Never seen anyone play it.

One assumes that at some point he will be playing other people than his old man and so why not teach him to play a popular game? Let him make his own decisions after that if he wants but at least 40K will be easy enough for him to pick up and easy for him to go out on his own and play later on

Let's have some blasphemy here...  :ghost:

How about the (heroclick) Mechwarrior?

The original was far to much exact damage and thus slow to play.
But is this new from (hated?) WizKids playable enough?
(Yes, I admit, I like the hero gaming! 8v) )

I vote for teaching him 40k ... it's a kid's wargame after all, easy to learn and simple to play.

I was also going to suggest some alternatives...

Star Mogul - A campaign system where all dice rolls are based on 2D6 + modifier. Needs relatively few minis and seems a good system.

Then there are Infinity and Rezolution. Both are quite visual but a little more complex (around 40K complexity).

I have also downloaded AT43 trial rules from the Rackham site. Take a look and see what you think.

Star Mogul is a fun game. Great rules and it not only needs few minis but it does have a nice kitbash element to it as well.

I'd avoid Infinity as a first game. Rezolution might be fun but the minis are hit and miss.
