I played vs. a lot of Eldar in 2nd Edition and E40K, but haven't prevously fought them in Epic Armageddon. I've been re-reading Swordwind (and paying a bit more attention) and I don't think holofields are working the way I thought they worked. Maybe my memories of 2nd edition were making them more effective than they should be, or maybe I'm misreading Swordwind.

Someone confirm for me: Swordwind seems to say that Eldar equipment with a Holofield get a 3+ holofield save, instead of an armor save. If they fail this save and they have reinforced armor and they were not struck with a Lance, Macro, or Titan Killer weapon, then they get to roll again using their armor value. If they were struck by one of those weapons and and fail their Holofield save, then they take the damage.

In other words, the Holofield save is in place of the first armor save roll. It is not an additional roll on top of an armor save roll (or two; if it has reinforced armore.)

Am I reading this right? That's not what I was expecting, but that seems to be what the text states.

Thanks!

-Allen

You're right (except the part about macro; macro doesn't prevent reinforced armour rolls, just normal ones which is over ridden by the holofield rule).

Yup, the Holofield replaces the first armour save.
Also, Holofields work differently from titan shields. A save from the holofield means that the shot has missed entirely, so you only resolve TK damage after determining that the TK shot has hit (a shield absorbs some or all of the damage).

So once the Holofield is hit, is that it gone? Or does it get reused everytime?

He's right about not getting a armour re-roll if hit by a MW actually. To quote the relevent section of the holofield rules: "If a vehicle with a Holofield also has Reinforced Armour, then it is allowed to re-roll its saving throw unless hit by Lance, Macro-weapon or Titan Killer attacks, but the re-roll must be made using the units armour save rather than the Holofield save."

They get the holofield save everytime.

However, the first time they take a critical hit the holofield breaks for the rest of the game (subsequent criticals cause an extra point of damage instead).

A holofield save is also reduced by -1 by crossfire as usual and this is a good tactic against them.

Hmm, due to take on my first Eldar opponent shortly so this is good to know. I may have to field some SM with a Titan or two...... The lack of TK weapons for SM's is a pain!

terminators are your best bet..... although against a warlock you'll probably lose them all in the process.... might be worth taking two formations and teleporting in, then doing a combined engage....

I am a big fan of Termies, and assault marines. Last game I played (also against SM's) my opponent didnt field either as he didnt see the point. I moved the Assault around in cover to lay an ambush, then teleported the temies in at the same time. Carnage :)

teleporting terminators, assault marines in thawks... BOOM BOOM BOOM, what's not to love? I can't even write a marine list without putting terminators in, they just appear by magic even if I go out of my way to avoid putting them in.
