So what's your favorite character to add to bullet magnets terminators? Librarians or Chaplains or a Captain?

Chaplain. Terminators are an assault formation: Chaplains are the best assault character with their inspiring.

That is the choice many would take.

I would invite the thought that they are already good in combat and that a Chaplain choice is redundant. In this respect, the leadership potential to charge with multiple formations even after a retain is of greater use tactically.

Just putting it out there..

Frogbear makes a good point. I guess it all depends how you feel about it Jimmy.... Any SM character is a benefit, regardless. All types are useful. A librarian for example is an excellent way to generate a MW FF attack... Basically pick one to tailor to the task you set them in a game. Trial each one to see which you prefer. ;)

I like a Chaplain in one, and if I take a second formation, a Librarian.

That way the Librarian can lend support when the Chaplain formation charges.

For the price you pay, why would you give up the 4x MW attacks so a Chaplain can use his 1x MW attack?

You mean Librarian?

- Because I'd immediately retain with the Librarian's formation to attack something else.

Ah! I see. Very good.

Metagame is everything. That tactic never occured to me with Termies.

Your choice of character is down to how you are planning to use the formation.

As a one off assault force then take a Chaplain.
As part of a Combined assault force to go after bigger targets (Warlord/Reaver/Tank Co etc.) then a Captain is needed.
My favourite over the years for tournaments has been a Librarian.
For me it's the best multi purpose character. In CC you still get the extra MW attack (I find it's bad attack dice rolls or great armour saves by my opponent that lose the assault rather than not having an inspiring character), used well you will also get the formation to support another assault too with the extra MW FF attack.

This.

Do you want to take that nearly guaranteed +1 Inspiring when the Terminators deepstrike in, or do you think you can maneuver them sufficiently to make it up with extra MWFF attacks over the course of a game? With a fast formation like Bikes or Speeders, I like my chances at using that MWFF support fire several times per game and prefer Librarians. For a slower formation like Termies, it's a toss-up.

Of course you also need to take into account that a formation of 4 units could generally need a bit of a boost in an engagement so the +1 inspiring is a big draw card.

Like I said, trial them all and see what you prefer - it's the best way to find out. ;)
