I have noticed whenever this is proposed it gets a chorus of no's based on 40k stats. Now I am 12 years behind 40k wise so can someone explain to me what this is all about? What vehicles in 40k benifit from TRA - does TRA even exist in 40k?

Not really. There exist Siege Armour. Thats available for Vindicators, Leman Russ Demolishers and Thunderers automatically but other IG, SM and CSM tanks can be equipped with this armour for a (relatively high) points cost too.
Rules are in Codex: Cityfight. Essentially it says that hits from atop are counted against the vehicles rear armour. But against vehicles with SiegeArmour you count the side armour instead.

In epic it seems only units which rear and/or side armour is equaly protected against hits in Wh40k (eg LandRaiders which have all around the same armourvalue of 14 wich is the maximum value in the game and Terminators which have the best infantry armour in the game) have ThickRearArmour.

Vehicles in 40K have an armour value for front, sides and rear and range from 10 to 14. Most vehicles have a rear armour of 10 but some have higher. Monoliths and Land Raiders are both 14 all round.

So say a rhino doesn't have the same armour all the way round?

Apart from the very LOW armour value the Rhino has 11/11/10.
A Sentinel has 10/10/10 but this is nothing but slighty better tinfoil.

LandRaider has 14/14/14
Monolith has 14/14/14
Vindicator has 13/11/10
Lemans Russ Demolisher has 14/13/11

You roll a W6 plus the Strength of the weapon (Bolter = 4, Lascannon = 9) if you exeed the armour value you have a good chance to destroy the tank.
