Well, one of my EPICmates wanted to "try something different", so he decided to field Tyranids using my Phase III "Attack" list and my Imperial Guard would be on the recieving end of their fury.

Lots of fun was had!

You have to buy enough to carry everything in the dropping swarm... it's not actually that many pods landing and doing attacks!  *laugh*

Battlefield:

4x6
Tyranids chose corner deployment.

Deployment:

Hive Ship, containing all Spore Podded swarms set for first turn.

Lunar Class Cruiser set for second turn.

Tyranids held Lictors in reserve.

Imperial Guard garrisoned the Infantry Company, Rough Rider 1, Storm Troopers, and Sentinels with the Infantry Company and Storm Troopers on overwatch.

Remaining deployment as shown below:

Note: The Guard formations were deployed in such a way that their Zones of Control covered the entire Guard deployment zone, extending far into their portion of the battlefield.  Additionally, no formations were set up intermingled. (Man, those scouts units covered a lot of territory!

Strategy Roll: Tyranids

The Hive Ship appears overhead.  The Orbital Barrage lands smack-dab in the middle of the X-shaped ruin, slagging 5 Guardsmen and an Ogryn unit.  And then the Spore Pods begin to fall?

The Harassment Swarm lands on Tyranid Objective 1, the leader beast of the attack securing itself behind the forest.

Assault Group 1 lands at the T-junction road amid all the ruined buildings.

Assault Group 2 lands right in the X-shaped ruin, placing another Blast marker on the Infantry Company.

Assault Group 3 attempts to land right in the middle of the heart of the Imperial forces, but is forced far to the forward edge of the Imperial deployment and splashes against the Infantry Company, killing 1 Guardsman, and the Sentinels, placing a Blast marker.

The Attack Group lands right in the ruined T-shaped building and lumbers into position.

Assault Swarm 1 hesitates, but the Harridan impels them to engage the Infantry Company which counter-charges into Assault Swarm 3.

It's a brutal fight that lasts two rounds; the forest cover helps the Guard, but not enough as they lose 1 Sniper, 1 Hydra, and 3 Guardsmen and they are pushed back despite killing 3 Raveners and 2 Termagants.  The Imperial flee into the swamp while the Tyranids consolidate their position.

Rough Rider 1 sounds the charge to engage Assault Swarm 3? but they lose 2 units to broken limbs before they get there!  The survivors kill 2 Hormagaunts and 2 Termagants, but 3 more Rough Riders are killed? but they still manage to win by "1", the Commissar still breaking, the last Imperial survivor of the charge.  The Tyranids just reposition themselves?

The advance, holding position, but popping up to catch Assault Swarm 1 in a crossfire with the Sentinels and 2 Tyranid Warriors are mowed down.

The Attack Swarm surges out of cover to engage the Vultures and their sparse firefight ability still manages to wipe out all four VTOLs with no Tyranid casualties!

Assault Swarm 2 sustains fire on the Reg HQ, killing 1 Guardsman.

Rough Rider 2 engages Assault Swarm 3, loses 1 unit of Riders to terrain and another to enemy action? the three Tyranid Warriors survive, but are sent packing, heading towards the Harridan and the Guardsmen are victorious!

After being harassed a lot, the Warriors of Assault Swarm 3 engage the intermingled Sentinels and broken Infantry Co? miraculously for the Guardsmen they suffer no loses and manage to drop a Tyranid Warrior!  The two survivors seek the comfort of their mom and hide behind cover? some might even say cowering!

The Regimental HQ sustains fire on Assault Swarm 1, wiping it out completely.

The Harassment Group tries to advance, but the death of so many Synapse creatures has befuddled it and it only moves forward.

The Thunderbolts zip in to strafe Assault Swarm 3, but it is ineffective.  On their departure, the Harridan sacrifices a Gargoyle to place a Blast marker on the aircraft.

The Storm Troopers mount up and double on Assault Swarm 3 and their Plasma Guns wipe out the 2 remaining Tyranid Warriors.

The Mech Company settles in and goes on overwatch?

End of Turn

The Attack Group uses 2 Mycetic Spores to spawn 8 Hormagants!

