I am working on some new units for my Chaos Marine force and have reached a bit of a dilemma.
I plan to use these units to summon Daemons so a Champion and a Banner Upgrade is pretty mandatory for them.
In constructing the actual stands it is more aesthetically pleasing to have the Champ and Banner on the same stand as the Lord upgrade to represent a Command Squad or personal retinue.
However, this make it extremely easy to have all your costly upgrades destroyed by a lucky shot from your opponent and so from a gameplay standpoint it seems better to have the Champion and Banner Bearer on different stands than the Lord.
So which is it to be, Form or Function?

You could model them all on one stand and then use temporary banners on 'normal' stands to spread out the abilities in-game.

someone on these boards made stands with removable figures. Sadly I don't know who it was or how he did it.

The way it was done you could remove individual miniatures from the base, to be flexible with character upgrades and such.

I saw another army that modeled all stands as "plain" troops and then has a tiny stand they'd stick alongside that was the character. A rather elegant, if fiddly, arrangement.

I believe the solution used was to drill through the hole in the base and use a piece of tin and an earth magnet to hold the figure in place. However I am not sure which went where - I think the magnet went in the base and the small piece of tin went on the base of the figure.

I'd split them. Let's you have the lord in the center of his stand, with the banner behind him.
