Combined assault and BMs

Hey guys just after a bit of advice. In a recent game with my Kreig vs. Tau my opponent had a 12 stand fire warrior formation plus pathfinders and ethereal sat in ruins guarding his blitz on overwatch. Start of turn 3 I managed to combined assault them with 2 infantry companies and a death rider company.

Are the three formations counted as one huge formation for BMs and overwatch? Can he target different units? In the event we counted them all as one so the death riders took the worst of the fire and casualties seeing as they were closest (or in b2b). They ended up taking about 8 BMs on the few surviving DRs so would've broken. The infantry companies didn't suffer too much on the way in but they took casualties too (he got more hits than there were DRs so the overspill hit some of the saveless guardsmen).

Then the DRs broke after combat res.

Was that right?

So they're one formation, and you would assign the hits to the closest of your units (the Death Riders). He would have had to put BMs on you to equal the number of units left in all three formations in order to break all three at once. Up until that point, nothing would break. After they loose the "count as one formation" though at the end of the assault, they would break.

So sounds correct to me.

Agreed Dave. One last point, OW would place a BM for shooting on the 'single' formation. Where there are several actual formations, it is placed on the formation nearest the shooters.

And you do need to be careful when placing the BMs inflicted by shooting and the assault, because although they count as a single formation from the point that they move up to the end of the assault, when they separate, each formation may well have different numbers of BMs which could result in some of the winning formations breaking as well.

Before the target assaults, so they are still 3 different formations and they have to choose only one???

And what about hackdown hits? I wonder if they are still one formation at that point... Say they lose by 3, does the combined formation take 3 hits, or do they take 3 hits EACH???

No, the formations become a 'single' formation from the point that the Commander succeeds in activating them, up to the end of the assault (which includes the assault resolution and hackdown hits).

Hackdown hits are processed as usual, starting with those units nearest the enemy, which may well result in an uneven distribution across the participating formations.