The Harassment Group uses 2 Spores to reclaim 5 Gargoyles!

Nothing else spawns.

All Imperial formations successfully rally.

Turn 2

Both Lictor Swarms appear, one in the ruins near the Mech Co, and the other in the ruins at the end of the long edge of the Imperial deployment zone.  Both Swarms have the Mech Co in their zones of control?

Strategy Roll: Imperial Guard

The Lunar Cruiser arrives? the Orbital Bombardment lands directly on the poor, single survivor of Rough Rider 1? and the light of the Emperor takes him home? *KABOOM*  The Pin-Point Attack targets the Harridan? and misses with a "1"!  *SIGH*

Despite the yelled orders of the Supreme Commander the Reg HQ just can't manage to sustain fire on Lictor Swarm 1 and they just fire normally, killing to of the Spooks.

The Harassment Swarm engages the intermingled Sentinels and Infantry Company.  The Harridans suffers 1DC damage and loses 3 Gargoyles while 2 Sentinels are wrecked and only the Commissar and his Ogryn unit survive for the Infantry, allowing a handy win for the Tyranids.

Rough Rider 2, with the support of the Mech Company, engages Lictor Swarm 2 in a 6cm firefight.  They lose another member to treacherous terrain but manage to bag 3 Lictors for no Imperial losses.

Very small Assault Swarm 1 engages the broken Sentinels, wiping them out, and settling in to a nice nest in the ruins.

The Thunderbolts roar in to wipe out Lictor Swarm 1.

The Attack Swarm charges forward to engage the Regimental HQ, the lose 1 Carnifex to a pothole, but the Hormagaunts leap into action!  The battle lasts two rounds: 7 Hormagaunts and 1 Carnifex are dropped, but the Imperials lose, suffering the lose of a Hydra, 4 Chimera, and 7 Guardsmen, the survivors break and flee.

The lone Lictor of Swam 2 engages Rough Rider 2? neither side scores any hits, but the Imperials win by "1", startling the Lictor to death in shame.

The Storm Troopers fail to sustain fire on the Harassment Group but still fire 4 Rocket Pods it, doing 1DC to the Harridan and killing 1 Gargoyle.

Though not all of them can see the target, the Mech Company sustains fire on the Attack Swarm? and kills a singe Hormagaunt!

End of Turn:

The Harridan regenerates 1DC and spawns 2 Hormagaunts?  *EVERYONE* else fails their Rally/Spawn checks.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids (On a tie)

The Harassment Swarm engages the harassing Storm Troopers? and, incredibly, the Toy Soldiers only lose 2 Storm Troopers and a Valkyrie and wipe out the entire Swarm!

The Thunderbolts make another ground attack, against Assault Swarm 1 and they manage to kill the last remaining Tyranid Warrior.

The Attack Swarm doubles towards the Mech Infantry, slightly too far away to clip it, and just places a Blast marker.

The Mech Infantry obliges the Attack Swarm and advances closer, taking out 2 Carnifex, leaving the Hive Tyrant with one?

End of Turn:

The Hive Tyrant fails to spawn?

The Reg HQ and the Infantry Co both fail to rally.

The Ravener of Assault Swarm 1 goes to ground.

Strategy Roll: Tyranids

Howling with near impotent rage, the Hive Tyrant leads the Attack Swarm against the Mech Company? maybe the rage isn't so impotent as a Leman Russ, a Chimera, and 2 Guardsmen are killed!  Unfortunately, the counter-attack wipes out both Tyranid creatures.

The Mech Company doubles, spreading out to secure all three Imperial side objectives.

The Storm Troopers double to claim the Tyranid Blitz and Obj 2?

End of Turn:

All Imperial formations rally.

Imperial 5 (all) vs Tyranids 0 (none)

Yeah, lately the Tyranids have been getting *swatted* around here... I guess it comes from fielding them so often that people have developed very effective tactics against them.

Bugs are scary for imperials, to be honest I looked at the imperial list and tought "No tank companies? No heavy tanks? No titans? Oh dear". Really tought it would be a massacre. Hats off to the imperial commander. Easy forget what a good old "Grunt" can do when you have waves of them!!
