Greetings everyone...

I'm new to the forums, but have already been utilizing the web site quite a bit. I'm an old 40K player, started back in the Rogue Trader days. Played some Space Marine way back...and one game of epic in the last 10 years.

Anyway, I just came into a large collection of Epic 40K miniatures. So, getting a few buddies together who are interested, and would like us to start playing Epic. I have the minis, just need to start up with designing some forces to showcase the different features of the game.

My goal is to design and build (and eventually paint, which is not my strong suit) 5+ Epic armies of varying size (yes, the lot of minis I got has Space Marines, IG, Orks, Eldar, Chaos, Squats and Tyranids). Then get my buddies together (we all play various games today, 40K, X-WIng, Fantasy) and learn the game.

So, long winded intro to question...

Would creating say, 2K and 4K lists for each army be viable and a good idea?

Here is an example of a 4K Eldar List I threw together. Now, please realize this was put together solely on "what I thought sounded neat, and which miniatures I like".

Spirit Warrior Host 1 Spirit Seer Character
6 Wraithguard Units
3 Wraithlords

Spirit Warrior Troupe 6 Wraithlords

War Walker Troupe 6 WarWalkers

Spirit Warrior Host 1 Spirit Seer Character
6 Wraithguard Units
6 Wave Serpents

Engine of Vault Troupe 2 Scorpion

Aspect Warrior Troupe 4 Fire Dragons 4 Falcons

Phantom Titan 1 Phantom Titan

Revenant Titan 2 Revenant Titans

Also, any suggestions on getting into Epic would be really welcome!

Appreciate the site, and hope to be contributing more to it in the future.

Welcome! Sounds like you came into quite the collection!!! That's great. You're really going to have fun with this game. I just got into it a little less than a year ago, and I am hooked. It started out with just me and one other friend playing locally, and now we've got a solid group of about ten guys. If you build it, they will come.

I'm sure other guys here can give you more in-depth advice about lists and stuff in regards to Eldar (I won't touch the dirty Xenos!) But generally speaking, it seems 3k is the sweet spot. 2k is a pretty small game and your options will be limited. 5k is a nice size, as well, but 4k games are fun as well.

Welcome snd congrats for picking up the best strategic wargame ever made! :-)

I think 3-4 2K armies are good if you want to get some variation and feelfor the game. You can get this with only 2 2K armies also.

My suggestion is to get IG (exodus wars have great proxies), Orks (troublemaker games have great proxies) and the Eldar that you have for three different styles of play!

Just to reiterate that 3k is the standard game size.

Welcome to the boards, sound like you have given yourself a task and a half to complete. I would also recommend that you look at minimum army sizes of 2750-4000 pts as this range is primarily where the lists are balanced.

Can I just check which lists you will be working from as there are two main types discussed here NetEA & Epic-UK. Don't want to give you incorrect advice.

Main thing from your first test list is that most armies have a restriction on Titans & aircraft upto 1/3 of the points value of the army. So running a Phantom & pair of Reavers would only be possible in a list of 4200pts or above. However if you are learning with your mates and the other side has similar forces then go with it.

Welcome to the fold Andozane :-).

If you're based in the UK you'll find that we've got a very healthy and active tournament scene both from independent organisers and the larger 'EpicUK' organisation who have a handy website with lots of info.

See you around,
Ryan

welcome to the forum and epic in general :)

if you're learning the game, I can recommend the training scenarios in the rulebook which will introduce you to the mechanics of the game and help illustrate the different rules concepts

I'd also recommend starting off painting up your orks and IG forces to learn the game with, marines are a little more fiddly, and eldar fiddlier still (with a tonne of additional special rules to boot) by all means try them out, but if you're learning the game, probably best to leave a full sized game with eldar until you've got the hang of engagements and the air rules!

it's probably best to start small for your first few games, 2k is a decent size, it's also probably best to avoid using aircraft at first, and try not to max-out on the war engines as they add a bit of complexity and fiddliness

As Ryan said, if you're UK-based, we'd love to see you guys at an event sometime, they're super friendly and beginners are always welcome :)

Good to have you on board!

I'd also agree that 2k is a great starting point. It gives you enough points to try things out and you should get through a game in a decent time. Like any smaller points values it does lean a bit more towards paper, scissors, stone end of gaming but E:A is pretty good at producing an exciting game even if you start losing a few formations - the tournament rules/objective system really helps with that.

I've only just moved up to 3k in my last 5 or so games and I got a lot of enjoyment out of 2k whilst I was getting to grips with the rules.

I think drawing up lists for each army is a good idea, if nothing else it gives a good painting target. My suggestion would be to start with IG and either Orks or Marines. Both of the latter armies have special rules without being too complicated, but orks are more straightforward to use (just double and engage and you won't go far wrong!).

In terms of lists, I wouldn't worry about it too much. As time goes by your selection criteria will change (e.g. you may find you prefer to have cheaper formations so you can have more of them), but better to get a feel for how the units behave yourself and enjoy using them rather than go by what some people on the internet say IMO. Likewise don't let the "EpicUK vs NetEA vs GW rulebook" list differences that have been mentioned concern you for now, get some games in and we can explain all that later.

Play one of the basic training scenarios first, and work upwards to more complex and bigger games. One you've got the basic rules down, war engines are relatively simple to add. I would avoid flyers for a while as they work very differently and can unbalance the game if one of the players isn't expecting them.

Thanks everyone!
Sadly, not UK Based...pretty far from it, Portland, OR USA.
We have a great 40K and massive gaming community here though, and a lot of "old guard" types like myself who love nostalgia and good games.

Thanks...Orks and IG as starter forces...heard that twice, so I'm gonna run with it. Ironic, in front of me is a ton of Orks...

So, I take it there are no rules any more for all the different specific vehicles, now do people just run them as "Gun Wagons"? I have lots of the plastic gun wagons too I believe, plus the plastic battlewagons.

Thanks again, I will work on the two starter forces of IG and Orks.

Well check that out, we're almost neighbors. I'm spending most of my time again up here in seattle and have a good crew from Microsoft that plays. You make it up here be sure to swing through the laboratory and catch some slivovitz and a game on me.

Now that being said, there's a nice pile of vehicles there to play with. I find painting them far more gratifying than infantry myself and they tend to take less time to finish in my experience. You might want to check out the speed freaks list to see if it is to your liking.

One of the benefits of Orks is that everything is unique, custom, and ramshackle so it's a kitbasher/scratch builder paradise and any mistakes made are just part of their character!

I use the plastic vehicles converted up a bit for more variety as gun wagons. The old metal vehicles I use to represent gun wagons armed with soopa guns and supa-zap guns (big weapons that can be added to gun-wagons).

cheers
